I hate that bulky look. If there is one thing that kills a look on me, it is too much non drapy bulk on the rib cage. I layer some pieces with silk tops if I want that shirt tail look (I did a mint green silk sleeveless with my dark blue flower print sweater last weekend so that there would be a different color between the sweater welt and my navy blue pants) or sometimes a long cami. I don't feel the collar is needed. FWIW Everlane has sleeveless, collared silk shirts in about 5-6 colors for fall.

Yeah MsMary! Us "Short-Necks" (not to be confused with "Red-Necks") have got to stick together!

Remember "dickies?" (What an awful name!) Well, Una - your idea is like a Reverse Dickie! Again - I say - BRILLIANT!

Hmm, looks like Team Short-Neck and Team "Authentically Fake" are fans. I am about to have my week off, and you know I learn the hard way, so I will be dusting off the sewing machine and paying Value Village a visit.

I'm going with "it looks stupid." I have to add, however, that many time new looks have seemed like dumb ideas to me, and then six months later I adopt them.

I used to wear shirts under pullovers, and then one day I didn't like it anymore.

I prefer the look with the collar, but then I am preppy at heart And I have a long neck and sloping shoulders, so collars are kind to me.

Still, if you have the pieces, you could give it a shot. Or try on the J Crew piece and see how it looks on.

I just tried this silk tank (very long) underneath a knit top of mine (the tank is super thin), and it looked and felt great.

I think this is a great idea for us short neckers. I like Janine's idea of the long silk tank...mostly because I avoid sewing. Can't wait to see how it turns out!

I think my neck is on the short side and I don't like lumpiness or anything uncomfortable.

But....I think the JCrew sweater is goofy. If it's meant to look like a shirt, then where the heck is the collar?

Because I am a gigantic over-thinker, it reminds me of way back in the day when (men's) collars were separate from shirts. So it's like you just threw on an old shirt with a sweater over it and didn't bother with the collar.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it...

I must be team long neck here, and I think it looks ridiculous for people like me but if I had a short neck, I'm sure my thinking might be different.

Well, they do sell sweater tops like that - with collar. I don't see why not, except that it's work...

Personally, I kind of like it! I think it's a cool way to get the look you want without the negative aspects. Can't wait to see how it turns out if you do it!

So I notice the j. crew version does not have buttons. What if it did?

Honestly the bunching of a collar and crewneck around my short fat neck is what keeps me from wearing this look! But I can see how the integrity of the look may be compromised by not having a collar.

I have a short neck and don't ever wear my shirts buttoned up all the way but I still prefer this look with a collar. For me, the sweater needs to be a v neck so I can leave the top button of the shirt open. But I also don't own any crisp shirts, only softer ones like silk or soft cotton.
