Breaking up with former fashion loves

I have realized that patent leather and ruffles are over for me. Ah, I loved them so much at the time, but now ... well, let's just say I may have overdone it, and it's time to say good-bye. Boo hoo! But on to my next love, whatever that might be!

Have you ever been absolutely in love with a fashion item, or trend, and realized you had to end the affair?

Fab thread, Laura. The title cracks me up.

I’ve officially broken up with ruffles too, although I’m still open to flirting. I still love patent but am very into matte leather at the moment.

I'm starting a relationship with purple.

It is really a great thread Laura!

I have also decided to stop buying ruffled items, especially since I have quite a few new ones in my closet. And I was obsessed with patent leather last year. I still like and wear it this year, but I like the matte leather better.

Angie, welcome to my purple world ! :) It is my favorite color!

Hmm, there is nothing I have really broken up with, as in "I will never wear it again", but there are a lot of things like " I am not buying any more of x - but I will still wear whatever x I have in my closet". For example: flower patterns, swing jackets.

New relationship: day dresses for the colder weather, especially if worn with slouchy boots.

LOL! I've wanted ruffles to cover my boney chest but have not bought any yet. The right piece hasn't found it's way into my closet, mostly because I'm too practical. I want the ruffles but don't want to iron them. Maybe it's too late!?
I've loved chocolate brown but it doesn't hold the same thrill it once did. Now my eyes glaze over when I'm holding a silvery grey piece. Even charcoal makes the heart race.

This is interesting and really made me think. I used to wear a lot of fashion sneakers pre-YLF, specifically the Puma Mostro. Not sure why I loved that shoe so much, but I was sort of obsessed. I've totally broken up with that love affair now and haven't worn those shoes in a LONG time.

I also used to wear a ton of black, specifically ONLY black tops. I've ended that unhealthy relationship as well and have started a love affair with color!

Also new to my wardrobe are leather jackets and I am enjoying them *so* much. That's my newest fling. ;)

I'm with Joy - still wanting ruffles for my small bust! There are so many great neckline/top of bodice options around at the moment for the less endowed.

Hmm I never was really into ruffles, but the abundance of them is making me lose interest.
Patent leather and big bags are the things that I am getting lukewarm about... I will still use mine, but will not buy any in the near future.
Speaking of brown, I used to wear it quite a bit, and phased it out since finding YLF... and beige and khaki.

Laura, you're funny--great title! :)

I've had a long-time relationship (obsession?) with all things long and flowy -- skirts, dresses, jackets, cardis, pants. But no more -- they overwhelm my frame and in some cases look matronly on me! I've cleared my closet of most of these pieces, but a few are still lurking, reluctant make a clean break-up.

Fun read :0)

I am also dating gold – for the first time in my life!

I reluctantly had to break up my long term relationship with plaid, after moving to Scotland I felt like I was wearing their national costume, it was a very difficult break up and one filled with regret.

Subtle ruffles have been a huge part of my style and I find myself slightly annoyed they have become so fashionable. I think we may have to break up then make up next season.

I'm now flirting with the mod look, not sure this relationship will go the distance, but we will have fun while it lasts.

This thread topic cracks me up, and I love reading the responses!

I think about the only thing I've truly broken up with are delicate necklaces. I used to be really into them, but I've gradually noticed that bolder, larger, and chunkier necklaces look better with my frame, and I'm more comfortable making a statement than I was a year ago.

I think Joy and I are on the same color wavelength. I am crushing hard on all things gray and pewter, and am dabbling in purple/mauve/pink more than I have since I was five! A year and a half ago I adored any dark or chocolatey browns, but we've pretty much cooled off.

I am perpetually in love with silk scarves, sleek boots, and sheath dresses, and I'm kind of rekindling a love for blazers. I'm not as into cardigans right now as I was last autumn, slthough if I ever find a boyfriend cardigan that loves me back, I might make a little room in my closet.

Patent leather? Who could break up with patent leather?? I did notice there aren't as many patent options in handbags this year - I'm seeing more pebbled leather, which I don't care for as much.

Ruffles: after Project Runway last night, when Heidi and the others tore into ruffles - "they're used to disguise flaws" "they're unwearable" etc.... well, that was tough. But I actually got bored with ruffles months ago. And now I'm back in love with them again.

I fear I will look back on my skinny jean phase and cringe someday. But it sure is a fun affair right now.

Cool thread.

I broke up with black purses since April, haven't carried one since then. I think I will do this every year in the warmer months and go back into them in the fall and winter.

NO MORE FAT GIRL SHIRTS! You know the ones, that are gathered at the bust or waist and then billow out to hide the hips and tummy? I've worn them for too long and now that I'm 36lbs lighter I'm looking for sleeker tops!

