Another pencil skirt and top question

So, if I tuck in a more voluminous top to a pencil skirt, what are my options for layering? without making it into a suit.

how about a cardigan? a vest or blazer would be too structured and take away from the volume, so a cardi worn open could be a nice solution.

depending on the blouse, you could try wearing it with a black l/s turtleneck underneath, but that might detract from the look you're after.

you could also try a pashmina - if you get warm, it could be converted to a scarf.

I ran across this outfit and thought about the discussion about fitted vs voluminous tops with pencil skirts. This example shows a top that has a defined waist, plus some blousy volume above that. I think it is very feminine, pretty and flattering.

Are you thinking of your grey tweed NAS pencil skirt, or your denim pencil skirts?

Ooh, what about your grey tweed skirt, the Marcella blouse in ivory or nantucket fog, and a yellow cardigan (your new favorite color combo), with a black patent belt over the blouse but under the cardi, right at the point where your blouse is tucked into the skirt (belt could be optional--you'd have to play with it). Black tights, and cream ankle booties.

Oh, Ana and Kyle, thanks for the ideas! specifically what I was wondering is if I do wear a cardigan, what's the proper silhouette and length then?

Just try on various shapes, Patience. (Right Ana?) I tried on a boyfriend cardigan and it really did not look right, so I typically aim for cropped length. I'm no expert, but I am assuming both lengths would work with an outfit like that.

Yes, I'm thinking as far as a cardi goes, you could do anywhere from hipbone length to right above the widest part of your hips, and then you could probably do a longer cardi as well. Maybe right below hips, with a belt or something? You'd probably want to wear the cardigan open though, to show the high waist of your pencil skirt and the blousiness of the top, too. Because of this, I'd look for one that has a bit of structure to it--nothing too lightweight or loosely woven or else it might not hang right.

What about an anorak? I'm trying to figure out how to wear the black one I got and thought it would work with a pencil skirt and a voluminous top, the only difference is that I won't tuck in the top.

Here's one I tried, does it work? Also I added a frame with a new image tool I downloaded, it was fun.

Patience, you have loads of options. Clever lasses this lot. What I like best about your style is how turn over your daily silhouettes. Form skirts to dresses to pants to jeans to blouses to clams. FANTASTIC.

Okay, I guess I will just experiment with cardigans. I kind of have a love hate relationship with cardigans and lately I've been thinking about this. I think that I'm going to try incorporate a ban on basic cardigans in my wardrobe. When I think about the cardigans I own that I really love, there is something beyond the basic cardigan styling about them. The ones that are more basic tend to give me grief.

Julia, I love the outfit, especially the anorak! I never got a chance to check out your HK purchases-- I need to go do that.

Patience, by basic cardi do you mean just a button up crew neck? Are you looking for cardis with embellishments (like your ruffly citron one you just picked up), or would a "basic" shaped cardi in an interesting color be okay?

Are you wanting a cardigan with some structure? After reading this forum I can tell that's why I don't like many of my cardigans...not enough structure in the shoulders or too boxy.
