Another boot question I've been wondering..

What are the pros and cons of various boot finishes or types? (patent, suede, flat leather). I think your not suppossed to get the suede wet? Can the others withstand a bit of snow and water? (I won't be building a snowman in them or anything!)
Also are there different things that must be done to care for each type?
