Armwarmers?

Loulou's posts about legwarmers reminded me that I secretly love armwarmers and wonder if I could wear them. Here are a few examples I found in a quick search:

I've got several pair of these that I have knit or made from sleeves of thrifted sweaters. I'm curious to hear about the fashion factor.

Wow, those would be great for my frigid office! Gloves would mess with typing, but those would help keep my hands and forearms a bit warmer. Hm.

Ooh! When we were in Iceland, we brought back wool leg warmers for DD16 for xmas, and wool arm warmers for DD15. The arm warmer was particularly cool... it was like a shirt, sort of.. but without a front? Hard to describe - kinda like wearing a shawl, with arms?

She rocks this look. She runs hot, and her school runs hot too... so she is apt to wear tank tops to school in the winter. She puts these over a tank top, so a bit of shoulder skin was showing.

I don't know about the age thing!

They sure seem like a good way to add color and they seem fun, just like your style is. I like arm and leg warmers because they are functional and colorful, or interesting and textural.
Do you have a 3/4 arm length jacket? It would be cute to show off the arm warmers.

Shiny, I bet your daughter looks great with arm warmers. I worry it's more of a teenage look, though.

Sandy, great idea! The corduroy Halogen jacket from Nordstrom has 3/4 sleeves. I'll have to try that.

Medusa, I really like the look when there is no skin on show between the sleeve and the start of the arm warmer. I feel that solid colours may make the look age appropriate. Definitely an interesting look.

Shiny, this would not work with a tank but has DD tried cutting the feet of opaque tights to create the same effect as her arm warmers. I remember seeing Daisy Lowe use this technique on TV last year.

I live in a frigid winter climate and I am seriously thinking about arm warmers and opera-length cashmere gloves. . .The polka dots and stripes do look young, but the chevron is neutral enough that it would work nicely with a 3/4 sleeve jacket or a coat with bracelet sleeves. If I remember right, doesn't Sock Dreams have plainer warmers too? Warmth, a fun factor, and a more sophisticated look (as sophisticated as you can get in cold weather, anyway).

I will try to take a pic of DD and her armwarmers. I actually think hers *could* work for someone more (cough cough) mature. But the devil is probably in the details!

I love armwarmers! I had a pair in university that was multi-coloured, made of vintage cachmere sweaters sewn into wide bands of colour. Sounds hideous when I describe it like that, I know- but they were nice, I promise!

Ele, the preice on the wrist warmers made me stop and take a second look. This is really worth taking up knitting.
Shiny, your daughter is ADORABLE! She cracks me up in her Turbi-Twist!
I like the arm warmers on her. They're just funky enough for a teen, but still nice looking. You have a good eye for choosing gifts. Lucky daughters.

Oh San, I completely agree. I'm far too practical to actually buy them for that price- I'm just a sucker for the pretty muted colours and the nice branding/packaging!

Khris, good suggestion about knitting. I'm not great at knitting, but maybe I could handle this.

I had never even heard of armwarmers before but I find this look quite appealing and functional given the continuing fashion of short sleeves in otherwise warm knits.

Oh! I think there is absolutely a way of keeping this look sophisticated. That is what will keep it age appropriate. (Sorry to bring the sensitive issue of age in, but it’s a very real thing unfortunately). It goes the same for legwarmers and I would totally wear them VERY monochromatically and in a tailored way. Just like Vera Wang would :0)

It looks like some of those are just the sleeves cut off from a top. That would be a good project to scout the thrift stores for. I started knitting a pair in a denim blue to wear with my denim jacket.

Hmmm. I'm going to try to think like Vera Wang on this - I think I could see Vera wearing the thumbhole warmers from Cciele's last link.

Also - does anyone else here watch the new TV show Glee? (If you haven't you should try watching it, it's hilarious, I've become obsessed.) On this week's episode the character Tina wore arm warmers and looked great. Of course, she's a high school student so that doesn't help with the age problem.

I'm a bit late to this one. i love these i bought some fingerless gloves which are just under elbow length. I also took to wearing wristwarmers last year as my coat cuffs never meet my gloves x
