I much preferred a garter belt if I had to wear hosiery at all, and I had a nice set with bra and panties in a peachy color that I wore under a pink silk shell with my interview suit (looking back, I realize that was much more of a "ladies who lunch" suit, but I didn't know it at the time). Anyway, I somehow mentioned that to a guy who made typical guy associations to the garter belt and made some comment about a hidden power or secret strength or something. There was a very simple poplin A-line skirt with loose gathers skirt that I wore for years. It had paisley with a bright blue background. It was intended as a dressy piece, but my favorite way to wear in it was with a black T-shirt or sweater and flats. Ballet flats and bare legs or black booties and patterned black tights. Between the midi length skirt and the ankle shaft of the booties, there was just a little bit of lacey tights visible. I felt very comfortable in that and recall that when I wore it to interview for a grad program, one of the star students told me it was the perfect outfit for that subject. I immediately think, "suit and heels," though I haven't dressed like that in years. Still, I think wearing a nice, well-fitting, dark suit and pumps made me feel very authoritative. It's a kind of uniform, and when I was in the Army, I think I felt quite powerful in many of my uniforms. Now I don't know that I dress in a way that makes me feel powerful, although I think wearing a Little Black Dress of some type, and again, a nice pair of pumps, makes me feel that way. It's that idea of the uniform again, the kind that signals a certain amount of experience and authority.
