I'm also a WNTW fan, although we get the UK rather than the US version here. I'm not sure if watching WNTW really gave me any concrete ways to push myself fashion wise, other than pushing myself to pick colour rather than black.

OTOH, ylf has given my wardrobe a whole new lease on life. It's made me realise that its ok to have fun with clothes and accessories, even as you get older. The area it has best helped is my work wardrobe. Although it used to be smaller, it was very bland and I never felt any of it was really me. All the workwear items I've bought recently I really like and would be happy to wear outside of work too. It makes going to work so much more fun to wear something you like and feel good in!!!

I was also a fan of WNTW and would be in awe of the beautiful clothes.Since I was working earlier,I was used to wearing formals and had no clue about dressing in casual clothes.I would watch WNTW and dream about wearing such clothes when I join the workforce. To add to that I have always been a size 2 and have gained some weight in the past 4 years. So getting dressed was a painful experience.I used to buy ill-fitting clothes and feel terrible about myself.Having a baby added chaos to the situation as I now needed MOTG outfits. YLF has taught me to love my body and dress accordingly.I have realized that even though I dont have a job now,I can still dress well and feel good about myself.I would have never thought of wearing shorts and skirts before. Now I have even added a dress and trench to my wardrobe.I only buy clothes that will go with atleast 3 pairs that I have(Thank you Dani) and Angie's rule of one in-one out prevails. It only takes a minute to change earrings and wear nail polish but it makes a big difference in the way I feel about myself.I have a better sense of colour and texture.I enjoy trying new styles.Haircut is one area which needs to be tackled.

i think that ylf has definitely pushed me to actually try (as in physically put on and go out in) new things. before this, if i liked a trend, i'd get something cheap so i could dip a toe in the water, but then let it hang in my closet or sit on a shelf until i eventually gave it away, because it "just wasn't me." i guess ylf is showing me who "me" can actually be! and apparently that me is willing to try almost anything!

i admire those of you who can make such drastic hair changes - i get so torn because i WANT to (or want to want to, LOL), but the level of commitment scares me a little. it just seems to irreversible!

The past couple of years I've slowly added more dresses/skirts to my wardrobe. Belts and necklaces have become everyday accessories as well. Oh and knee high boots. I think my next step is to add more color and play around with layering more( I'm thinking vests/jackets/blazers)!

Great topic, Laura. What can I say, your style fits you to a T. It's effortless and lovely. That's success. I was once a black pants and white shirt or turtleneck girl and have come a long, long way since then. Thank you, Angie and YLF!!! Soon, when I get time, I'll post some pics of my own new short crop. When do we get to see your new 'do?

Since YLF (2-3 months), I have worn skirts more times than I have in my entire life. I have worn shorts in public and dare I say, worn them well - this is something I never even imagined I would be able to do. For the first time I am making a concerted effort to accumulate items in non-neutral colors and am thoroughly enjoying layering and combining them. And dresses - NEVER would I have thought I could find a dress that would look alright, let alone good on me. Now I have two. I am trying on more styles while I'm out shopping and not summarily dismissing them as "not for me" like I used to. I have become more discerning of why a certain style will or will not work on me. Never ever tried scarves or belts and now I am actively scouting stores for certain styles. I still go through days where my bad body image takes over and I wonder if it is worth the effort, but on most days I am more confident and there is an extra spring in my step!

I've only recently found YLF and my style is already reinventing itself. You girls are so spunky and have all influenced me to try new things and step outside the mental box i had created for myself. (case in point- just this weekend i bought a vest, leggings, white slim leg pants and a pencil skirt...all of which i had previously avoided like the plague because i thought i couldn't pull them off...and they all brought an appreciative gleam to my bf's eyes)
I had previously replied on WNTW and my roommate's opinions to steer my fashion but have found that taking tips from Angie saves a lot more money (i don't buy as many random pieces anymore) and is just so much more fun!
i feel like i've only just begun to feel comfortable in my own skin, but i'm loving it already =)

Like many others have said, I find myself having more confidence to try new things that I wouldn't have necessarily tried pre-YLF. I think that my biggest change is in confidence in the clothes that I have and also in my ability to buy and find new clothes that suit me and express my style. I used to choose clothes based on them being "good enough" to cover my body; now I try to find things that flatter, are versatile, and suit my lifestyle and personality.

Now, I also tend to think about clothes in terms of outfits, and I know, for example, that my skirts need shorter shirts than my pants. My evolution became clear last weekend when I was traveling with my mom and sister. I packed carefully, making sure that I included items that went with one another and could be interchanged if necessary. I didn't have to pack that much because I knew exactly what went with what. Each morning, I got dressed once and felt good. I watched my mom and sister change their clothes about 4-5 times in the morning and then again at night because they had packed tops and bottoms that they didn't necessarily like and that didn't necessarily go together. That used to be me every time I travelled. It felt good to just get dressed and be ready to go while also feeling like I looked pulled together.

