Help with 2 new purchases - YouLookFab Forum

I took pictures of a couple of recent purchases that I am struggling with. Sorry about the quality, but I can't get it done during the daylight hours and I can't wait until the weekend, because I need to return the skirt before then.

1 - Boden skirt, the same one that Kari and Medusa got. I haven't worn a pencil skirt in over 10 years, so it's very hard for me to judge. Not sure if I am too straight for this kind of skirts.

2 - jacket. I am not returning it, but I am looking for styling ideas. I am a little at a loss - it seems that this type of jacket is often combined with a flowy top, but I don't have anything that would work. It looks like a button down would have a collar conflict. Any suggestions for both tops and bottoms? And does it look OK open? The color is dark navy, and buttons are black, so I am hoping to make it work with black.

I think the skirt looks great.
As for the jacket (love it!) I'm imagining a frilly/lacy blouse with mandarin(?)style collar peeking out the top and bottom of the jacket.

I think that the skirt is absolute killer on you Marianne. If you want to add more curves I would wear a simple knitted top over and add a waist cinching belt.

That jacket is gorgeous! I think you could do many many things with it, such as :
1. a black flowy top and black skinnies/jeans
2. simple black fitted top
3. jeans and a top in cream/or yellow etc.

Oooh Marianne the skirt is perfect on you! Jacket is nice as well. SOrry I'm no help with styling tips. Whatever is underneath you won't see much of though, right?

Thank you for the comments, ladies! I am glad the skirt gets approval. I wasn't sure if I need to be looking for something more tapered (although I don't know if I'd be able to walk in it).

Does the jacket look fine unbuttoned? Angie, would a button down work with this type of collar? I'll probably wear it mostly with jeans, because I don't have many business casual bottom options.

Marianne, I wear button downs under collars like this. Just pop them! Love the jacket unbuttoned. Looks best that way me thinks.

Both items look wonderful on you. I think you could wear that cute jacket with dresses and skirts as well as jeans. It would look cute with a skirt like that on p 55 of the Talbots book as well as pencil skirts.

Both items look killer on you marianne! I LOVE LOVE the jacket. Tanya has some great tips on styling it. I personally love the look of buttondowns with such jackets. Pop the colllar, add a scarf if you want, and it will look fantastic.

Marianne your legs are KILLER! You should wear skirts all the time. This skirt looks great on you!! You do not look too straight at all. You look very feminine.

I love both items on you Marianne, I addicted to stripes at the moment and would wear a bretton style striped top with the denim skirt, or a simple cowl neck.

The jacket looks absolutely amazing on you, I would wear with cigarette pants and a longer length top.

BTW your rectangle body shape is amazing!

I am very late to this but both items look gorgeous on you Marianne. I actually think the skirt adds curves since it is so tight, much like skinnies. The jacket looks super open and closed.

I also had the same reaction as Julie when I saw the jacket. Stripes just seem right.
