Today is the national St s day in Wales, dydd dewi sant ,and on St David’s day it is traditional to wear the national flower of Wales ,the daffodil, usually pinned to your lapel. The leek is an alternative but not many people do that as after a few hours you tend to smell ,well, shall we say ,pungent.
Children in primary school go in dressed in national costume but for adults unless you work in a folk museum, sporting a daffodil is the thing .Not everybody does it but it is still quite common to see here today.
The daffodil signifies the return of spring-and this year the first blizzard of the season!
I ve photographed my poor st David’s day daffodil in its pot this morning and as I don’t think I m going out today other than to throw a few snowballs,I think I ll leave it to bloom another day!
Anyway this got me to thinking,do you have any traditional items of dress that are still worn in your part of the world.?I think Christmas and Halloween are fairly universal these days but what about saints days and other celebrations?Do let me know ,I love the international flavour of YLF.