I am sooooo over bell bottoms, I don't know why but I can't stand them at the moment. I'm sure my love for them will come back but right now I'm concentrating on straight leg pants and hoping to lose enough weight to fit into skinnies.

I had to break off a lifelong love affair with silver last year. I'm slowly letting select pieces back in (like the pewter loafers that I ordered), but gold is my standing date now. I broke up with black long ago- after wearing almost nothing but black for years. That's another one that I am willing to court with select pieces again.

I was a lifelong black shoe and bag lover. Recently i've broken up with both and will only buy if the are textured or have some interest in them x

Oh, you guys have me laughing!!

I am crushing on oxford shoes, but am afraid to take the plunge. Given our climate, they have a short period of wearability before boots weather sets in, and I am concerned I will get burned and the fling will be very brief indeed.

But boots. Ah, boots. Now they are a lifelong love!

Funny post, Laura! I am also trying to end my love affair with black. I must have a gazillion black tops. I was out shopping yesterday and I literally had to force myself to put one back (and it was so cute and on super sale!).

I was a little late to the ruffle trend and it took me awhile to figure out how to work ruffles with my body type so I have not really OD'd on the trend just yet and I only have a few ruffled pieces anyway.

Lately I have been attracted to more delicate necklaces again after a couple of years of wearing only "statement" necklaces.

Due to problems with my feet, I have had to give up most of my heels or wear them sparingly :(

I love this thread - thanks for starting it! I think I've cooled off a bit on white blouses. I know they look great on my skin tone but I tend to choose color over white more often when I'm standing in my closet. I know it will always be there but just a little dormant right now.

Hmm,
I am getting over all jeans having to be dark wash and am flirting with mildly distressed types, more interest and value contrast with all the dark of winter. I am cooling off my brief but memorable affair with brighter color and proudly embracing my old standby, lovable earth tones. I still cheat with bright color in small batches. I never cared much for patent so continue relationships with matte leather. I am very over flower pins and only wore one once (enough for me). I am very sad about motojackets, there is not one anywhere that has tempted me enough. Maybe when they are out of style the right one will appear.

After a long love affair with black, we broke up for awhile last year and I added lots of color...but I am back together with black again...I think we will stay together forever...with more color added.

I have broken up with grey and brown forever and anything muted.

I am interested in rich dark charcoal silks, and dark ink blue silks.. I bought a couple pieces and they seem to like me too :)

Had my heart broken recently by skirts. I CAN wear to work but not very practical and no one else ever does. Pants are better for ladder climbing, etc.
So the skirts in my closet are banished to the back and I have to really get into wearing on days off or else they will be done for.

Flirting with flats - that's all I look at these days!

Still madly in love with patent - it is a lifelong committment I think lol.

For now, short skirts and I are on a break. We used to be madly in love, but now I'm getting a bit long in the tooth. Shirts with collars and I are taking a hiatus. Dark lipstick and I might have split for good... although I know that a girl should never say never.

I still love ruffles, but we're taking a break right now. Only time will tell if things were meant to be. I'll still wear the ruffle items I have though.

I've stared flirting with shorter skirts, and have been actively advertising for a motorcycle jacket. There have been a couple of dates, but none of them panned out. :-/

This thread is so funny. I'm not sure, but I *may* have broken up with full, pleated, 50's-style skirts. I've always loved the look but realized the other day that I didn't trot it out once this summer. Too soon to tell if we're really over or just on a break, though ;)

When it comes to the jewelry I've worn for years, the spark is gone. I unceremoniously dumped most of my small, delicate necklaces once pearls entered my life, and I'm on a bit of a hiatus with my earrings. I'm just not that into them. :)
I'm also starting to feel there might be something between me and slimmer-cut pants, though we're still in the getting to know each other phase.
I'm willing to fully get it on with nice, flattering boots once the right pair comes along. :) More on that later, girls!

I think this summer I may have finally broken up with shorter shorts. We were still on at the beginning of the season. Then, off & on. It was a bit of a slow break-up. Not short short mind you, but anything more than a couple of inches above the knee is turning into my preference. I picked up some great one's at AT & ATL this summer that I loved. The jury is still out on ther shorter one's. I should know by next summer whether I'm going to have a few one night stands with them or not...LOL!! :)

For Fall/Winter - I think I've successfully ditched the loose tops/jackets. I'm enjoying much more fitted styles that like to snuggle up wiith me a bit more now.

I'm breaking up with color brown, black and all the boring shades - I used these colors in my wardrobe way too much in the past!

Posted 1 month ago

(I have to say that some of these break ups are MUSIC TO MY EARS. There are better relationships out there for you).

Posted 1 month ago

Umm, I think that a bit of a sl*t ;)

I seem to have started quite a few new flings lately as well as carrying on with older affairs.

I am wearing a lot less black than I used to, but it is always there at the back of the wardrobe like a faithful friend...

I did rediscover a dark plum colour lipstick last night...
