viva, how do you feel about shipping and return charges though? I realize these are costs that need to be paid for, and I am OK with paying fees because it saves me the time and hassle of driving to a store (where my cost would be just the gas mileage). But some stores have pricey return fees. I once ordered something from Garnet Hill without realizing its fees are much higher than the stores I'm used to. After I returned the items (two very lightweight cardigans, so it's not like shipping would have been tremendously costly in terms of size or weight), I realized that I had paid over $20 in shipping and handling both ways that would not be refunded. I wrote to them and said that if I had known it would cost me over $20 just to try on their items, I would never have ordered them. They never replied to my message to their customer service.

Interestingly, though, after I posted a review of the cardigan explaining why it didn't fit me (without even mentioning the shipping fee issue), they reached out to me via the review and refunded those S&H fees. I guess they weren't reading emails to customer service, but were reading reviews...

But anyway, now the floral pants are a moot point... They sold out! Yesterday evening, after I posted here, I went to the Zara site thinking I would take the plunge (it was my birthday after all), and they ran out of stock right in front of my eyes. It was the very last size remaining, too, so that wasn't a surprise. Serves me well for being indecisive.

Returns are indeed part of the online game! I known they are a drag but you really have to be ready for them. It was a real eye opener for me when I realized that with online buying my home was my dressing room. In a store I never buy everything I take into the dressing room. Why would that be any different with online buying? I keep, at most, one of every three things I order, I would guess. Sometimes 0 of three. I think it's just part of online shopping.

Janet and Christina, I am sooo tempted. At the same time I'm so on the fence. I wish I could try them on before ordering. I know we should all expect to deal with mail returns when online shopping, but I find those such a drag. I've even been wearing an itchy merino turtleneck because I didn't get around to returning it in time.

I was coming in to say what Janet said, more or less. I struggle with needs va wants too, but I'm trying to stock up on basics to make the bolder pieces work. Those pants are fab, so if you can make them work with a handful of tops, why not?

I think that joy-per-wear factor can be really compelling if your wardrobe is already solidly stocked with basics. I've had the occasional wild card purchase like this end up being a good buy (JPW-wise). Just depends on how they feel and look once you try them, and if you are able to make enough outfits with them to make them at least somewhat versatile.

viva, your comments are very insightful and hit right on the nail (or all the nails) for me. The price is definitely a consideration for me because of my current budget overall for new purchases. While I can afford them, they won't give me the most bang for the buck.

Except, of course, when I consider what Barbara Diane so aptly calls "joy per wear" factor...

viva, I think I might have quite a few items similar to what you've mentioned (though not all--I'm lacking in the jackets department). I even like the cooler-weather styling in the Zara website with pointy-toe boots (I have black ones--not sure if they would work) and long sleeves.

Runcarla, I am indeed concerned about how to style and when/how to wear them. I find white pants tricky in general because of how easily they show stains and scuffs.

The funny thing is... before I stumbled onto these, I had decided that my new pant purchase would be a very sensible pair of J.Crew Factory Addison chino trousers in khaki, for their neutrality and versatility. Not sure what this says about my needs vs my wants...

Shapewise, though, these flares are my favorite shape to wear, so that might be part of the appeal.

What a fun look. The joy per wear factor is high. If you can see yourself wearing them, get them. And if the weather by you works for it, wear them right away.

I love them. I wouldn't bother with them because they're highly impractical *for me*, plus highly unlikely to fit me, and a bunch of pattern on white on my lower half is probably not a great idea anyway. But, if I had a different kind of lifestyle in which I could get use out of these, I might try them. They really are cool-looking.

I think everything Vivian says is right on and you should try them if you love them!

I think you'd have to be comfortable with the idea that they might feel relevant only for the spring/summer, and only you know your comfort with spending on that kind of item. For me, $70 is not too much to spend on a fun trendy item I know I will wear. (I have made pricier trendy mistakes that I really regret.) if you can think of five occasions to wear them this summer, including tops/shoes you have on hand, then I think they might be worth the plunge. But I'd probably go through that exercise so they don't just sit in your closet like a museum exhibit (I have been guilty of that too).

But just off the top of my head, I could see these dressed down with earthy leather sandals, a gauzy top, and a jean jacket; dressed up with colored Sandals and a black or red top; and even made more tailored with a crisp white blazer and heels. So I think you have options if you want them.

I fell in love with this impractical pair of pants. I wasn't looking for pants, I don't need more pants, I was just browsing them after checking out the Zara shoe line-up (where I also fell in love with some pointy oxfords).

What do you all think of these? Would I have buyer's remorse the next day? Could they be more versatile than they seem? My local Zara is not very close and I can't go try them on anytime soon.
