So April, I thought you'd get a kick out of this. I started pawing through my closet today to try and figure out how I'd tackle this challenge. If I'd gotten this challenge 4-6 months ago I'd have probably had an easier time with it, since over the last year I've gone out of my way to try and wear more of what's in there. So I'd find a piece and go, "that would work" then realize I had actually worn it in the last several months because of my personal challenge to myself back at the beginning of 2012.
Every outfit I tried pulling together felt exactly like what you mentioned: "I'm wearing a group of statement pieces having an argument!"
I'll reveal the "real" challenge outfit tomorrow, since I think i finally pulled one together that works (albeit is a bit more of the "professional and funky me" that I used to be when I had to do speaking gigs more often.) In the meantime here's one that I tried on that was a total train wreck, imho. Especially the multi-gold chain necklace that makes me think of Jacob Marley in a Christmas Carrol.
When I asked my boyfriend "what do you think of this outfit?", without him knowing the actual challenge situation, his response was "the pieces by themselves are nice and you, but all together it looks like you're trying to put a bunch of things you haven't worn in a while together in a way that just doesn't look very you." (Smart and observant guy, that BF)
Then I told him about the challenge. His response was, Ahhhhhhh, ok. No, not really you at all when you combine them that way."
So this photo is the reject outfit. Tomorrow I've got the challenge outfit ready to wear to work. It won because I felt good in it, it met the challenge criteria, and got the BF's "now that looks like you!" nod of agreement!
Apologies for chopping out my head. I was in no makeup and stressed mode (from things not fashion related) so I don't want to scare anyone
