Eeeek - a dress: HELP!!

Ok, I can't remember the last time I wore a dress. It was likely my wedding (that was many many many moons ago)...maybe...oh dear, that might actually be right. Anyway, I tried this on tonight & picked it up.

Reasons to Keep: Color will go with EVERYTHING I have!, Price - $59 on sale, I don't have any dresses, What else will I wear for Easter, I think I really really like it, Goes great with my pewter/gold Donald Pliner sandals, DH said keep,

Reasons to Return: Color is very light, can I keep it clean?, Shouldn't just buy it cause it's on sale, I don't wear dresses, I can very likely find something else to wear for Easter, I can't wear it to the wedding I have the following weekend cause it's cream, hmmm I was still undecided on the pewter/gold sandals.

JG, as a complete non-expert, I like it better on you than on the model! It looks like your skin tone works with the ivory color. From your pictures it looks like it fits you well, and I like it a lot with the green ruffled cardigan and the scarf. I'm not as crazy about it with the pink blazer - maybe it's the length of the blazer or the fact that both the blazer and the dress have a very straight/square hem.

Since you can't wear it to the wedding you have the following weekend, are there any occasions you are getting the dress for (besides Easter?)

Kari, thanks I really like the color too. I just worry about it for other reasons. Also, does it make me look bigger than I am as I'm not used to wearing cream on the bottom 1/2 (especially in a skirt or dress). Yes, that's what it was with the pink also. I love the color with it & the fit of the jacket, just couldn't put my finger on what seemed off.

Other than being drawn to a fun little versatile casual (this is a lined cotton) dress that I could wear for summer & mix/match with things no other reasons I have to get a dress (that I can think of right now) other than the 2 mentioned above.

I thought about it in the green also (funny thing is I tried it on a month or so ago & keep looking at it also). I thought that could be more casual for me, wouldn't have to worry about color as much, it just wouldn't be as versatile. Felt like a pattern on my tush though with the little white/cream dots though. Maybe I should give it a whirl again & rethink? I believe it's the exact same one on the link just the different color. I do wear a lot of green. Could do white, cream, black, denim, dark green maybe with it....The green would work for the wedding & Easter. I would just have to order it on-line though...

JG, the dress fits you like a dream! i love it with the cardigan and with the scarf, but as kari said, not so much with the pink blazer - i think it overwhelms you. if you were going to do a blazer with this dress i'd go for something more cropped and fitted... does that make sense? but do keep the dress, it'll make a really versatile piece for summer!

I think the great fits you perfectly and does not make you look bigger at all. It's fabulous.

And I also say no to the pink blazer with it. Although perhaps if you belted the blazer it would be better, but the blazer itself is too long I think for the dress.

I do like the dress on you and agree that it looks better on you than it does on the model.
How difficult would it be for you to go back and try on the floral dress for comparison? I like the one you have, but it sounds like you aren't in love with it. Even if you don't end up exchanging the dress you have, you might want something to compare it to just to solidify your decision.
It looks like your sandals would go with either dress, fwiw.

I think the dress looks nice, it's a tad bit short for my preference. That's something I've learned from ylf. Knee length is more universally flattering. Disclaimer - I still have some this length. I really like the other dress you posted. I think it's worth a try.

Oooh, I tried that one on the other day. You look about 1000 times better than I did! LOL. I love the cream.

The cardigan and/or scarf looks are fab, the blazer less so. I think the blazer actually looks too rumpled/casual next to the crispness of the cream shift.

I think the dress looks great - very flattering and versatile, and I think you can wear it to the wedding, too, if you add another color. But I am afraid it might be a bit too short. How tall are you? I remember Angie saying that you can get away with shorter length if you're a petite. I also like it with cardi and scarf, but not with the blazer - the blazer seems a bit too big?
I also like the other dress you linked to, and it looks like it's longer, but it's very different since it's floral.

The dress looks so much better on you than on the model. I like how you can change it so many ways with accessories. It is not very exciting on it's own but it is a chamileon with accessories.

I agree with the others; the dress looks great, and the ivory really works with your skintone. I also adore the combination with the green cardi!

Thanks ladies, appreciate the feedback. If I'm reading this right 2 out of 11 of you're comments think length might be too short. DH says not too short (of course he's no expert LOL)

I did go back tonight (I think I have a love/hate relationship with shopping right now) & tried on entirely TOO MANY dresses & skirts to count!! I came home with a big fat NOTHING!! Ugh...this is so hard to adjust to. I know the end result (working wardrobe) will be so much better. It's just so frustrating finding the perfect things. It's worth it - don't get me wrong! Anyway, The floral one is too flimsy girly for me. It was adorable - if any of you like girly dresses definitely try it. GORGEOUS on, I'm just not used to the fullness & lightweight material + the pattern. There's a black one with muted bright florals - that & the navy one with muted white florals were gorgeous also! Oh, and the navy one with green roses all over on the print. They are just not me...

I'm trying the cream on again later tonight with DH & will make the final decision later this week. The problem is I think I really am loving it because it's so versatile & it feels so good on!! Decisions Decisions....Gheez - you'd think it was a car or something...

