Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Verdict needed on outfit for video shoot

My news outlet has asked me to write a story on the experience of training for a new guide dog, and they've decided to shoot a video to accompany the piece. Obviously I need you ladies to offer your feedback on the outfit I'm thinking of wearing!
My goal is to look stylish and pulled together without looking like I dressed up. I also want something that's as flattering as possible, since this video will be distributed nationally when it does move.

Here's what I'm thinking of:
http://s709.photobucket.com/al.....p;newest=1
Components = pewter snake ballet flats, straight-leg jeans, patterned top and silver/turquoise necklace. Black croco bag to finish.
I could also swap out the straight-legs and ballet flats for nearly black boot cuts and converse, if you think that would look better.

Thanks, ladies!

P.S. More shoutouts to Marianna, my official photo-poster!

Michelle, your outfit looks great. I'll let the more experienced folk comment on the specifics.

From what I remember, you should avoid big patterns and certain colors because they do not photograph well. Best to ask the producers but meanwhile here is a link that has several tips:

I think you look great (and like you've lost weight!) but my only concern is the patterned top. At my show, when we have a litigant dressed in a pattern, often times the wardrobe department will change them into a solid color. I guess sometimes pattern doesn't translate well on camera. I'm no expert though, so I don't know for sure. I do know that it depends on the pattern and colors. Angie has been on tv so she might have more insight on this!

Otherwise, I think you're achieving all your goals with this outfit! I love the flats. You're so pretty. :)

Thanks for the link, Elpgal. Very interesting -- in my television broadcast class, we were told that red was a particularly camera-friendly colour. Everything else makes lots of sense, though.
Does the pattern on this top qualify as big? Should I avoid it?

I don't know Michelle..the pattern is big but it is definitely not bold or excessive because of the nice muted colors.

I would go with a solid. It's a great outfit, though. Do you have a similar top in a solid color?

Michelle, that's so exciting! I don't know anything about clothes for TV in particular, but that is a great outfit.

Michelle, this is probably my favorite outfit that you've shown us. Love it!
My concern is that beautiful black Reva won't show up well near your black slacks. She blends into them in the photo you posted.
I don't know enough about filming to comment on pattern of your top, but it looks fantastic in the photo you posted.

Michelle, you look absolutely breath-taking in that outfit!! That is your color blue. Everything about this outfit is KILLER, from your head down to your toes. I am blown away!

Unfortunately, I agree that a patterned top is not the best choice. Patterns do funky things on film. You want a bold, solid color. You might be able get away with a pattern top like this with a solid color cardi or jacket over, if the video is going to be of you moving around in a long shot, not a close-up. If a close-up where you will be interviewed and talking, steer clear of patterns altogether.

If you had a top in this shade of turquoise blue.... oh my! You need to hunt one down, if not for this, for in general. So flattering on you. It's a softer turquoise. I am so bad with color descriptions. It's wonderful.

Also, pearls are ideal for video. Not as reflective as silver or gold. With that said, I'd totally keep the shoes as is... it's away from your face, so it won't be that distracting.

You better send us a link to the video when it's done!!

My heart skipped a beat and I squealed when I saw this outfit. (Greg was my witness). You look absolutely KILLER. Good grief. This is the best outfit I have seen you post!!! Skinnies, wrap top, necklace, ballet flats, tote and Reva. You score 20 out of 10. Have you had your hair cut? I love it short!

I’ve prepped clients for the camera and this particular pattern is just fine in my opinion. It’s big enough. It’s the small geometric patterns that look funny. I don’t want to undermine what others have said and perhaps they have more experience than I do when it comes to camera outfits. But if you were my client, you’d be wearing that top. Shiny makes a good point about swapping out the necklace. Pearls work better on camera.

Good luck! You are beautiful!

Wow Michelle, you look amazing! I have to agree that this is the best outfit I have seen you post. And Reva is absolutely adorable! I do not know anything about appropriate clothing for TV so I'll let others comment on that.

That top was meant for you! You look amazing :)

I agree! Gorgeous outfit and it's so figure flattering!

Michelle, you look fantastic in this! I love the top on you, it fits and flatters so well. I have zero experience with being on camera (unless you count my Grade 4 production of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, which you probably shouldn't), so I'm not qualified to answer that. Just wanted to chime in and say that you look great! :)

Michelle, you look beautiful! I am drooling over every aspect of this outfit. The top is amazing swirls of subdued tones, the necklace is awesome, the jeans and shoes are perfect, the bag out of this world. Wow, this is killier, and something you will not feel silly for wearing down the road, when styles change. Very good IMO. I am envious of how well you have put together colors, textures, and the sillhouette.
I have no idea about colors to wear in videos so I'll have to leave that for an expert.

Edit: Joy has a good point concerning Reva not showing up well against the black pants.

Stunning, Michelle! This is also my favorite look on you. Love your jeans! I'm not a expert for camera/TV at all, but this is your best look. Angie gave her blessing, so go for it!!

Oh wow, ladies, thank you so much for all this validation! I will walk taller while they shoot the video because of your fabulous comments.
Joy and Sandy: Interesting, I thought the jeans were an ink-blue. Could it be that they just show up as black in the pic, or is that not likely? I'm hoping Reva will show up more in the sunlight.

For all those questioning the top: what I've decided to do is actually check in with the person who's shooting the video. The piece will focus on me walking around outside with Reva and not a lot of close-up interview shots, though there will be some of that too. They're trying to get the feel for how I introduce a dog to a new place. So at the moment I'm wearing the patterned top and turquoise necklace, but I have packed my pearls and a short-sleeve fuchsia buttondown too, in case they want me to change. This is the top:
http://s709.photobucket.com/al.....siatop.jpg

If I had to sacrifice the patterned top, would this blouse and the pearls be acceptable?

Thank you so much, yet again! Oh and Shiny, of course I'll link to the video and the story when they move. :)

The color on my monitor must be off because the fushia top looks orange. Reva in her shiny coat should show up fine in the sunlight. The fushia blouse and pearls will be fine, but I hope that you can wear the print top just because it's so beautiful on you.

Good news... the girl who shot the video was very much in favour of the print top over a solid fuchsia and even wanted me to keep on my original necklace instead of the pearls! So I wore exactly what I posted. Thanks again so much for your help!

Oh good, good, good. I loved the first outfit and I'm glad to hear that the pants were blue and not black so Reva could be seen just fine. Don't get me wrong the second outfit is beautiful too, I just favored the first as something special.
How exciting for you to be in a film.

Oh my Michelle, I'm really late to this thread, I don't know how I missed it yesterday. You look stunning in the outfit you posted. I can't wait to see you and Reva on camera.

Hope the shoot goes well, I can't comment on whether the outfits are suitable for film but the 1st one is fabulous you have to wear it lots! x
