Where I live, “master stylists” can charge much more than other stylists in the same salon. It’s based on experience. In my opinion, though, you can still get the same haircut from a more junior stylist...and sometimes better. They often try harder to please the client.

My hairstylist has been ill or away on family emergencies a few times this year, and I’ve been so pleased with a junior stylist who subbed in that I almost switched. (Too much of a coward really, though!)

I live in a rural area and spend about $100 for a cut and color every 6-8 weeks. I'm feeling pretty spoiled after reading what some of you are paying!

Haircuts (wash/cut/blow dry) in the Big City (Toronto) seemed to be around $80. Now that I am retired and travel to the big city infrequently, I've sourced someone local and it is $40. And seems consistent with other salons in the area. DH is charged $18. for no shampoo and scissors-over-comb top and clippered sides.

If you have a simple style and easy hair, then it may not matter if you have an experienced stylist or not. I never understood $300. trims for bob style hairdos, however if you have a tricky cut or difficult hair, and a stylist who 'gets' you, it may be worth the expense.

runcarla, there is nothing complicated about my cut and that is why I feel $100 is way too much. It is amazing how expensive the area I live in has become. (We live in one of the top school districts in PA) Almost 30 years ago homes were affordable here and now there are multi million homes going in and homes that were once purchased for $50,000 and less and going for over 1/2 million. Luckily, our taxes are not too bad, but DH and I realize that we are not staying here too long after retirement.
