Anyone Good With Hair Color?

I'm feeling antsy these days, and that usually leads to one thing - doing something to my hair!

I dye it to cover lots of grey (I do it myself - too expensive to go to the salon every three weeks) - and I've been using a dark neutral shade for a while. I'm thinking about switching to something a bit warmer, but I don't like it when it gets too red, so I thought I'd try a "golden dark brown" this time. I'm sure it will still pick up some red (it always does) but I'm hoping it will just go a bit warmer. Think it'll be all right?

I like the high constrast you have now. Sorry no help here.
Maybe a new cut would be fun?

San - it would still be very dark, just with golden tones that show up in the sunlight. At least that's what I envision!

"Dark bronzed brown" is a better description of what I'm after.

That does sound beautiful.

Tara,
Do you have the line of, I think, Natural Formula colors, which are described as chocolate and espresso colors? I am coloring my hair to cover the gray too, and I really don't like any red in my hair. So the chocolate works for me, and I think it has a fair amount of warmness to it.
I am pretty sure the tones that are described as "golden" will still have a fair amount of red in them.

Red doesn't work in my hair either and like Hannah I've discovered that those colors described as "gold" usually have some red to them.
Are you planning to go to a salon? I would strongly recommend it, the type of effect you are after sounds like it requires a professional skills.

Tarzy,
As a stylist I would love to advise, however unless a stylist can see touch and test your hair it would really be rather unprofessional of me to do so:)

I am not familar with otc or drugstore products as they are nothing like the ones we use and I have no clue what is in them, thier base colors, how they react w/other colors or how well they cover grey for that matter.:(

As Bella advises ,best contact a pro, or call whomever cuts your hair for a reference to someone in your area. Good luck:)!!

I think golden brown will work fine. I do the same as you -- I have a lot of gray and cover it with a demi-permanent color. My natural hair color is black-brown. Sometimes I use a neutral brown dye, sometimes a chestnut (reddish brown) color, sometimes golden brown. Depends on what I am in a mood for!

Do you use a consistent brand? I do single process perm color at home.
Used to do medium golden brown all the time but I got too much brassiness at end of 6 wks so I switched to medium rich brown or just medium brown.
Now in the fall I alternate medium reddish brown with med brown (every other time) and in summer I do the same with med gold and med brown. I think it sort of balances out - really not to noticable.

I am a level 5 brunette with about 25% gray. Was using Feria a long time ago but switched to Loreal Excellence and now I use Revlon Colorsilk.
