Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Lusting after Boden items - reality check, please?

I'm finding a lot of Boden's fall clothes really appealing. But, I feel like I have bought a lot recently and don't really NEED anything. So before spending a lot of money I'm hoping for a reality check. What you think of these items, do you think they'd fit well with my style, etc.

Here's the list:

I'm just so taken by polka dots that I love this in all the colors.

I might get one more cardigan like this, but this one seems a bit pricy.

Long cardigan and interesting colors (the purple one) - seems great.

I am utterly smitten with this jacket. I have no need for another blazer, but I just adore this one.

Another blazer I don't need, and this time I LOVE it in all the colors/prints they have - dots, plaid, & stripe.

Again, I don't really need a coat but this one is adorable.

I want to get a denim pencil skirt, but maybe not one so expensive?

The purple tweed trousers are really cute.

medusa, I will be of no help if I tell you I adore the colorblock cardigan and coat and the plaid jacket, will I? LOL, sorry. But that's they way it is, once you find your groove you just can't seem to stop!

I'd buy the more unique items, like the colorblock cardigan (amazing!), the cute stuff with the dots, and the interesting blazers. The rainbow coat is gorgeous. The boyfriend cardi and trousers are more ordinary, in my opinion, and can be bought elsewhere. I like the pencil skirt, but I do think you could find one for a little less money.

I love you in statement pieces as you look so statuesque that you wear them with ease. The only item I think qualifies as statement in a non cutesy way is the poker dot blazer.

All of the other items are beautiful but in my opinion do not have the Medusa stamp.

I know... my mom and I pored over the Boden catalogue together lusting after so many of the pieces. It doesn't help that my mom kept pointing out looks that she thought would be perfect for me. Good thing I'm on a budget, I guess!

I especially love the Rainbow Coat in green. So pretty.

If you like the purple check trousers, they are actually very similar to a pair that I just picked up from Express (since I literally wore through my last pair of wool trousers.) I think this is the same one I got though mine look a bit darker in person. They have several similar checked styles too. Not sure how the quality compares to Boden since I have never worn Boden's wool pants.

Wow, what a great selection of interesting pieces! I am with others. I would suggest considering buying the more unique items that you cannot find elsewhere. My choices would be color block cardigan, rainbow coat and definitely the plaid blazer, it is fantastic!
Also, since these are all statement pieces, I think you should also consider how many outfits you can put together with these pieces and how well they fit with the rest of your wardrobe.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm going to think about it for a bit and see if I remain obsessed. :-)

Kari, thanks for pointing out those Express pants. They often have good coupons & sales, so that could be a good way to get that style of pants for much less.

The stuff you’ve linked to is adorable and you’ll look great in it!

But I *am* going to be your reality check my dear Medusa. Put your new pieces through their paces first which means waiting for Autumn to arrive. Once you’ve done that, you’ll get a sense of what’s missing and which looks you’d like to add or duplicate. We’ll talk again then :0)

Yup, I am of the same mind -- put a few of the statement pieces on your wishlist, a few that will fill out holes in your wardrobe, mind you! If they're still on your mind after a few weeks (meaning you haven't found something better), chances are you should go for it :)

BTW, my favs are the colourblock cardi and the plaid jacket.

I am in the *same* boat ... have been carrying around Boden's fall catalog all weekend trying to narrow down what I want. September is my birthday month, and I always buy a pile of new clothes to celebrate! Two things ... (1.) Boden has a buy 3 get 1 free sale on so definitely don't pay full price, and (2.) your favorites will sell out, but they'll restock and go on sale after Christmas. I always prioritize and mark things in the catalog to look for on sale later. I think you can find similar less expensive cardigans and a denim skirt elsewhere. Spend your money on the special details (like the ribbon trim on that awesome coat), patterns (oh, that sweet polkadot blouse!), & colors (have not seen purple tweed trousers anywhere else!) Happy shopping!

Medusa,

Maybe you could just narrow your selection.. the cardigans are expensive, you'll find others less expensive, however I think that the denin skirt is a good investement because it is so dificult to find one that has no zipper on the front (the zipper on the front makes the belly bigger).

If you have a budget, make a list of the things you need with the amount you have to spend.

If you have no budget and can spend .. go for it!
