Help Me Pick Specs?

Hi Everyone!

I finally made it to the eye glass shop where I want to buy my glasses. I am getting my eye exam done at a different doctor that is part of our insurance network, but this place in Austin has a really great selection of funky specs, better than any of the shops that are in my network, so I went there today to try on some frames and take photos. There were SO many fun options, and the gal at the counter was really great and helpful. She and I narrowed it down to a few frames that we thought were best. I'd like to get all of your opinions though, before I make my final choice. If you all would help me decide, that would be wonderful!

Please excuse the quality of the photos, I forgot to bring my real camera and had to use my camera phone. Also, these are all the test frames that people can try, so if they are a bit crooked or something like that, the optician can make adjustments to a certain extent.

So, here's the first pair, by Aliki(?). The shape of these is good:

But the color is just "meh." So if I chose these, I'd get them in this color, olive rims with white:

The next pair is by Chanel. I like the shape of these a lot, but I'm thinking the pink rims and temple detailing is a bit too cutesy for me:

Thanks for any feedback, everyone! Oh, don't hesitate to be honest--I'd hate to walk around with ugly glasses on all day, hee hee.

What a nice selection of glasses! You look fine in all of them, but my favs are the funky scrolly ones and the Chanel ones directly below them.

I love the red ones, too. But I'm the type of person that would get frustrated if the glasses didn't work with an outfit and I'd fear that the red would have the possibility. Then again, I can only really think of pink as possibly being a problem and that could be made to work. Oh, and maybe purple. Red and purple have been hijacked by that red hat group! So perhaps that's not really an issue. Regardless, I think the Aliki ones are great because they are kicky while also being versatile.

I like the olive with white, or or the black Chanel. Both are classic and the shape is great for you.

I really like #2 (first Chanel) and #3 (funky scrolly). They all look great on you, I just prefer when there isn't much going on on the arms. Very sleek sunglasses!

I vote for the red Chanel because they follow the line of your eyebrow and flatter your face. The second best one in my opinion is the Chanel with the pink and cutesy details. I don't think the details look like you but the shape of the glasses is great. The Chanel with the quilted temples is my favorite pair of glasses but it's shape is too harsh for you. My 2cents.

You wear glasses well so it was a difficult decision, but I think I like the Chanel that you said is pink with a cutsey arm. I can't see the pink on my monitor, but I love the shape of the frame and arm. It doesn't look too cutsey here.
I thought all of them would work for you, except the very first picture the frames seemed too heavy, and you said that you would get them in the olive, which was much better on you.

How fun. Thanks for sharing the pics with us. My vote goes toward the first Chanel pair (though I get your concern about the "cutesy" temple details; but the shape is real good), or the red pair (my favorite, but I'm very partial to red glasses :-)) I think a couple of the other frames are too big/heavy for your face, including the first one.

Fabulous Ana! Welcome to the INCREDIBLE world of killer specs. Thank you for doing me “the pearl honour”. You won’t believe that I have my eye on a bit of rhinestone eye candy myself (Antje has seen them and loved them).

Here’s my 2 specs cents:

o My favorite is hands down the red Chanel pair. The shape is strong but soft. Very flattering. Perfect on your brow line. But I am unsure that they should be your only pair. Can you commit to red frames?
o I like the Chanel frames with the cutesy detail next but I’m not into the cutesy detail either.
o The scroll looks good but not what I would call your style. It’s not clean enough. ( Does that make sense?)
o The other frames seem heavy for your fine features.

Angie, the concerns you brought up were the exact ones Brendan did when he saw my photos (he's a specs expert, too).

I really only need and can warrant buying one pair of glasses for now, because I don't actually have to wear specs all day every day. I don't even have a lens restriction on my driver's license. I mainly need them when I'm reading or sitting in the middle/back of one of the giant lecture halls at school, because I end up squinting a lot to see clearly. When school starts, I guess this will be an everyday thing, but I'm not totally blind without specs, they just make things a bit easier.

As to the frames, the red Chanels were definitely my favorite (the white flower is *so* adorable), with the first pair in olive and white a close second. I was also concerned about the red color, because I know you should pick a frame and color that is flattering without giving any thought to clothing, but if I'm wearing an orange tweed blazer, or cream, brown and coral, are red specs really going to clash? Also, I really like my red lipstick and wear that everyday now. Is that a lot of red on my face? I guess the upside is that I can wear them during class, and then take them off when I leave class, but there will probably be days where I want to just keep them on all day. The red Chanels did come in black with champaign and gold arms, which I tried first, but I felt like they were smaller or something and maybe they made my eyes look beady?

Do you think I can do black frames, or are they just too heavy? I'd really rather avoid wire frames, because I've had those in the past, and they just are not that exciting to me.

Hmm. You have brought up good points. (And I like the way Brendan thinks!)

I think black frames are heavy and hard for you. How about black and white frames, but easy on the white? The black Chanel is not nearly as nice. You’re right.

Suggestion: Go back and wear colourful clothing with red lipstick and try on the red specs again. What do you think of that idea?

I don't like the black Chanels as much for some reason. I think Angie is right, the color is too heavy. I like her idea of trying them on again. Picking out glasses is such a chore

I actually liked you in the black frames, Ana. I love the Chanel pairs the best. I really like the one with the cream quilted arms.
What glasses shop is this? I was not too pleased with the one I used. I'm starting to think I need to get a funky pair and wear glasses vs. contacts once in awhile.

They have a location at the Arboretum, which is the one I went to yesterday, but I think their central location at 35th and Jefferson has a larger selection. I want to go to that one and check out what they have there. Maybe tomorrow? Want to come with me? If you want, then you can check out and try on what they have, but not feel under a lot of pressure to buy, because you can be there officially "for moral support."

Ana, you look good in all of the glasses! I like the two Chanel ones best too although if it was me I don't think I could commit to red glasses. They still look great. Maybe the store downtown will have more options.