I do have an update though - decided to KEEP! Took it to the tailor today, he can let out 3/4-1" on the hem & will have it done by Friday! The new tailor I found is superb - I've been using him for a few months now but quite a bit more recently.

I tried it on for a couple of friends also & they said keep. So, this will be my first experience with a dress I can wear for day-to-day in quite sometime...

I do think the Donald Pliner sandals are getting returned to Zappo's though. Can't justify wearing them enough considering all the other shoe shopping I've done recently.

JG, just curious, when you were in ATL, did you try on the ponte knit sheath dress - this one:

They have it in salmon, green, black. I tried the black on at the store awhile ago, and can't get my mind off of it.

I'm asking because I'm curious about your comparison:

1) Length of ponte knit vs AT cream sheath

2) Fit in the hips

I usually find that my hips don't fill out AT dresses, whereas the ATL sheath fit me like a dream. Absolute perfection. I was just on the fence about the material (too hot?) and the color choices.

The ponte knit went all the way to my knee - but I can't remember now whether I tried it on in petite or regular.

Anyway, if you tried it on, can you give me your observations? I would be very grateful! Thanks!

Did you say you don't own dresses? You look great in them!! It doesn't look too short to me, but you know what makes you most comfortable.

The color, style and the way you styled up this dress shows just how creative you are with such a simple nueutral dress...you make it look amazing...get more dresses!!!

Shiny, I think you're asking about the "Sleeveless Scoopneck Sheath Dress you linked a picture too. It just shows the teal color on line.

If so, yes I did try it on in the store - it was in the salmon color at my store. I didn't even realize it came in the teal. However, I thought the fit was a little different than the Cream one I got & the Teal one here. Here's what I thought:

LENGTH - Teal/Salmon one was longer on me. The site shows 35 1/2" vs. 35 3/8" I think they said but the salmon one seemed longer. It might have been because of the cut. I was of course trying on regular sizes (not petite).

SKIRT CUT - I don't know if I'm using the right terms or not (dress stuff is new to me) but the Teal/Salmon one seemed to be a bit more like an A-line; however, the Cream one seemed straighter to me. It could be because of the fit in the hips.

HIPS - Teal/Salmon one felt fuller through the hips than the Cream one on me. This is usually a snug area for me on about any dress though.

NECKLINE - Teal/Salmon is obviously a higher neck.

MATERIAL - Both seemed about the same material. Heavier/structured but not weight/wintery heavy if you know what I mean.

I hope that helps! Let me know what you decide on. I tried on a few others as well if there's something else I can help you with.

Hmmm... guess I need to get up to AT and try on the cream sheath.

Did you try on other sheaths? I am looking for one. I do want the longer length though - I have a few black sheaths in shorter lengths already. Black might be okay but I'm craving something in a versatile, flattering color. A charcoal grey or flattering red would be ideal. Wasn't really thrilled with the other ATL colors. Neckline can't be too high and straight across, if you know what I mean, because of the chest. But modest-ish. For work or other conservative occasions. BR sheaths - look great but none of them ever fit me right. Lemme know what you have found if you have been trying on!

Oh Shiny, here’s what I tried on & almost bought that fit similar to the Cream one. I just had my heart set on cream otherwise these would have done the trick.

I think it was just a hair fuller through the bust also. OH MY GOSH, one of my girlfriends JUST called me & picked this one up – Too Funny!

The rose pin on the waist is fun because it’s detachable & might be fun on something else as well. I envisoned with boots & a cardi over in the winter, etc.

I'm definitely going to have to get over to ATL soon! I don't think #1 would work for me - pattern too large for my size. #3 is sweet - but I have something similar already. I'm mostly look for a solid color, I think.... and truth is I might not be looking for one at all, if that black one at ATL didn't fit so well... grrr. Maybe I will find it on major sale.

I'm so glad you bought the cream dress afterall! You should wear dresses and enjoy them - you look great in them!

Shiny, I was also at BR last night & they had this GORGEOUS knit dress (short cap sleeve I think, deeper neckline) & maybe A-line longer cut. It was in the store so I don't know if they have on-line. But, it was solid color & gorgeous! They had it in black & a really really deep purple. They just had tiny sizes at my BR - didn't help me but might be perfect for you. I don't know if they had on-line or not.

Thank you for the vote of confidence! I'll give it a whirl & see what I think. I did wear them for awhile - long ago before we were married. Then, after married life I wore suits to work for quite sometime (never dresses though for some reason). Then, just got out of the habit I guess & started cringing anytime I had to think about them. I think I'm starting to get more comfortable with the idea.

If there's one you are thinking about - call your ATL & have them hold it for you. They are going FAST in the store by me. Some from Monday night at closing were gone by Tue at 6pm already...

I also tried on #1 and #3, and LOVED them both. But I was between sizes for both so decided to wait before buying them.

Shiny, you should try the ATL cream sheath. I tried that one too, but didn't look half as good as JG!
