Spring outerwear -- matchy or complementary?

I am going to need to purchase a pair of rainboots and a trench this spring. I had a couple of older boxy trenches that are getting discarded this year (also in horrible light blue and pink colors, all wrong for me now), and last year I picked up a great bright poppy-colored trench from Talbots -- it was somewhere between orange and red, and I LOVED it. I suspect it will be much too large this spring, since all my winter coats are already too big.

Ooooh, correction! I just tried it on; the poppy trench is only an XL and it fits great! Whoo, that changes my plan.

I am CRAZY about the pattern, and have been on a big navy/blue kick this year. I am still strongly considering it as a second coat.

If it had only been that trench, I was thinking about these boots in salsa orange.

But now that it will be the poppy trench and maybe the blue, perhaps a navy rainboot will be more appropriate.

I am intrigued by this pattern, but the reviews are not great and I think the pattern and colors would not work with either trench.

Lastly, I'll be looking at cream purses and totes this year. I'm going to check out the Limited one we discussed elsewhere:

I saw it in the store and the leather looked and felt pretty good!

I've also got the Kate Spade cream purse on my wishlist. I think I might get it as my reward for losing 50 pounds. (27 and counting now!)

So, what do you guys think? Is everything too matchy, or will it be nicely complementary? Any other suggestions for rainboot colors?

I think navy wellies with a cream purse would be beautiful with either coat, but especially the salmon one you already have!!

I think the navy wellies would look great with the navy and white trench. I think that the patterned wellies are probably too patterned to go with the trench though would look good with a plainer coat.

I've got a patterned blue raincoat which i got navy sparkly wellies to go with.

Thanks for the encouragement, both of you. I think it's gonna be the navy trench and wellies, too. I already ordered adorable red polka-bot wellies from Target, but now that I realize they go with nothing I have. So as soon as they arrive, they'll be going back!

Hi Kristen. The navy trench is lovely! If you're going with that one, you could also try yellow, green or purple wellies...

Another vote for the navy patterned trench. I would go with rain boots in solid bright with, like Inge suggests.
