Trying: A Sheath Dress

It was 90 degrees here today already. I'm getting nervous about dressing for the heat!

I have never worn a dress like this before, but Angie suggested I try a more structured dress, and I think this might fit the bill! I like that it has the notch at the neckline - is the white cami okay? I also like the A-line. I know Angie approves of sleeveless, although I am not quite used to that yet. For some reason, I feel flats work better with the leggings. The only flats I own are these sandals. I think they're okay, but would a ballet flat look better?

I also tried it with my white denim jacket. Does the jacket look too big/bulky? Should I look for something more cropped? (Or maybe get this one tailored?)

Oh my goodness, Tara -- that looks terrific on you! It looks modern without looking teenagerish, and you can *so* do sleeveless. I know you've been trying to move away from black, but when you go out of your comfort zone in other ways (dress, leggings, sleeveless) it might be okay to hold onto one familiar aspect.

I'm not great with judging proportions, but to me the long-ish length of the jacket looks appropriate, since your top is long.

Very cute. You wear this look very well and I'm so glad you're going for it.
I think the jacket is almost right, but maybe a more fitted style would be a bit better. Are you going to need a jacket at all in LA?

Looks great! I think you can get a ton of use out of it, and leggings and sandals make it more casual. Curious - what does it look like without the belt? Is it still fitted? I agree that the jacket should ideally be shorter and more fitted. I like the white cami, too.

It's a great dress, and I don't mind the belt, but like Marianne, am curious to see how it looks unbelted.

The jacket doesn't look bulky, but something a little shorter might work better here.

I think a sheath is a great style for you! This one looks great, and now knowing what you are looking for will help as you continue adding to your dress collection.

I like it with the jacket best, but to be honest, I almost think you have too many things going on with it at once: the belt, the leggings, the jacket...maybe if you removed the leggings or the belt it would be a little more stream-lined. (Or maybe I am just not used to leggings yet, so take my advice with a large grain of salt.)

I love the sheath with leggings! Such a good shape for you. I think a shorter, more fitted jacket would look better, although I love the idea of white denim with this.

Seriously- you have found your look. To me, this is the perfect combination of structure and ease for a hot-weather casual look. And the jacket could be shorter, but it still looks great. Has a sort of just-thrown-on stylishness.

Can I ask where you got your dress? Your timing is spot on with this post because I was shopping this weekend and with all the billowy, unstructured stuff out there, I was starting to talk myself into the look "just for the summer'.... Now that I see you, and how much of a difference structure makes, I'm back on board with it. But it does seem kind of hard to find right now.

Tara, you've made a leggings convert out of me. That is a great look for you. I like the sandals but ballet flats would work. The jacket could be shorter. If some manufacturer would just come out with a light weight cropped fitted jacket for us for summer! Please!

Fantastic, Tara! Love the look on you, and the sandals are great too. I can't help but wonder, though, if black leggings are too hot for 90 degrees? Or were they okay?

Laura - I was wondering about that too. I'm not sure. I see so many women in LA wearing leggings all through the summer. I think it's probably cooler than jeans, since the leggings are mostly cotton, and thin, but I've only test-driven it inside the house so far. I definitely think it would be great for those days in the 70's/low 80's.

I'm thinking I can also wear this dress with tights and boots in the cooler weather. I have a feeling I won't wear this look every day, so the search continues for more "writer-on-the-go" outfits. (Similar to "mom-on-the-go," minus the kids!)
