Learning how to use the camera

I am finally learning how to take good photos. My son gave me a great lesson yesterday and I cannot believe that have owned this nice Canon SLR for 1 year and never taken it off of Auto, much less learned how to take timed WIW photos. He also gifted me a good wired remote (have tried two wireless remotes that have not functioned) and lent me his 85mm lens!

So, I have determined where my outside shots will be. Next I need to figure out the inside.

I was playing with the bags. While I absolutely love the look of a clutch, and have learned what a marvelous accessory they are from our rock star clutch ladies on YLF, I find them impractical. So, this one is empty, but I think it is a nice look!
I am wearing:
Blazer - Gap
Pants -Loft (new, on sale - disappointed with quality now that I am looking at pics - pattern is poorly matched)
Boots - Sole Society
Bags - clutch - ? something inexpensive from Kohls (loved today's post on the Danier silver clutch!) - satchel: Furla
Sweater - BR

Hurray for camera savvy children. You look terrific in your natural habitat. Love the clutch in this as well as the bright yellow tee. FWIW, I've never been able to take a decent photo on an SLR off "auto." I blame it on the small screen and my middle age eyes. I can never get the picture as clearly focused as she can.

Bravo Laurie, on both the look and the technical triumph! My camera batteries are both exhausted and I can't find the darn mini-USB cable to recharge! Well, not that I've mastered the WIW process yet, myself, but, now I have this additional frustration. I don't have a fancy camera (tho I could probably swipe DH's), but I think my little auto would work okay for outfit shots. I just need to "get it together" as far as photo sessions go! So thank you for additionally inspiring me!

I am also one of those who always uses the Auto function on my SLR to take pics. But a tripod has helped enormously. I still haven't worked out how to do really good outdoor shots, mind you.

Wow, great photos and you look amazing, Laurie! They almost make me want to hop off the tub and take some photos outside. I don't think I could do nearly half as well, though. Perhaps you should hire out that clever son of yours for YLF photography lessons. I know you'll be sad to see him go back to school.

Fantastic pictures. I love the satchel with this especially. A remote is what I need - when I do self timed pictures they are always out of focus. If anyone has a solution please do tell!

I just bought a new dslr camera this week and then chickened out! I think I want to wait for the model I want in its new, touch screen version due out in a few weeks. The 85mm looks great.
