Dry cut

I just remembered that I also had a hair question today, in addition to the bag question. Could someone explain what is dry cutting, what are the advantages and how the results are different? Is it better for a specific style or type of hair?
Thank you!

Hi Marianne,

Good question, and really not too complicated.

Dry cutting gives a stylist a better visual on the finished look, you can see how your shaping looks as you go...It doesn't work* better * on one hair type (curly or straight) I use this on both (I only dry cut my stick straight hair)

Most clients who have alot of inconsistencies in how their hair dries is the *crucial* element here, and determines weather I will dry cut or not.

Simply put...if your hair tends to shrink a TON, or due to cowlicks etc. it dries uneven...even if it is cut perfectly even...dry cutting is in order.

Some other factors involved, but you get the idea:)

Some stylists have turned this into a bit of a gimmick by specializing in dry cuts only...don't buy into it...both wet and dry cuts have their place:)

I just had my hair cut dry this last time around. New stylist. Name is Taylor too! I loved it! I have straight thick hair. She says I have a lot of cowlicks which I didn't know about. I think this last cut has been the only cut I haven't gone home and fixed in some way. Maybe she cut it this way because the cut I was getting was a sort of bowl cut so it lays straight down and would be very noticeable if it dried uneven.

Thank you for the explanation, Taylor! Can I say how great it is to be able to ask a professional? In my search for a new stylist I came across one who specializes in it, and I was wondering if I should give it a try.

I just had my hair 'dry-cut' last month too - stick straight hair, but had lots of issues with the way it would dry. My bangs just wouldn't sit right. So, this time - the stylist asked me, "Would you like to try a dry cut?" and explained that it might work better to work on my hair as it really is, than when it's all wet. He's done both, and I think I'm happier with the bangs with the dry-cut than the usual wet-hair deal.

My hair looks a lot better after the dry-cut, than with previous cuts.

A word of warning. I used to get my hair dry cut, but they would flat iron it before doing it. Which I think defeats the purpose.

I've had a dry cut, earlier this year when I went to Devachan in NYC. They're a salon which specializes in curly hair, and do 80% of your cut dry, before they wash it. After you're washed and dried, they touch it up some more.

I'm intrigued that some ladies with very straight hair have had this done- I always thought it made more sense for curly hair, which "shrinks" as it dries.
