sort of OT: How do you store your jewelry?

I've recently decided that I really should wear my jewelry more often. Pulling it all out has made me realize that I need some way to store it all, preferably in an attractive and organized manner. Right now I have jewelry in random boxes, pouches, and just sitting around. It's a big mess - my chains keep getting tangled up with each other. The other problem is that I'm much more likely to see it and wear it if it's all in one place and organized.

So, show me how your store your jewelry! I'd prefer something not exposed to the air (so a box of some kind I guess) since I have a bunch of silver that I'd like to prevent from tarnishing too quickly. I also don't have many earrings since I don't have pierced ears, so I'm primarily looking to store necklaces, bracelets, rings, and a few brooches.

I have some velvet lined trays with compartments similar to the one in the link but mine are covered in prettier fabric outside. I stack 3 of them in one of the drawers in my bathroom and they hold most of my stuff. I found them at Marshalls.

I was on the hunt for the perfect jewelry box for years, but could never find one I liked.

I finally found the perfect solution last year: a hanging jewelry organizer. It hangs up on its own hanger in my closet, and the pockets are clear so I can see everything I have quickly and easily. (The picture is not mine, but it's what it looks like.) It also takes up so little room, and is perfectly packable. I got mine off Amazon.

Elpgal: Those are wonderful, but I don't have a drawer to put them in! I'd be afraid of tipping them over if they were on a shelf... If they came in a box, it would be perfect!

Syrah: I actually do have a hanging jewelry organizer, but it has six large pockets rather than a bunch of small ones, so I have to put multiple things in there and they get jumbled up. Maybe I should look for one like the one you showed. I've also found that my silver jewelry seems to get tarnished very fast in the hanging organizer for some reason.. maybe it does not like the plastic?

Diana.. are you talking nice jewelry or costume. I think the hanging bags are great for costume jewelry, but gold and silver needs to be stored in a jewelry box. Also, if you keep a piece of chalk or a couple of those silicon shoe box packets in your jewelry box it will help with the tarnishing problem (they absorb the moisture)

I hang all mine on a wall rack and 95% of it is sterling silver. I never knew about chalk or silicon absorbtion packets for tarnishing. Mine stays organized this way but I would consider an alternative if it really makes a difference in tarnishing. I keep my polishing cloth stuffed right at the top of the rack for now.

I have more necklaces and bracelets, both metal and beads, than is reasonable, and I have many of them hanging in three chandeliers I picked up for cheap just for that purpose. Blues and blacks and greys go on one, browns and yellows in another, reds and greens in another. That way the pieces are in sight and easy to reach, and look nice on my shelves. That's only for the bead necklaces, though, as metals are kept in jewelry boxes, and display cases (what can I say? I make them, and I sell them, so over the years I've amassed an insane amount of baubles

QM: Thanks for the tip on the silicon packets! I have both costume and nicer jewelry, including quite a bit of sterling silver. Ideally I'd like to keep it all together or at least in two boxes next to each other or something. At the moment, the nicer stuff is in various boxes and pouches (a lot of it is in the boxes it came in, which are OK but kind of annoying to use on a regular basis) which is keeping it nice but I'd like to have it all in one place and easily visible. I think you're right that I need a jewelry box and not a hanging organizer.

Diana - thanks for posting this. It's encouraged me to get on with my jewellery organisation. I have my fine jewellery in boxes, but it's the beads that were starting to overflow. I have made use of an old tie hanger of DH's (waste not, want not...). A bit like this - different design but same result:

I keep mine in something I picked up in the craft or fishing department at Wally World (can't remember which). It is basically a plastic box with individual plastic boxes inside (with lids). Mine are different sizes, so I do have something to store larger pendants in. I have a lot of silver jewelry as well, and it seems to keep the tarnish down, but I have a ton of earrings and pendants and fewer bulky necklaces or bracelets. Then I keep all of my fine jewelry in the velvet boxes in a small lock box-- I rarely wear most of these pieces, but most of them were given to me by my grandfather.

My earrings are on painted ikea picture frames with window screen material attached. Everything else is in clear plastic organizer boxes from the home depot.

A related question: a couple of you have mentioned keeping nicer jewelry in velvet lined boxes. It tends to also come in velvet lined boxes when you buy it. Is there a particular reason why velvet is good? Or is it just because it's soft and luxurious?

I got this from Amazon and it works well for me. It has the silver protecting cloth inside to help silver, but I still throw those little silcon packets in the less stable pieces. It IS double sided, but they aren't explicit in the description:

It doesn't hold bulky things well, but I have drawer storage for those.

I found I don't like my jewelry hanging *out* as I think it gets dull (dusty?) if not worn often.

I have a jewelry box for my nice jewelry. I used to keep my costume jewelry in a box, but I found that I never wore it or even thought about it. So now I have a fabric covered bulletin board that I hand the earrings and necklaces on with straight pins. Its getting a bit overloaded and I think I'm going to need to get a bigger one. I love it - as I get ready in the morning I glance around the board and can quickly assess almost all of my jewelry and pick exactly what the outfit needs.

I don't have the solution that included hanging my jewelry, but I use organza bags. That way nothing is entangled, nor it scratches other pieces and I can easily see what's inside.

And I keep bangle-type bracelets in the bottom part.

I use a multi-drawered chest that was made for small shop parts, like this one

only mine is a bit smaller. You can get versions that include larger drawers at the bottom, and when I get a second one to house my expanding collection, I will add one of those.

I love this because things are more visible and I can sort them by color. If you wanted to line some of the drawers with special tarnish prevention fabric or whatever, that's always an option.
