Cold weather accessories…any trends?

Are you seeing any trendy items or novel ways of styling winter accessories like hats, scarves, and gloves? It looks like winter 2021-2022 is going to be colder and snowier than usual, and I’ve dedicated what remains of my clothing budget to cold weather accessories. Looking for inspiration…

I’ve seen fewer winter accessories out their this winter so far, but I’m guessing cute and colorful socks for everyone. Beanies with a pompon on top are another, also felted hats are another thing I am seeing. Fingerless gloves and mittens are also appearing. Good luck finding something that you love.

In the stores today and I am predicting another winter of knit hats with a pom pom on top! Also lots of snuggly scarves, hats and gloves that look like Barefoot Dreams blankets and cardigans. ‘Furry’ knits too. Lots of pastels, pinky beige and grey, except at Ann Taylor: violent pink and orange! I didn’t see anything notable in itself, just notable for being soft and gentle.

Trends I'm liking and craving, but not applicable to my locale:

Big statement scarves - shearling, super chunky knits, quilted technical fabrics
Ponchos & capes
Shearling faux or real - gloves, mitts, hats, bags, etc.

My fancy is tickled by something called a "dik dik" - like a thermal dickie with arm holes for layering.

I see a lot of social media types using their sweaters like scarves and that seems very practical (i.e. warm) to me. And, of course, hats are wear it at!

I’m all about beanies this winter……I also like fun shawls and short shrug length ponchos with or without sleeves. I’m making a scarf/shawl thingy that has buttons so it stays in place. I am not a fan of long dangling ends that drag, catch or get pulled. Bright colors and multi color patterns seem to be popular among knitting patterns worked by people I know locally. Button cowls are another item that seems popular.

The use of a sweater wrapped as a scarf reminds me of a thneed from Dr. Seuss

Faux fur / teddy bucket hats and knitted “ hoods “ ( I’ve ordered one from Simon’s that is essentially a neck warmer that has a loose hood attached . Great for pulling up over your head walking from the car to the store / building / house etc if it’s blowing or wet . I think Prada has a knit bonnet of sorts that ties under the chin , but I like the slightly looser ones that don’t make you look like a 5 year old .

Ooh I like the idea of a knitted hood/neck warmer. I hate hats but sometimes you just need something on the head.

I was going to say pom poms, I know they were pretty hot last year. I love ponchos so if they are trendy still I'm happy. But for me they are not winter gear as much as for the in-between seasons.

My favorite local boutique is carrying a line of knit hats with giant soft pom-poms on top. They are super cute on other people but not right for my tiny head. It may not be trendy but I’m sticking with my slouchy soft beret-beanies! Our weather just shifted cooler so I’m already getting wear out of them.

Hmmm… DH was gifted a burgundy beanie in a golf goodie bag. It had a big patch (beer brand) on the roll that was easily picked off with my handy dandy seam ripper. It matches my puffer perfectly. I was thinking about adding a Pom Pom if I could locate a source…

I have seen a few leopard print beanies with matching scarves, and I thought of ordering a set, and I am trying to picture it with my olive coat. There are also beanies with colossal pom poms.

Runcarla-its been a long time, but i remember making Pom poms back in the day. If i remember correctly, you basically make a donut out of cardboard (i think we used the cardboard that came in my dad’s shirts) and then loop yarn in the middle of the donut to outside of the donut, and than cut yarn on the outside of the donut….ok i think its easier to do than to write. Off to see if there’s a you tube video

My best winter accessory is a plain black Buff tubular scarf, which I mostly wear as a beanie. Incredibly useful and versatile. The kind of thing you don’t know you need until it enters your life.

This is a good year for hats. I was delighted to dig a very old faux shearling bucket hat from the depths of my winter scarf storage. It’s now back in circulation.

I’m on the lookout for more bucket hats in particular, but also eyeballing Uniqlo’s cashmere blend baseball caps.

Yarn stores have Pom Poms. Last year I knitted a hat and ordered a Pom Pom from Etsy because I wanted a particular color not available at my LYS. There were quite a few shops on Etsy with them, if I remember.

Ponchos/wraps seem to be kind of popular this year. J. Crew has one. Last month I ordered a black cashmere one from an Italian company with an Etsy shop and it’s very backordered so I’m guessing they are trending in Europe? Or maybe just supply chain issues? It will probably be too cold to wear it here this year outdoors by the time I get it, however. I was picturing wearing it for outdoor dining, but that will likely end for me once the snow flies.

It’s not yet cold enough to see a lot of hats. So far I’ve seen:
- regular beanies, less slouchy than before
- beanies with a wider fold and extra material on top
- mostly black baseball caps, sometimes from wool like fabric. Worn with puffers or wool coats. I like this one but my ears would freeze.

I don’t know if there are any hat trends I want to follow. I’m interested in matching sets in solid colors this season. Simple but it is actually hard for me, most hats are too big for my small head and those that fit not always have a matching scarf.

Ohh, I want the kind of hood/scarf combo Lisa P described! I’m guessing they’d be best with the scarf part so wide it’s almost a shawl. I’m going to a “made in Berlin” market tomorrow and will keep my eyes open for those.

I don’t know if they’re trendy, but I’m loving my fingerless gloves with attached “hats” for my fingertips that I can pull over the fingertips to make cozy mittens.

Reading with interest as the really cold weather for hats and gloves is fleeting here.

I do love winter accessories though - especially wool hats.

I'll admit, I never pay too much attention to trends w/r/t winter accessories (or accessories in general). I just add the pieces I fall in love with, and that's plenty!

That said, I agree with a lot of the observations above. I'm seeing giant scarves (both chunky knits and puffers), pom-poms still going strong, and sherpa/teddy/shearling type fleeces, both as trim and on their own.

I have to laugh at the idea of Buffs and neck gaiters trending; I've had one for over a decade that lives in my hiking kit and sees lots of use in the backcountry, but I rarely reach for it for around-town use because I need to create opportunities to wear my "fancy" scarves.

LaPed, same here about the buffs! I have several that I use in cold weather for hiking/running. They serve as neck warmers or sometimes I use them on my head to keep my ears warm. When I warm up, they can easily go in a pocket or pack. I always keep one in my car and my hiking pack. They’ve served as handkerchief, napkin, etc. I choose ones in colors that go with my gear. I have no desire to wear them with non-gear outfits — I have too many pretty scarves to wear!

I don't know how trending they are, or how much I'd use them, but I'm thinking of adding a cloche and a beret for winter. I could just see if any of moms hats float to the top that I may like to use!
