What's wrong with this outfit?

First, I'm really excited because I bought a pair of super-duper long pants. I'm talkin', these things just about brush the floor even with my high heels on!

I also bought a couple of blouses and a black pencil skirt and a sweet pink silk twinset (I wore the skirt/sweater today, pictures soon come!).

Anyway, please look at this and tell me what's wrong. Something is! I really love the way I look in the blouse and pants alone, but once the jacket goes on I start feeling that lumpy, dumpy, frumpy feeling.

did you try the jacket without any belt? I find that jackets left opened are much less dumpy looking on me- they allow for that long lean line.

Well, you could never look dumpy! Maybe it's the contrast between pants and jacket color? It kind of cuts the line. Do you have a light colored thick belt that you could try? That might break up the darkness of the jacket and give it a stronger structure.
Or could you try the pants and jacket with a light/medium colored shell instead of the shirt?

I think a fitted blazer would look a lot more chic. I think the jacket you're wearing is a little too boxy?

and I will add- you totally don't look dumpy- but I still say you should try leaving the jacket open

What a beautiful top, I love the color and I can relate to the elation of finding pants long enough. My thought was that maybe the belt was throwing something off, is it too high?

You look great. I think a less boho belt might change the look enough to make the parts more like you are thinking it should be.

The pants are fab! Superb length.The blouse looks a little snug on the bust but the colour is delish against your skin tone. Try another belt around the jacket. The outfit is better than you think :0)

Jenny, I ADORE that blouse, it's such a beautiful color.

Have you tried the outfit with the blouse untucked? That might help lengthen your line.

Thank you all for the sweet comments about me not looking dumpy. It's a thought that terrifies me.

The jacket is part of a suit I've had since last year. When I bought it, it was way too big, but was the smallest size I could find and I desperately needed at least one thing I could interview in. (That's when I'd first arrived back in the U.S.)

I've since gained about 5 pounds, but I do still feel like it's too boxy and big. I DID think that belting it fixed the problem, but it doesn't.

One of the things on my MustBuy list is a fitted blazer.

I will try the jacket without the belt. I only have 3 or 4 belts, so my choices are limited at the moment!

Angie - the blouse has ruching details right across the bust, which is a little distorted in the picture because of the way I'm holding my arm out to take the photo. But, 'tis true that all blouses are a little snug on my bust. LOL! There is only a slight gap at the button line there which I will take care of with my handy-dandy Hollywood Tape.

Medusa - I hadn't thought of leaving the blouse untucked. I'll try it and see how it looks. The color is so rich, and I have the same blouse in an equally fabulous purple!

Jenny, the color of that blouse is gorgeous on you. I would get a bunch of tops in that color for sure.

I agree that the jacket looks a bit too boxy. Try something more fitted over, maybe even a cardi.

I was going to say that the belt felt off to me, even before I saw Angie's post. No, really! What does it look like with the fabric belt? Or a thin leather belt? Or try it open, as others have suggested.

And you could never look dumpy.

Jenny, my thoughts were along the same lines as Tanya's - I wondered if a long/boyfriend cardigan belted would look & feel a bit sleeker. (But I don't think it's even possible for you to look dumpy. And look at that teeny-tiny waist!)

I'm wearing the outfit today with the jacket open and no belt. I'm also wearing a long-sleeved knit t-shirt under the blouse, so the jacket won't be coming off at all because it looks crazy (but is oh-so-warm).

I was running late this morning (as I do nearly every morning!) so I didn't have time to snap a pic before I left, but I'll do it this evening.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I just love this community. I'm looking forward to buying a few more great pieces to help my wardrobe work, and I think a fitted blazer would be just the ticket with this outfit. I could even picture the blouse + blazer + jeans + snappy flats for a nice weekend look.

I wore it today with the jacket open and unbelted and I was pretty happy with it. I paired it with a doubled strand of pearls and my gold sailboat earrings.

The pants creased a LOT during the day. I guess there is no way to avoid that if you sit at a desk all day, but I was embarrassed when I went to my hairdresser and the supermarket.

jenny- one thing I do to test how badly clothes might wrinkle while wearing is I take a section and scrunch it up in my hand right there while it is hanging on the rack. If I see immediate creases I walk on by... obviously things are going to show some ammount of creasing and such when you've been wearing them all day but that was a little trick I learned years ago and I do think it's saved me from buying things that were just going to be a wrinkled mess in 5 minutes.

Pant creases are pretty common, I don't think it ruins the look.
