Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Shopping ban FAIL-rate my new dresses

Hi there! I’ve been MIA for a few weeks. Some various RL stuff popped up and dealing with that didn’t allow much of extra time for anything, including internet and shopping. It made sticking to my October shopping ban quite easy. Until this weekend, that is. . .

Truthfully, I never should have tried these dresses on because I knew that if I liked them, I’d be bringing them home. But I did, and here they are, waiting for your opinion!

Green dress:
I like it, but I’m unsure about the cowl neck. Can I wear a cowl neck? Should I? I tried it on with some different boot and belt options. Does one stand out as a better combination, or do they all work? It was also available in gray. I liked the green a lot but maybe gray is a better option. Thoughts?

Black dress:
The first picture shows the dress just as it is, and it’s a bit long for my taste and needs. I’d have it taken up. It doesn’t show in the pictures, but it has a small bit of ruching on the left side. As is, this dress has a bit of a dressier feel to me but I’m looking for a day dress to wear with slouch boots, ballet flats, etc. Does this dress work for that? Can I do better? Again, I’ve tried different looks and accessories with it, plus I pinned it up to the length I’d likely have it hemmed. I mentioned the ruching-is it okay to wear a belt with a detail like that? I tried, but don’t know if one is supposed to or not.

Here are the pictures. Brutal honestly and constructive criticism is very much appreciated!

Sorry I always look like such a sourpuss, I don’t like having my picture taken. Thanks for the input!

Hi there-
I really like the green cowl neck on you. It is very flattering. I like it best with the wider brown belt.

The black dress isn't doing much for me, although I must say I really like it with the cranberry sweater. The neckline seems too high for you or something.

I vote keep the green and return the black ;-)

I think both dresses are fab. You look lovely in that shade of green, I wouldn't replace it with grey.

I think the cowl neckline really works for you, too. Love the way the green dress fits. I don't love the black neckline as much, but it works better with the sweater over it, IMHO.

I really like the green dress and I like the black dress. When I wear my black crew neck sweater dress I like to wear a long scarf over it. It may be worth a try. I couldn't really make out the ruching on the black dress so would not like to comment on if the belt works.

I adore both dresses! I actually prefer the black dress to the green. Isn’t that interesting :0)

My thought was the black is versitile and flattering. I don't care for the green in color or the band at the bottom. I also think the cowl is to floppy looking.
The series of pictures was fun because it was a good lesson in how different hieght of boots change a look. The black dress really transformed when you put a belt on and changed boots.
