WIW…layers for spring?

The extended forecast predicts a big snowfall this weekend, but temps at/or above freezing for the next two weeks. It was above freezing today, very sunny, but with a wind from the north. I layered for the walk into town. By the time we got to Queenie’s for a treat, the scarf was off and the navy puffer was unzipped! On the way home the mitts and hat were off!

Lots of ‘seasonally confused’ looks, which I can totally understand - except for the guys in shorts!

I’m considering a small seasonal closet turnover - with the heavy puffer and boots going into the off season closet, and mix and match layers for the next month or so. Saw signs of spring - daffodils and tulips pushing up through the ground where the snow had pulled back.

How are you managing the bridge season between late winter/early spring?

Great strategy, Carla. I just put away my big puffer today and pulled out one of my more substantial trenches. I won't do my full closet switchout for another month at least (maybe more, depending how the season shapes up) but for now, I can make this adaptation at least.

I am also wearing layers. It's warmer here than by you, I think, but still breezy and colder some days. Last week, with temps from 2C to 9C or so and varying sun/ drizzle/ cloud, I layered toppers and popped hat and gloves and scarf in bag for the colder bits.

I wore the lavender coat over the denim jacket, the lavender coat over sweaters and shirts, the puffer under the lavender coat, and the puffer over the denim jacket and merino or cotton T, depending on the day. Usually with a scarf.

It's a tough time of year to dress for.

@ Suz - this time of year one needs to carry a bag or backpack for all of the off-and-on stuff. It is also the time of year I’m most likely to loose a trailing scarf!

How am I handling it? Not well, honestly! It's bouncing back and forth between cold and warm and I don't really know if I'll end up feeling cold or overdressed. I'm layering but still ended up changing tops yesterday, then putting back on a different sweater on top. It's a guessing game!

I forgot; I also carried an umbrella. This is where fashion backpacks come in super handy!

My strategy -- aside from the layers -- spring colours. I start lightening and brightening up even more. So...white tops/ tees, stripes (well, when don't I wear those -- let's be real!), the lavender coat instead of dark coat when possible, etc.

Quite a few days were warm enough for my peep toe booties and no coat, but I wore my heavy puffer just a few days ago. Most days I wear my camel coat or a thin puffer.

Lots of flowers out- daffodills, forsythias, cherry blossoms and other flowering trees.

Carla-you are my inspiration for layering! I put away my cream colored puffer which was a winter workhorse just this week. I kept the heavier black puffer out for a little while longer.
Been layering heat-tech long sleeve crew necks under V neck sweaters.
Short lightweight fuschia puffer most days. Tried my quilted coat but not warm enough yet.
Lots of scarves, but I end up pulling them off my neck halfway through the day.

I keep a warm hat and gloves in the pockets of all heavy jackets, for on and off season…
Like Suz, I carry an umbrella in the sling pack. A quilted vest is a treasure for running in and out of the car on errands.

I’m the anti-layerer , which is dumb because I live in the perfect climate to do just that . I feel too stuffed into my clothes when I try to later and am not a fan of scarves and hats and such so I’m either in or out with the weather . It’s still a little cool here to put away the winter stuff but I’m itching to do so . To be fair, I’m also only running from car to building so it’s not an important skill to master I guess .

I’m more or less wearing my lightest down puffer, usually with a fabric scarf and some Isotoner gloves now that weather is warming up but my heavy stuff is still on standby just in case. You just can’t be sure of the weather around here during the month of March.

I'm loving all the colours in your outfit then the scarf to complement the whole look!
I think for me, lightening up colours for spring. Today I wore a mint sweater and navy cords as I felt cold, but I have a cold so my personal "thermostat" has been a bit off lately. I usually run hot! Yes, bringing a bag for taking off mitts, hat, scarf, etc is a good idea! If something goes missing, it's usually this time of year!

When I am convinced the weather will stay warm I switch the boots to the back and the sandals to the front. The sweaters go to the less prominent shelves and the lighter tops take their place. I would bet that I would have kept my puffers zipped and gloves on if I had been with you!

I hope to downsize, but that is tricky with spring and the weather from cold to hot. I hope to do a one in, one out to address that problem. I hope to identify one dark neutral,one light one, one or two accent colors...Vivenne Files 4X4 with three pair shoes and numerous accessories plus one dress will keep what fits in a holding zone. And add pieces as the need arises. I expect to borrow heavily from other seasons for comfort in changing weather.

I live in a coastal town north of Boston and walks by the ocean continue to be cold and windy! I am not ready to put away my warmest puffers and all the accessories yet! Spring is very fickle and I am usually cold! I am often wearing more layers than others.

Today was a confusing spring day! Looked warm and sunny through the window, but there was a chilly wet wind blasting around town. Definitely wished I wore socks!

Lol, we got 1.5 inches of snow Tuesday and that was as much snow as we had jan- Feb. this year has just been seasonally confused. It’s 70F/21C one day and it freezing the next. Layers are even more necessary this year. And more than ever im finding large scarfs are essential to help to regulate the temperature, easy enough to wrap or unwrap.

I admire your puffer layering and your spicy reds and tans that coordinate so well with the blues. The small transitional closet turnover sounds like a great idea to ease you into spring.

Here we had the usual February fake-out where it was crazy warm for a while, leaves and blossoms came out, and now it's back to freezing. I'm layering with cardigans instead of coats when I can, and I did put away all my thick winter scarves and brought out my gauzy lightweight ones. They really change the mood for me.

Okay! I was talking to a friend who said this week is the last week of winter, and the big snowfall forecast for Friday has been cancelled in favour of rain! 10-15 mm! Rubber boots, raincoats, and umbrellas?

You really know how to layer, Carla. The way your color choices repeat is so intentional and well done. Hats off to all of you who deal with outerwear so regularly and fashionably. It’s not much of a requirement in my climate, thankfully. I have my hands full just pulling together a daily outfit that looks good!

Carla, I'm outside a lot in the elements - many times a day - and need to layer and wrap up - or peel off! I am almost never "car to building" - unless I am shopping at a huge indoor mall.

It's colder here in the morning in the Spring. So I choose a warmer topper, scarf, and we are still wearing beanies. 95% of Seattle wears a head covering of sorts. That icy wet wind by the water is chilly! Ears ache if not covered and walking around outside.

But the Winter accessories can come off or be left at home when I go out later in the day. Sometimes I choose a lighter topper too.

Shoes are boots, rain boots, or hi-tops.

But today and tomorrow will be a freak sunny 14C to 16C later in the afternoon! So I will throw on some low top sneakers or oxfords like these.

Wow two puffers it must be cold! It’s getting warmer here but strangely in the 20s at night then 60s during the day so I start and end the day with a layers and a coat and shed things as the day progresses.

What a master-class in layering! Every single element in this outfit works just right.

I find this transitional period a little hard to dress for. Mornings are still very chilly but days are pretty springy, so layers are the key for me as well.

Southern Ontario weather is a crazy beast. Though I’d like to put away my parka, that will not happen until my son plays his last hockey game. Arenas are cold! But for regular walks I have a Patagonia zip up I was gifted. I add a puffer vest and a light puffer if it is not raining. If it is raining, I reach for a spring jacket that has a tougher, more substantial shell. But because my parka is still in the closet, I often reach for it on an early morning! Luckily my winter boots are waterproof. I tend to keep these out and wear them until the end of April. I enjoy walking and I don’t like the idea of soggy, muddy footwear.
