winter closet sweep, keepers or not?

Hi every one,
I am doing a major closet sweep and wanted some opinions on these coats.
The first is a fake fur, very warm, used it around the holidays with dressier outfits. Is it cheesy or ok?

The next is a Steve Madden bomber. It is also warm. I live around Boston and commute quite a bit on foot. I need really warm coats or I have to wear huge wool sweaters. I get cold really easily and it is always a challenge to stay warm. I also teach at a grubby art school in Boston, I never like to wear anything that gets dirty easily. I don't have a lifestyle for cream coats but I also want to look stylish and not like a teenager. Remember I am 50? Thoughts?

I personally don't like all fake fur coats for me but I can appreciate it if someone else pulls it off with confidence. If it is a good quality one and you like to use that with dressier outfits, keep.

I don't think bombers are just for teens! plus you have a great, great figure (that lots of younger girls would envy). You look good in it and it is warm, so I say keep too.

Boy, I didn't help you clean your closet did I?

You look incredible. I agree to keep both. I love them both on you and they are good for different occasions. I love the idea of the furry one during the holidays. The bomber is a perfect bomber. I've seen some that I don't care for but this one is really great.
Now what brand jeans are those? You're a hot art teacher!

Love the bomber, keep! You rock that style.
I'm not a fan of the fake fur one, I personally do find it a little cheesy and actually somewhat "younger" looking than the bomber even though this might be counter-intuitive. I think the bomber exudes more confidence in yourself and your style.

I like the bomber jacket. I'm ambivalent about the fake fur -- I think that if you like it and feel confident in it, it will work for fun dress-up at the holidays. But if you feel uncomfortable or cheesy then get rid of it.

I like the first one very much but to me the second looks a little youngish but hey you have the body and style to pull both looks off! You look great!

Maybe I am biased because I am your age (almost) and just gave my brown bomber style coat (like your 2nd photo) to my 16 year old daughter. Mine was a cheapy though from ON and did not feel good on. Mine was a little too small I think. If it were comfortable, I might have kept it. Mine kept riding up and felt restricting.

But again, you look great in yours.

Oh I just read your post again and see that it is a Steve Madden. So yours is high quality----so my vote is to keep it.

the first one is a keep for sure in my opinion.

Thank you so much everyone, I will keep the bomber. It seems like the fake fur gets mixed reviews. My big problem is finding something warm for dressy occasions. Trenches never are warm enough for me, puffers are too casual. I have yet to find a really unique coat that fits the bill. I used to wear vintage Jackie O style coats but as a rectangle they looked a little dumpy and boxy. Angie, if you are around, what do you think?

I hate to admit this but I have yet to buy premium jeans, those are Limited Too size 14 girl's jeans. They are skinnies and the perfect ppl. I found them at a thrift store. I was surprised they fit and thought they would work until I can invest in a premium pair. I am so glad you like them. Thanks for the encouragement.

I vote to keep both coats, but the fake fur looks casual to me...something to wear with denim or twills. It is a problem to find a coat that's warm for dressy occasions, isn't it? I had an ankle length lined light weight smooth black wool trench with a belt that I used, but it no longer fits and is probably too long (although the length made it warmer). I'm considering trying to find a shiny trench maybe in silver or cream with a zip out lining, but don't know if it exists.
Maybe a wool coat with princess lines would work and not be boxy.

My very stylish friend had a hot pink wool coat on last year at a holiday party and it looked so festive and fun and classy. She got it at VS.

I don't know if I could be that brave but she looked incredible in it for a holiday party.

First, you look so great in those pants. I like the fit of both jackets. Glad you're keeping the bomber. As for the fake fur, I will probably only contribute to the ambivalence. I couldn't wear real fur but I like the look. So I'm always on the lookout for something fake that would substitute. The pieces I find are never quite right (i.e., just look too synthetic) thus I never get anything. The picture is a little blurry so I can't really make an assessment of how the fur looks. So I just offer my experience for consideration. Now that I think about it, I personally think I should just give up on the look. Can't have your cake and eat it too in this case.

This is the coat close up, it is not real looking but I think supposed to appear as a fun fur that is not trying to imitate the real thing. Maybe this would help other see it too.

I like them both - they both fit well and seem appropriate for their use. It's hard to find a dressy coat that is warm - I see alot of people wear satin trenches with the dressier clothes but they're not exactly warm. A black 3/4 length wool or cashmere would also do the job but seems kind of blah - I think you're fake fur gives the dressy coat look a little edge.

Hmmmm....I think the fake fur coat is kind of fun. It's supposed to be somewhat cheesy. If you were going to elegant, then it wouldn't work. But keep it casual and funky and I think it's a keeper.

I like both coats and would keep them. They fit you great. I also have a fake fur coat ( will post it at some point) and while I don't wear it too often, I do like to put it on occasionally when I'm craving something different.

Nicole, that is a great idea about making it more funky, I have not yet considered that.
Angie, I hope you had great fun on vacation!! if you are there, in your opinion is the fake fur a keeper and if so , dressy or casual?

I think you should keep the fake fur and wear it for fun/funky like Nicole said. I think that can be smart casual or dressy when your outfit also has a funky edge. I wouldn't necessarily wear it for straight dressy (like a formal event or a wedding) because then it might look cheesy. But a holiday party with a slightly funky outfit dressy outfit or a night out on the town would be just right in my opinion.

I think when it is snowing outside and you are going to a holiday party the fake fur one would really be fun and festive. It looks like it fits well. I like it ALOT.

I’m about to be a HUGE spanner:

o I think the faux fur is fun and fine provided it fits. I cannot tell from the picture. There are loads of boxy, chunky faux furs around and these do look “cheesy” as Antje put it.

o I do not prefer the bomber. I adore casual bombers and encourage them at every age, but not in this cut. The welt, hood and untailored silhouette are not sophisticated enough at your age. However, as a jacket to use for sports like skiing etc. it’s fine because you have it and it’s warm. (sorry and sad face)
