Terror in Toronto: Michelle tries Leggings!

Oooooo-kay... Angie challenged me to give leggings a go awhile back, and I've finally plucked up the courage to try. Extreme self-consciousness about my size will likely prevent me from looking too confident in these pics, but here goes. Comments welcome on the whole thing, i.e. the dress (tunics were too short), the leggings themselves, the shoes I paired with them and the necklaces I have on. Particularly the pearls in combo no. 1 (see below for specific questions).

1. Shhorter-length leggings, from the front. Please give me feedback not just on the whole dress/leggings ensemble, but on the pearls too. Are they YLF-approved, and do they work with this outfit?

2. Same outfit, but from the back. So you can really size up (pun sort of intended) the appropriateness of this look for me. And whether the heels work:

3. Same dress with a longer, thicker pair of leggings and ballet flats:

Over to you! And please, be completely honest. If this look just isn't flattering, I'd be eternally grateful if you told me so straight and prevented me from inflicting some unspeakable fashion crime upon the unsuspecting population.

Yay! I've been waiting to see you in leggings. First off- the pearls are *fab*! Those are a keeper for sure. I really like the color of this dress on you- and it's a nice neckline, but it's a little short. I think that a dress that hits at the top of your kneecap will be a more flattering look for you. You could wear this tunic dress with your pearls, white or denim clamdiggers and the heels. I like the shorter leggings, but with a longer dress you may want to find a legging that is just in between the two lengths (if that's possible), or just stick with the long ones. I think you're well on your way, Michelle!

The shorter leggings are totally adjustable. I could make them longer easily, I was just trying to stick to Angie's rule of clam length for this type of thing. I was following the same guideline for the length of the dress... Glad you like the pearls though!

You look great. I love the dress/tunic and the pearls. You absolutely can wear this look.
I prefer the flats to the wedge shoes. I like both lengths for leggings.
Keep experimenting and you will likely have several outfits you can make with the leggings. Good for you for trying something new.

Michelle, I think that you scored a winner with the dress. My favorite combination is with the pearls and the clamdigger-length leggings - I'm not good at deconstructing proportion with leggings, but something about the lengths you're wearing just *works* when I look at you.

I also really admire you in the dress you chose. The colors are *gorgeous* - I think you look absolutely stunning in rich colors. Your skin looks just flawless. Surprisingly, I also like the volume of the dress - and I only say "surprisingly" because I'm one of the folks around here who is very cautious about volume and have a hard time adjusting my eye to it. I like how the dress flows gently but we can still see a hint of where your waist is.

I'm really curious to see what Angie says!

You nailed it as far as I'm concerned. I think you could go longer with the leggings but they look fine as is (as are?). The pearls are a keeper too. Love the colors in the dress too!

I like this look on you very much.:) The color on the dress/tunic...very pretty.
Nice job!!

I love the dress on you, so pretty. I think I prefer the ballet flats. Either length legging works for me and the pearls are perfect! You are very fashionable.

YOU, my dear Michelle, have TOTALLY got it down. You ROCK leggings with the best of them. The shorter length is perfect! And pearls are just beautiful. KILLER. I’m blown away. WOW! Well done!!!

Michelle, I love your dress and leggings combination! I also vote for the flats. This is a great look on you.

Great work Michelle!
I prefer the longer leggings and the ballet flats. I also think that the dress should be just a bit more fitted..

I think you look lovely Michelle. I like either length of leggings, but I do prefer the ballet flats. I love the colors in the dress.

I love the new pearls - they are perfect!! But, I think I prefer this outfit with the other necklace. I'm not sure if I can articulate why; I think the second necklace is more in keeping with the leggings trend. The pearls will get lots of use, but just for this outfit, I like the other necklace.

As for the outfit, I like it with either the long or short leggings. But I'm with Rute: I only wish the dress had a bit of waist definition. It may be because I spent hours last night looking through baby girl clothing and something about the cut of this dress is striking me as a bit baby dollish. But I am thinking adding a wide belt, or a cardigan or a jean jacket would give you that definition. Can you try that for us?

It looks really comfortable! Do you find it comfortable? I bet this dress would also look great over jeans. (white or dark denim)

Pearls, dress, shorter leggings, and ballet flats -- you got yourself a KILLER outfit! Plus, all of that can mixed and matched with a ton of other items. Well done!

Are you kidding me?? This is one of the best things I've seen you wear! Killer! Wear with confidence!

You look smashing in leggings Michelle. LOVE the green on you, goes so very well with your complexion. I like the shorter length better. And those pearls are KILLER! No terror in Toronto, just terrific in Toronto!

Michelle, I think you look fan-diddly-tastic in leggings!! (My husband is a Simpsons fan...I couldn't resist.)

I think you look wonderful in leggings. With this particular dress, I like the shorter leggings and flats the best. Like Shiny, I think the pearls are beautiful, but prefer the other necklace for this outfit.

Way to go!

Watch out Toronto. Michelle has ARRIVED. I forgot to comment on the other necklace. It’s super fab too! I had to look at you rock this vibe again this morning. KILLER. Please post your outfit on the leggings thread!

Michelle, I think you look great. I would prefer the cropped leggings just a tiny bit longer (for more calf definition). You look fantastic in these darker jewel colors, they really bring out your great skin and hair color.

Amazing, awesome, killer! You look wonderful, Michelle! I love it all.

Hey Michelle!

You look great. Absolutely no terror for the people of our fair city!

Michelle, this is a great look! I think it's a bit more fashion forward than I've seen you do and you do it wonderfully. I like the shorter length legging and either of the shoes are great. I like the pearls.

Have we convinced you yet, Michelle? I know that McClure approves of the look too.

Oh ladies, thank you so much for the feedback and reassurance. :) I'll tweak the ensemble a bit when I wear it out; I'm in the market for silver or pewter flats which I will pair with this getup, and then I think I'll road-test it. What do you all think of Shiny's suggestion of a belt to emphasize my waist a bit more (ironic, given Angie's challenge to us all today). For some reason I always avoided belts, but I could give it a go if I found one. Would black be best, or would that break up the dress too much?

Another question: what kind of look does this qualify as? Is it smart casual, or would it be appropriate for a newsroom?
