New Modcloth dresses :(

I'm pretty sure these are both going back...but what the hell, I'll post them.

This was my first order from Modcloth and I don't think either of them are going to work. But what do you guys think? Could they be saved with different styling? If you agree that they don't work, what is it about them that doesn't, so I know what to avoid?

Dress #1, with black tights, black cardi, red shoes:

Dress #2, with gray tights and gray layering tee (ignore the expression on my face, my husband took this before I was ready). The lighting is bad here, but the dress is a dark burgundy.

Actually, I really like the first one under the cardi. That's a hard style to pull off on an ample bosom (believe me, I have tried). If you're okay wearing it under a cardi or jacket, I would keep it, but if you want something more versatile, I would pass.

The second one looks fine to me but I sympathize with your hesitations. I hate wearing anything that makes me look "all boobs" on top, which sometimes happens with an empire waist. You might want to try it with a different layer underneath, as the one you're currently wearing has a competing neckline which is sort of distracting.

If I wear an empire waist, I prefer a thick band below the bust (though I can't rationalize why), like so:

or some blousing on top, which minimizes the bust. You might also want to try more v neck styles.

I think the first one with the cardi looks great! Not so sure about the second one though.

The first one is absolutely adorable! I vote keep! The second one is hard to see due to lighting.

I love the first one! The shoes with it makes it that much cuter. The second one I am not sure about but definitely keep the first!

Wow, I'm surprised you like the first one. I think it definitely looks better with the cardigan but look at the second photo - I swear, my boobs are not that low-slung IRL!

And they were so cute on the website. Wah.

I would trust your own judgement.... We are only seeing one angle, after all. I would definitely try and replicate the look in the first photo, though, maybe with a dress you feel better about. The combo of the colors and cardigan with the cowl-ish neckline is great!

And I'm impressed to see anyone post photos of something they don't like! Thanks for being brave

If you're short-waisted, I've found, there are two sweet spots on the torso--one is right under the bust and the other is at the natural waist. It looks like the checked dress is hitting you somewhere in between, which is shortening your torso and emphasizing your bust, but not in a way that makes you happy. The neckline isn't helping, either--it has a widening effect. The reason the first look works is that it hides the proportions that are bothering you. I really like the look of a black cardi with a checked dress, but I think your instincts are right--the proportions on this dress aren't working for you.

how do the dresses feel? I've never ordered from ModCloth before - do they seem to be quality made?

The quality is not fantastic, but it's fine for what I paid. The houndstooth dress is unlined, for example.

They're going back today and I'm going to keep looking, but based on your feedback I'd really like to try a different checked dress to re-create that first outfit.
