thoughts on the double breasted Boyfriend jacket

Hi everyone, my question is if the boyfriend jacket is still in style, and have a long enough style life to purchase one now? It seems people are talking about tuxedo jackets now, so maybe the BF jacket is last years model?
Also is a double breasted, beautiful blue jacket with silk black band of edging on the lapels and silk covered black buttons, which is a size large for me, a good candidate for a BF jacket, with the cuffs turned up?
Am I too skinny and straight to wear a double breasted jacket? They say a double breasted jacket can maket a person look more wide, but it can also make a head look smaller and overwhelm a stick body too.

San, do the shoulders fit on the jacket that's a size too large for you?

Yeah, it's all about the shoulders, I'd say. Even on oversized BF styles, the shoulders need to fit. I'd say it's even more important for someone with your slight frame, San- you don't want it to overwhelm you. Especially with a double-breasted style!

I think the BF still has longevity. Tuxedos might be the new thing but there's room for both. Overall, this is just part of tailoring for women coming back in a big way, so I expect we'll see many different jackets making their way back into fashion in the coming seasons.

Oh San, that a good question. when I was looking for my jacket I looked at several double breasted styles but they did not look as good unbuttoned in my opinion.

I very much like the sound of a blue jacket with black satin trim though.

San, I'm glad you asked that, because I wore a double-breasted jacket on a recent post, and I received comments that the look was too boxy for me. Someone suggested a belt, or rolling up the sleeves. I'm not sure if this is considered a boyfriend jacket or not, but here's my example, if you want to use it as a Fashion Do or Fashion don't...

Tuxedo jackets seems like they might be more fringe, for awhile anyhow, than the boyfriend blazer.

I've read that rectangles should not wear double-breasted jackets, since they emphasize the straightness in the torso.

I totally agree with cciele. Tuxedo jackets are a bit more specific and "fringe". while a nice BF jacket is just a longer nicely fitted women's suit jacket that you can always wear. It is always in style, just more widely popular at times.

I am small ( size 2-4 ) and 5'6". I hate double breasted jackets. I feel they overwhelm my frame and they are meant to keep buttoned up, which makes it hard to look casual.

Thanks for the great comments and the picture from Secondhand Shopaholic.
I also look overwhelmed in the jacket if it isn't all buttoned up. Living in the Pacific Northwest it could be worn buttoned all day as part of an outfit if I wanted too. I have loved the double breasted style since I was a kid, but that doesn't mean I should wear it. I'll have my husband take sone pictures when he gets home in a bit.
I'll also photograph a blazer intended to fit me correctly which is one size smaller than the jacket we are discussing as possible BF jacket. Ofcourse they are different makers so there could be alot of variations in the sizing. Pictures don't lie, so we'll have some fun here. I should have them up in an hour or so.
I read in a style magazine online, a designer (can't remember who) said that the boyfriend jacket should be a bit too big for you in the shoulders, and you should roll up the sleeves, all in an attempt to make it look like you borrowed it from your boyfriend. Since this is a bit big in the shoulders, I thought it could possibly be a boyfriend jacket. Now I'm hearing you all say that the shoulders should fit for a BF jacket. Again it's all in the looks of it.

San: we'll know more when we see the photos, but I think the boyfriend blazer is tricky and I haven't nailed it yet. So many fit variables in terms of shoulders, where it hits you hip-wise, the stance, etc. As rectangles, I believe we are advised to avoid double breasted jackets as they tend to look boxy, which does not create the illusion of curves we are looking for. Probably a good general guideline, but if you love double breasted styles give it a try, and take a pic for us to see.
