Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Best ways to wear certain new purchases?

I know, I know, I haven't put up the pictures from yesterday's shopping spree yet, but those are coming tonight. IN the meantime, though, I have a couple of more general questions that will dictate what I do with some of the new purchases.

One question has to do with the tweed jacket I bought:

Because the collar is so broad, should I avoid collared shirts under it? For instance, I was thinking of pairing this with black pants and a fuchsia button-down (with pearls), but would that be too much activity around the neck? If button-downs are out, what's best?

Pencil skirt: I finally found one that I'm confident you'll approve. It's charcoal grey and falls straight to my knee. As usual, though, I have a conundrum when it comes to top-lengths. I know you're supposed to wear shirts that stop at the hip-bone. Does the same rule apply to jackets? I always figured slightly longer jackets were ok with skirts, mostly because I know people often purchase suits that include both a skirt and pants to go with the same jacket. Would a shorter top layered under a longer jacket be effective over a pencil skirt, or should I just stick to the more cropped length?

The results of this discussion will be implemented in tonight's picture-taking session. :)

I would love to see the jacket worn with either a scoop neck or polo neck top. If wearing your scoop neck I would definitely add your pearls.

With regards to the skirt and jacket question, I have not got a scooby so will look forward to other peoples responses.

Michelle, I think you can wear a button-down under that jacket. I do, and I keep the button-down collar under the jacket collar (rather than over), so it doesn't look busy around the neckline. I wouldn't say I'm expert on this, though, maybe I'm doing it wrong. :-)

I wear all sorts of collars with my jackets and I do think you can wear a button-down collar with that jacket! I think it would look quite smart and draw attention to your gorgeous face!

I am totally inept when it comes to skirts so I can't help you there!

Julie’s scooby cracks me up.

Course you can wear a button down under that jacket! Knits will work too.

Skirts look good with shorter jackets – flop proof if you are hourglass-y. However baggy BF blazers are being worn with tiny skirts and dresses as a salute to the 80’s, but often with a waist cinching belt.

I'm sorry Michelle, Scooby is cockney rhyming slang, Scooby Doo = clue!
