WIW black and white

How can I lighten up my look with this shirt? It is an black shirt with white stripes, originally fromexpress many years ago. I always wear it with black pants (all my pants for work are black or grey). I love how it fits, but it always seems so dark. Today I tried to mix patterns a bit and added a marled black and white shawl collar cardigan, but other than staying nice and warm, I don’t think it helps the outfit any.

How else can I style this shirt?

Very nice shirt How about wearing white pearls? There are many possibilities in addition to the traditional pearl necklaces, i.e. wearing one or more chunky pearls as pendants.

Or how about a white scarf or shawl with a black pattern (i.e. polkadots or checks)?

Oh yeah, that shirt really flatters your figure! (Which the cardi hides a bit, although I do like the pattern mix.)

Have you tried the shirt with gray pants?

How about a colored scarf at the neck? That would also provide some opportunity for pattern mixing. You could repeat the scarf's main color with your belt or shoes.

I like Cat's pearl idea too! Bringing out the white stripes with the luster of pearls would be so pretty.

I think a cream or tan cardigan+shoes, gray pants, and a gold or silver belt could be a fun lighter mixed neutrals look. Swapping the dark footwear for cognac and adding some light jewelry could also work.

I would try a solid color scarf or a boyfriend cardigan in jewel colors. Love the idea to add pearls. I wear mine with black and white outfits.

Thanks everyone. I don’t have many of the things mentioned as my current accessories are fairly minimal. I will keep an eye out for a new scarf that will work, or for some pearls.

I have a few ideas to try next time that I can work with out of my closet, like the grey pants, a colorful cardi, and lighter footwear.

Lighter pants and footwear and pearls would be great. I like mixing florals with stripes. Do you have a floral scarf? The shirt fits you beautifully and needs to be worn.

Love that shirt. How about a cardigan that has a grey or black background but a floral print with some lightness to it. I have a lot of dark colors in my wardrobe, and have recently noticed they are better for me if the are prints with splashes of color or white.

BTW, welcome to YFL - I am a long time Heinlein fan via my dad if that is what your user name is referencing. The outfit you posted looks great, so these suggestions are only gilding the lily!

I think you look good but to lighten things up I would try cognac shoes and a cognac belt. Gold necklace. And a lighter coloured jacket or cardigan. Light grey or tan would look good.
