I set out to DressBarn today to see if I coud score a dress for my neices wedding that is right after Christmas. It is an evening wedding, so I wanted something mildly formal plus being a family wedding, color was a big factor, as there will be lots of family photos and so I wanted to stay away from black.

I purchased this dress, and spotted the necklace while standing in line to pay. What do you all think of the dress? I tried on a smaller size in another color, which was a better fit, so they are looking to see if they can locate the purple in a 6 for me from another store. otherwise, I could have it taken in a tad (it does look a bit big especially from the back)

and if the dress meets your approval, here is a close up of the necklace. Does it work or should I look for something fancier? The picture doesn't show it well, but the beads pick up the purple from the dress, which was why I bought it.

and of course shoes..... these black shoes won't do.... what color and style shoes would you suggest. I was thinking of a silver/pewterish d'orsay pump.

Help me out ladies, we only have family weddings come around every few years and I want to look really nice.

I LOVE the dress Queenie and agree it will look fab sized down. I particularly like the tuxedo styling. I will have a look at some shoe suggestions tomorrow and post back. Do you need a topper?

I also love the dress if sized down. From what I can see of the necklace, it's a lovely piece and fits in the neckline well, but is it too casual for that dress? You might hang onto it, but keep looking for something similar but dressier.
How about silver / pewter metallic shoes or red?

Oh lovely! I agree with sizing down a size- it's a nice color for you. I think pewter/silver d'orsay pumps would be great. I love that necklace and think you should keep it for other things, but would do a pearl choker type with this dress.

I *love* this dress you've got happening. I'm no expert on these matters, but have to say this is a beautiful colour on you.

For some strange reason (and please take my opinions with a grain of salt since I'm not expert at all), I'd be inclined to go with warmer colours to accessorize this beautiful deep purple. I love the necklace you have picked out, I think it's really pretty - but in terms of shoes - yeah, I'd be looking at a warmer colour in terms of shoes/clutch. Like matte gold or copper even.

I love the dress (do get smaller size) and I love the necklace, I think it works perfectly with a v-neck dress. Shoes - maybe something with wider straps, I like Joy idea of metallic or red, have fun!

I also think you could wear black opaques and a closed toe black heel if you are prone to feeling the cold.

thanks ladies for the encouragement on the dress. the salesgirl and I both thought it was a great dress on me, but when I put it on for my husband, the first thing he said... "oh... purple..?" He claims it was just because he was expecting to see red....anyhow, it just wasn't the reaction I was hoping for.

I hadn't thought of red shoes- I'll have to put those in my radar as well when I go looking for shoes. And gold or copper might be an interesting look as well. Lots to choose from. I just feel that black is too harsh roseandjoan...

Jessica, chewy, and R&J all of those are really pretty necklaces. I know I need to try a variety, but my initial thinking is that they might be a bit top heavy. Marianna, pearls were my first thought, but I picked that necklace up and something about the colors grabbed my attention. I will go find some pearls though to try as well. Am I right in thinking that whatever neckace I wear it needs to not fall below the neckline of the dress?

cold factor-- the wedding and reception are both in the same venue, so we will be inside the whole time, and it's in southern california where *typically* the temps don't plummet. but we are having an unseasonally cold month in CA, so who knows... would it be terribly hokey to just wear my nice coat to get myself in the door and back home? It's not a fancy silk coat, but it's not a puffer either. I will keep my eye out for a pretty wrap to have just in case it is chilly at all inside.
