JCrew toothpick jean in velvet

Does anyone own these, or has anyone seen them in store? I am quite enamored of the thought of navy velvet jeans. Could you wear them with a denim shirt? A black sweater? A chunky cream sweater (if one is ever found)? Are they worth investigating, or are they going to be too corduroy-esque? Would love to hear your thoughts.

I've got another pair of JCrew velvet jeans (mine are winter white bootcuts) and I love them. Navy would be glorious. Velvet is not corduroy-esque at all. I think Angie even makes an exception to her no-corduroy rule for corduroy that is such a fine wale that it reads a velvet.

Have you worn the toothpick jeans before? I've tried them, but they were a no go, too looooow and too fitted over my calves. However, I just bought a pair of their matchstick jeans and am completely and utterly enamored of them.

ETA: Oh god. They have them in velvet in navy in the matchstick. I'm done for. The only things saving me are that it would be terrible of me to vulture your totally awesome jean find and they are too expensive for me. If these go on sale, though, I'm going to lose all moral guidance. Vultures have none, you know.

No, I haven't tried either of these, but geesh - the idea of navy velvet skinnies for fall/winter is sounding pretty good to me, especially with the combinations you suggested!

Glad you asked and posted - I wouldn't have known about these otherwise. Will you let us know if you decide to try either the JCrew or GAP versions?

Oooh, slouchy skinny? That sounds fab, Una. Are you still going to implement your plan? I would think velvet would be great in Alaska - much warmer than denim.

I have had more success with GAP Real Skinnies than JCrew Matchsticks. Angie and Anna make me think the blush could be worth trying - maybe I will order GAP in navy and matchstick in blush and do the side-by-side comparison.

I would like to, but I can't figure out the difference between matchstick and toothpick... Does anyone know?!

Matchsticks are slim and straight, while toothpicks are super skinny. So if you wanted slouchy, you would size up on matchsticks, right, because those toothpicks are going to be jegging-like.

Why yes, Rae, velvet and t-shirts are super fab. I love the high-low contrast. I was concocting outfit ideas in my mind and thought denim shirts and Frye boots would work super well for making velvet jeans rugged. And then you could dress them up with a silky blouse, pearls and heels.

I had a pair of burgundy velvet bootcuts many years ago that I loved. Velvet matchsticks sound even better. Thanks for letting us be vultures:)

i ordered the navy matchstick when it was 30% off of sale price. the color is gorgeous, but i'm going to have to return them. i have a hard time w/skinny jeans b/c my calves + thighs are big for my size (5'1"), and these jeans were clinging to me in all the wrong places, showing every lump + bump. i could try going up a size, but then i'd have to pay a tailor to take in the waist. i think i'll have to stick w/fine wale cords when i'm craving the luxe velvet look.

I ordered both toothpick and matchstick in a size up. Matchstick was not skinny at all on me - much too wide leg. Toothpick I almost kept but they were a little off to be skinny slouchy - again too big in the ankle and calf. The color is beautiful and they would look good fitted too. Note that Gap also has blue velvet skinnies which I tried in a slightly brighter navy. They weren't as soft but much cheaper! In the end I decided not to keep any and got coated skinnies instead.

The only caveat I would make about velvet is to try the finger test. Take the hem or someplace else that won't show and rub it hard between two fingers, then let go. If it dents or mattifies, you will wind up with a slick and shiny behind and knees, and well as terrible wrinkle marks. This makes them pretty much a 3-wear wonder before they look awful. Just FYI!
