Turquoise beads = fail

I am really disappointed with the turquoise glass beads from Nordstrom. They are actually clear, with some kind of plastic translucent turquoise coating. I have only worn them twice and the plastic is peeling off some of the beads! I'm returning mine as soon as I can get back to the store, but I thought I'd give a heads up to anyone who was thinking of picking up a strand.

Really??? I have just bought mine (yesterday) and was looking forward to wearing them. I am still going to keep them for now, but if they start doing the same thing, than back they go.

Maybe I just got a defective pair, but I probably wouldn't take a chance on a new one. It's pretty ugly and cheap looking

What a coincidence that you should mention this! Hubby and I went to the store yesterday and I was planning on picking up the necklace and a watch for him. My husband got chatting with the saleslady about the pearl necklaces and this is what she had to say -
Apparently, the turquoise necklace and similar pearl necklaces at Nordies are made of coated glass bead. They look better than plastic beads because of the intrinsic shine of glass but over time, the paints tend to chip off. The pearls are lighter in shade, so they look okay when that happens but the brighter beads tend to look shabby.

Elpgal, I wish someone had told me that. I could live with it if it happened "over time," but "over time" should not mean within 2 wearings!

Thanks, Maya, that means I can stop trying to finagle a way to get a set to Canada. Bummer though. I'm surprised, because Angie said they were good quality.

I thought they were at first too Brianna. Maybe she hasn't had the same problem yet. I'm not sure why I do. As I said I have hardly worn them. I can take pictures of the damage later.

Oh dear, Maya, how disappointing! I put this necklace on my birthday wish list. Pretty sure this will be my sons bday present to me. Maybe it was fluke!

I bought them in the white and so far they haven't chipped or peeled. However, the 2nd time I wore them they broke! I took them back and Nordies gave me a new one free of charge. Maybe you could take yours back an see if it was just a bad necklace?

I don't think I'm attached to it enough to get a new one. I'll use the money towards the Trouvé boots, which I'm hoping will come back in stock on Wednesday.

I knew I'd be met with some skepticism so I took some pics!

Believe me, it is not hard to get the coating off. All I have to do is scratch with my fingernail and it peels with no resistance at all. Even as I type this I got a speck of turquoise plasticky stuff on my keyboard, just from touching them to take a picture.

I can't say whether this is a fluke or a quality issue, though, so if you really love them and don't mind risking it, go for it.

It's as if some kind of chemical ate the coating. Rotten luck.

I'm trying to think if I dropped them or spilled something on them, but I can't think of any incident that would have caused this to happen. I only wore them to work. The rest of the time they have been sitting in my drawer.

I wonder if it's a climate thing? It has been very hot and humid here for the past few weeks. Other than that, I don't have any idea.

Would they have been sitting on your bare skin? Do you use any particular skin care products? Then again, if something you use affected the finish, you'd think those skin care products would also eat your skin. You don't APPEAR to be molting ...

Oh, I do use sunscreen. Maybe that's it. Well, I can't really justify a necklace that's going to fall apart because of a thin coat of sunscreen.

Omigosh, Maya! You just saved me some money. I was going to call to order the turquoise glass beads from the Honolulu Nordstrom today as they only had 2 left. Not only that but I was going to drape them around and through my clear crystal chandelier as I've always loved aqua crystals on chandeliiers ( a la Rachel Ashwell of Shabby Chic). I was also going to wear them as a necklace, so would have been subjecting the beads to an unusual amount of handling. Sounds like they would have deteriorated fast going by your experience. Thanks so much for posting this!

My goodness, that is SO incredibly annoying! I like the theory of the sunscreen ruining the beads, because this *exact* thing happened to me last summer with my favourite set of beads. I nearly cried when I discovered the colour had removed from the beads and transferred nicely onto my decolletage!
