WIW: A lot of Blue and a hack

I wore this outfit to church today. I wore nearly the same thing last night to our community theater. The only difference was last night I wore a warmer coat. Dark wash jeans, blue cashmere sweater, navy Cole Haan leather jacket, navy suede booties, Sak guitar strap bag, and new necklace my husband gave me for our anniversary.

The hack? The jacket came with a very bright gold zipper that I didn't like. So I took a sharpie to it. It will need regular maintenance, but I already like wearing the jacket better.

Cobalt sweater is fabulous, love it with the necklace!

I love a good Sharpie hack -- I've recently covered up bleach stains on a pair of DH's trousers using one.

Love this outfit. That cobalt looks great with the navy. And the necklace is a great finishing touch.

What a difference toning down the zipper makes. Sharpies are awesome. Worn belts, the wrong color hardware.... I actually have some alcohol inks (like bottles of liquid sharpie) that come in metallics that I’ve been thinking about changing some bag hardware and earrings with. Just be careful, because it may come off a non porous surface like metal, on to fabric. Maybe give it a wipe with a Kleenex before you put it on.

I love black hardware, so it's good to know that it can be hacked! Much cooler than the bright gold. The cobalt is beautiful, especially paired with that necklace.

Lisa, thank you. I didn’t wear the jacket right after using the Sharpie. I let it dry. It’s pretty permanent, but will need touchups.
Karen, thank you. What’s the product you used? I could have used gloves, because my fingers had black on them, but once it dried it’s pretty permanent.

I have many colors of alcohol ink, primarily Ranger/Tim Holtz (available at Joann and on line) and some by Piñata. Try applying with a q-tip. If you want to test them, I can drop them by next time I'm in your area. There are also some great metallic pens I have used to change the color of earrings.

Brilliant hack. Did you have to take the sharpie to the whole zipper or just the pull? (I’m eyeing my own gold zipper here...)

Karen, using a qtip might have worked better. I have several sizes of Sharpies, but couldn’t get into some of the tight spaces. I’m also wondering if some clear nail polish might protect the pull. I don’t want it to be too shiny though.

Rachy, thank you. I did go over the teeth of the zipper as much as possible. That’s how I got ink all over my fingers, by pulling away the leather from the zipper. If I were to do it again, I might use painter’s tape and wear gloves.
