I'm curious too. As someone who always just wore a watch to tell time I am now interested in using it as an accessory. I have recently acquired a white watch and my birthday gift from DH was a gorgeous Michael Kors tortoiseshell watch. I had been happily wearing my nondescript silver skagen for many years which now seems odd in its delicate state next to my big clunky cool watches.

I honestly have not a clue. I wear a silver plated watch with basically everything I own. I used to constantly wear a black leather strap with a simple circular creme face watch - a little basic and boring, I must admit!

I am excited for Angie's input too, I have worn a simple black rectangle faced citizen with a silver band and have recently branched out to wearing husband's watch for a sporty look. We are actually talking about finding watches to buy that we can share in the future so this is timely!

I'm here. Remember that this is just *my* opinion, and that it's hard to define frumpy:

Unless you are wearing a true classic, a fab vintage number, a great man's watch, a fun style like a Swatch, or a fashionable oversized watch - rethink your watch style.

Again, it's hard to explain and I am very opinionated. Watches, bags and specs are my thing. Sorry to sound obtuse.

hmmm. I don't think that is particularly obtuse... A great men's watch sounds like what I was thinking. Neither of us have a gold tone watch and I am fascinated by a skeleton style our wrist size is close enough to wear on the same number of links.

I have a little gold panther-link watch with a round white face that I've worn for years. Hmmm, wonder if I should tuck it aside until little gold watches with round white faces come back!

Related... what about artsy watches? Some of my favorites look like bracelets that just happen to have a watch face. I can't think of them as frumpy, but they don't fit the strict requirements Angie listed either.

This is a great question Alicat - thanks for posting it. While I don't have helpful advice about watches, I'm very curious about this too. I have a horrible feeling my watches are "dated" somehow.

Ulp! I have one of those bracelets too!

To Alicat's last question, my (rather unhelpful here) favourite is a little ring which is a miniature chrome-bracelet watch with a pink dial. Followed by my Rolex, but that largely for sentimental reasons (dad's wedding gift to mum, her graduation gift to me).

This is an interesting question, I never saw watches as anything but investment classic pieces, although I myself haven't worn one for almost 20 years!

I had a Swatch when I was a teenager, but after that watches (for me) moved to the category of its own. Apart from three key elements of style, again - for me - shoes, hairstyle, handbag, a watch would be the next thing one shouldn't take lightly. That's probably why I haven't found an ideal one for so long and gradually got used to not wearing it at all.

But I l.o.v.e. my husband's watch, both on him and on me. Perhaps I might include it in some of my WIWs, especially after seeing Angie approves of them - Mr. O's is definitely one great watch

Oh. My.

I wear the same watch every day. But, it is chunky (although it is the women's version), and on my small wrist, it **looks** rather like a man's watch. It really has never occurred to me to wear a "fashion watch."

I have a great summer watch (I do wear it in the winter too)... A white Toywatch but have not found a great non-white one yet. I do have a stainless men's watch that I ordered online but I don't like it nearly as much as the Toywatch. I would love recommendations in the silver/stainless category.

I have a classic, non-blingy Phillip Stein watch that was a gift from my husband:

I like it because it's simple and can be easily dressed up or down, and I can change out the bands to suit my outfit. It's just big enough on my small wrists that it looks substantial (the case spans the width of my wrist) without overpowering me. I think it's a classic that I'll be able to wear for many years!

Both of my watches are classics, I think, despite the fact that not much else about my style is classic. I wear one every day. I can't wear the watches w/ the big metal links because they always slide down below my wrist bone and bang on everything and drive me bonkers, so I always go for leather bands. They also need to be pretty slim since I have small wrists. I have a midnight blue/gold Movado museum watch and a very narrow black/gold Seiko.

Like Lisa mentioned the other day, and Manidipa, I have a Rolex --that my husband gave me on our first anniversary (I told him it was the "Rolex Anniversary"). He made it clear that I'd better not be cheating over the years with any other watch, lol!

Some time ago I looked around and decided that wearing any watch at all was making me look dated. Now all the cute fashion watches are about and the trend of wearing a chunky man's watch. I guess I could put mine away for awhile if it looks dated. It's just the classic stainless/gold style.

Mine's so RATE, I think I might get away with it --- if I wasn't so scared of losing it or something.

My mum wore bunches of gold bangles and a stainless steel bangle with (for entirely unknown and doubtless deeply exciting reasons) a pile of SAFETY PINS along with said watch, so the face is a little scratched up. I'm telling myself that trends it up a bit as, you know, an UWP Rolex!

I would think a Rolex counts as a classic watch. I have a Baume & Mercier Riviera which I wear every day and I just love it.

I purchased two large oversized face watches this year and love them both! One is a rose gold Seiko with a mother of pearl face, and the other is a peugeot white ceramic band watch with three swarovsky (sp?) faces that are removeable, plain crystal, dark pink crystal, and sapphire blue crystal. See pics below. I feel very curent wearing them!
