Wow, how exciting! Congratulations!!!

Congratulations, Ornella!

We got our keys at 10:30 am. Tonight is our last night in a hotel. The movers arrive with our belongings tomorrow!

Carla :: I was telling my husband yesterday how I shared the beginning of this journey with one Fabber (Christy's house was also built on the plot no.21) and the end with you (we got the keys on the same date). It makes things even sweeter for me.

Happy unpacking

SO excited and happy for you!!!!! Best of luck with the moving in and unpacking, arranging and rearranging! Thanks for sharing the journey with us!

[Update: 17th July 2014]

The move happened on the 12th July. Overwhelming.

We did not have much stuff to move, so it was relatively easy. What surprised me, although not too much, were my emotions of the day - but not because of the move (finally!) but gratitude and happiness for being surrounded with the new friends we made in the past two years and who selflessly offered to help us.

The new neighbourhood is amazing - wonderful people, helpful, kind. Very international too. I think we all secretly feel relieved we're surrounded by the nice people, as it's always a lottery who the next-door neighbours will be.

The first glitches happen, but are manageable. I'm confident with the language, there is no room for shyness, even with my limited vocabulary a lot gets done.

But, the queen of all mix-ups are our kitchen fronts. Apparently, taupe is the new white - because we had been delivered the taupe kitchen fronts instead of white. I am still recovering from the initial shock, but luckily our salesman had owned up the mistake in the ordering process and the fronts will be exchanged. Until then I can't fully enjoy the kitchen which I had looked forward to so much and which looks really beautiful. To see the space Mr O. and I had planned carefully being actually built around us is a magical feeling. We already use it as a hub of our family life and it feels great, I can only imagine what it'll feel like when it's in the right colour. Our son's comment when he saw it was "This is cool!" which of course makes me extra happy.

I barely have time for anything but sorting out a lot of things, unpacking is yet to begin. I'm tired, but relieved.

Final countdown:

Very happy for you and your family on the big move. There are always glitches aren't there? Thankfully the contractor is setting it right.
Raising my glass to wish you many happy moments in your new space.

Congratulations Ornella! How wonderful to start to get settled into your new home and surrounded by such fab neighbors. I'm so happy for you

[Final update: 28th July 2014]

Projekt Haus 21 has come to its end and this is my final update (as it happens - also number 21) on this thread about where we are and what comes next.

The end of this month was the milestone as we had to empty the old apartment we were renting for the past two years by then, which meant turning the new leaf at the new address - something ours, permanent and finally a place we can call home.

It was a long journey I have tried to capture here as well, so I can some day look back at the time that's past and everything significant that has happened.

It was a stressful journey to say the least - never would I think I'd embark on something like building a house in the country where I spoke no language at the beginning of the process, and where the whole process was as new and complicated as it could be. Still, we are here - at the other end. Tired, worn out, but happy. And proud.

It was a massive learning curve not just in all things construction related. Those learnings will serve me well. For that I am grateful.

There are so many things that are heartwarming - we live on no.5, which is also the very first address number we lived on, my mum's name appears on the house purchase contract because of my cousin who assisted us at the time of the signing and who is mentioned in the contract too; but most of all, I am grateful for people - those who were with us, by us, before this whole thing and even started; those who helped us along the way and whose contribution to our sanity remaining intact can hardly be captured with words; those who helped us move, and finally, those who are with us - right now - creating a new neighbourhood, a new community.

It only feels right to finish this thread with the photos of that community - everyone working together this weekend to prepare our gardens for planting the grass and plants. Tools and toys, boots and bare feet, gloves and hands, all working to prepare the soil for the plants that we'll hopefully all enjoy for yard to come.

Thank you again to everyone who commented on this thread.

I hope some say, some of you will be my guests. Our hope is that this house is not just a home, but a place of gathering of the people we love and respect.
