Is there a sandal equivalent to the fashion sneaker? If so, what does it look like? It's supposed to be 90 tomorrow so I'm thinking I should start scoping out my summer sandals.

Do you mean an open shoe or a shoe that you can wear with a dress/skirt?

Are you looking for pretty or comfortable? I mean, ideally they'll be both, but are you looking for sandals you wear to work, for going out, or for walks in the neighborhood? By "fashion sneaker equivalent" I initially assumed you meant sandals for very casual occasions, but I don't know if that's true if you plan to wear them with dresses, too. Can you clarify, so we can send the right pointers?

I'm looking for something casual and very comfortable but pretty too. I will wear them on the weekend with my kids with walk shorts, skirts and knit dresses. Around here people wear a lot of those awful flip flops or something like Birkenstocks for casual.

Got it. You might try Naturalizer - they have very comfortable shoes and sandals (with and without heels) that don't look like Birkenstocks.

Try Aerosoles too. I was there this morning and they are a good fit for a wider foot if you happen to have one.

I love the first selection, Nicole. Unfortunately, I can't wear slides. I can't seem to keep my feet in them and end up walking funny or shuffling. Unfortunately, a great many cute sandals seem to be slides currently!

When you say you can't wear slides, do you mean the back of your foot comes out of the open back of the shoe? So, are you looking for something with an ankle strap? Or something that sits higher on your foot, closer to your ankle? (like a gladiator sandal?)

Also, can you tolerate a small heel? Do you like wedges? Would you rather a flat sandal? How about a thong sandal (not a beach flip flop, but an actual leather sandal that has a strap between your toes--would you be comfortable wearing that?)

Maybe what would suit you best isn't an actual sandal, but more of a canvas skimmer? Or maybe you whould consider a ballet flat? Angie posted some cute ones that had cut outs so they were airy and summery.

Nicole, I have to have a strap around my heel (or the shoe has to have a back), so flip-flop type thongs are out. I am looking for something quite casual to wear with walking shorts, a knee-length khaki skirt, or (God forbid) capris, so I would prefer no wedge. The summer sandals I have gotten in the past don't really have a heel, but a thicker sole with perhaps a 1/2" to 3/4" rise to the heel of the shoe. Fashion sneakers in the summer are a bit too enclosed as my feet tend to sweat and then the shoes get smelly very quickly. Here is an example of the type of sandal I have worn in the past:

I don't think they are clunky...and if you got them in a lighter color, they would look lighter and more streamlined.

Super. Your wider foot will streamline the chunkiness of this heel. Paint those toes and you'll have pretty feet. I actually like this style in black!

Thanks for the suggestions! I love to browse shoes and what I'm trying to determine really is where to draw the line at a casual sandal and a sandal that's gear or for lounging. I actually like some of the more feminine styles of Birkenstocks and in the past I have bought Born sandals which I find quite comfy. Are these acceptable casual sandals? On the other end of the spectrum what constitutes a casual sandal and a sandal that is acceptable for work? Thanks ahead of time.

Becky's selection is most along the lines of what I'm thinking combines comfort and cuteness. I definitely want something flat. I've also tried Naot in the past as well which are very comfortable but are not as kind to my sole skin.
