Seatbelt bags

Hi everyone. I was hoping to get some opinions on seatbelt bags. http://www.seatbeltbags.com/viewall.html

I don't buy any leather products, so finding purses is not easy for me. I own some Matt and Nat purses, but I really need something I can use to carry my computer, and I would like it to be cute and fashionable.

I was thinking about the seatbelt bag in black and white. http://www.seatbeltbags.com/blandwhlatoz.html Normally I like more color, but the contrast of the black and white in the checkerboard design is really stark and clean, and I like it. Also, because I wear a lot of color in my clothing and this bag will have to go with me whenever I am carrying my computer (almost every day to and from work, and when I travel), having black and white might be good as a bold neutral. (Is "bold neutral an oxymoron?)

Anyway, I think I want to get this bag, but I thought I would check in here to make sure I'm not crazy in thinking this is cute and would work as a computer bag. :)

Also, if anyone has suggestions of vegan bags (no leather), please feel free to pass them along. I am not concerned about cost--I have found that I have to spend a lot for nice non-leather goods. I have even considered a few Stella McCartney bags, but I don't really like many of them.

Thanks!

Hi Steph, I love the look of the seatbelt bags in the pics, so I personally think you're not crazy at all :-) In fact, I ordered one myself about a year ago, but I didn't like it as much once I saw it up close and held it in my hands. It looks sleeker on the website than in reality; I found it just a bit too stiff and bulky looking, and I returned it. Your mileage might vary...
Someone posted a link to a site for non-leather bags a while ago, maybe it was Maya??

Thanks Antje. I was looking on their site to see how I could return the bag, but they don't have any instructions. Did you order from their website, or through another retailer?

I tried to search for the link you mentioned for non-leather bags, but no luck. The major ones I know of are Matt and Nat, which puts out a nice product, and Stella McCartney.

I love the look of the bags--especially the black and white you are fond of.

Sweet! I like the slings best. Have you seen them first hand? I have. Nice quality.

I love the look of these. Did any of you watch Project Runway this week? One of the designers made an awesome coat dress out of seat belts - very elegant and unexpected.

Steph, I had ordered mine from a different retailer, it was probably Zappos. Nothing to lose with their free return policies! They have tons of them:

Steph, I have a messenger style seatbelt bag that I've had for at least 8 or 9 years. I like the look and it has held up well. Since mine is so old, it doesn't have any interior pockets for phones and such so I don't carry it much anymore. I don't know if the newer ones have this feature now or not. I'd buy one again.

Yeah - very project runway! I predict we will be seeing people toting these seatbelt bags everywhere - due to the project runway factor!

I'm not vegan, but I love anything we can do to recycle creatively and save the environment.

I have a clutch purse made out of soda can tabs, and recently I saw a woman who had a similar shoulder bag. She and I got to chatting about our bags; she says she constantly gets stopped and asked about hers. I told her I liked mine because it's great when we go out to bars - fits with the theme and I don't mind it sitting on a sticky bar. ;-)

Steph, I love the seatbelt bags and Matt and Nat as well, and as I think you know, I do not wear leather either. However, for the purposes of really protecting your laptop, I think you would do better to get a proper case with adequate shock absorption. I have a nonleather girly tote but it was meant for laptops, so it has a lot of padding and some pockets and things like that. It's like a microfiber kind of material. I'll check the brand and get back to you.

Thanks so much for the feedback! Angie, I haven't seen them in person, so I'm glad that you like the quality. Dani, looking at the description of the purses, it looks like they have a cell phone pocket and a couple of other interior pockets now. Maybe it's time to get a second one. :)

Julijuli, I did watch Project Runway, but I had actually been thinking about this bag before that. I'm actually worried that I'll buy it and suddenly everyone will have one because of the Runway factor, but I bet most people who watched Runway don't even know about the seatbelt bags.

Shiny, I love the soda can tab purse It has such a good chain-link look to it. I wonder if it is still for sale anywhere.

Nicole, I really like the black and white too--I definitely prefer it to the single color options. Unfortunately, I can't order from Zappos like Antje because they don't seem to offer the black and white version. I'm trying to find the black and white version on a site that allows for returns, but without much luck.

Maya, I was thinking I would buy one of those laptop sleeves to protect the laptop--put it in there, and then stick the whole thing in the seatbelt bag. But if you love your laptop bag, I would be happy to look at the link! I haven't bought anything yet, after all. :)