I'm still evolving and trying to push outside my comfort zone, but I'm much more comfortable trying new things.

this is so interesting...
i love the idea of going from a blonde bob to an auburn-striped pixie. that is awesome. basically i'm just starting my 'evolution' i feel, but i'm curious what i'll look like in a year or two.

right now i am trying to switch gears from being a graduate student to a professional 40yo, basically upgrade my style... i really relate to maya's point about not taking this too seriously though.

i just watched WNTW for the first time, old episodes on DVD, and they ridiculed my favorite Fiorentini and Baker boots! and put the woman in little pointy kitten heels instead. that kind of sums up my fears about mainstream style advice. i want to look more pulled together AND more myself.

i was so excited to find style advice from someone who wears doc martens!

right now i am trying to fit all the puzzle pieces together, and see how i can reinvent myself, to have a little more polish and authority, without looking too serious or boring.

I think style evolution happens naturally as we follow trends and new styles each season, and as we age..
Only Now ,.... and Thank GOODNESS for Angie ..I am not haphazardly buying things up, and going in the WRONG direction. Thank You Angie!!

I am so much more well informed, and know what my shape is and how to dress it. And I am so much more apt to try something new.
I think Angie is a master at her craft and steering each one of us in our own special direction...just not enough of her to go around.:)

I bet each and everyone of us has recieved a compliment regarding something we picked up from here...be it something we wore, color combo, etc. I know I have taken an idea directly from here and applied it....sometimes the response makes my day:)

Am I enjoying my style evolution? Well I thought that I was not catching on like I should be and that was not enjoyable. When I spent a day with you in person Angie, I cannot even say why but somehow I got from that day a more clear vision of my style. I think finding a few key elements to my wardrobe brought together what I already had in my closet. Some gaps were filled that were holding me back. Now I am very excited about the future of my style evolution and I feel I am on the verge of getting a good handle on how I would describe my style.
I definately would have given up if it weren't for YLF.

Oh yes, I completely feel that way Laura! My hair, for example, I would never have imagined getting a short haircut either. My younger sister got her hair cut short about two years ago and I instantly thought it wouldn't suit me and I'll look way too young. Since joining YLF, my perspective has changed and I now think 'nothing ventured, nothing gained'. I really think that this thought is central to the ethos of YLF, rather than the restricting rules set by WNTW and other fashion experts.

The other way that YLF has changed me is that I have a better command of the basics of style as well- PPL, body shape, good bras, colour coordination, etc. They are two competing things to learn- the classic elements of style and then the courage to try something new.

I also am completely loving my style transformation. I have discovered what impression I would like to send out with my clothes and how to do that with a small wardrobe of clothes and tight budget. I feel more confident and more like me- as in I used to feel awkward if I tried a new trend but now I know how to give it my own personal twist to make it unique rather than like everyone else's version of it.

Great topic, Laura.

After many, many years of reaching for clothes to simply cover my body ("here's a top, here's a bottom- done") I am having so much FUN finding clothes and outfits that flatter me. I never realized how much I could enjoy the aesthetic part- lovely fabric, the perfect drape... sends me over the moon.

One thing I've really loved- the creative aspect of putting together pieces. Angie has opened my eyes to the "art" of dressing. And accessories! I've never been able to "do" accessories, and it's a blast to try these out. Sometimes I feel like a kid in a candy store. I can't afford to run out and buy everything I want, but it's fun to figure out what I need for my style, and then figure out ways of getting it that are budget friendly.

I'm LOVING my style evolutions! It's great to see someone in something and think "i could try that" rather than automatically thinking it's too trendy/ edgy/ wouldn't suit me.

I was thinking about this while shopping this morning. WNTW seem to give a list of things you can and can't wear. Where as here we get a license to try everthing and anything. It's just a case of hunting for the right piece that flatters rather than "you're a pear you can't wear that" x

Pre-YLF, I would watch WNTW (US version) a lot and really took what I saw to heart, aside from the shoe business. I think this caused me to bypass a lot of trends and dress a lot more conservatively and "older" than was necessary. I looked like I came out of the same sausage machine as all the WNTW "afters," other than the ridiculous shoes. It meant avoiding a lot of trends that I really loved and ached to wear but thought I was too old for, or that it was unflattering or inappropriate--even though I suspected otherwise. Basically, I was going against my own instincts because I just didn't know any better. I also spent a LOT more because I always heard "price = quality." I really had no right to spend so much money then, but I thought my clothes were an "investment"...and of course a few years later, I can't even get them past my butt.

Now I know that much as I love Stacey and Clinton on a personal level (well, not that I know them, but they seem like fun people to be with), I disagree with them on a lot of points. I kind of feel like Angie has freed my style spirit in many ways. I definitely would not have tried leggings, graphic T's, volume, skinnies, tunics, moto jackets, or anything remotely "trendy" without YLF. Trendy has always been a part of my style persona, but I suppressed it thinking it wasn't appropriate anymore. Now I know it's never going to be inappropriate at any age as long as I'm always discriminating about what works on me and what doesn't.

Losing weight has required me to change my wardrobe much more than I normally would in that length of time. It's funny, but Angie just said something about me looking edgier, and it's not something new, but rather something that I am getting back to. I'm finally starting to feel like I have managed to grow up and refine the style that I had in college, which I had lost for some years.

Interesting topic! I've definitely undergone a style revolution too; I was already in the midst of one when I found YLF, and then of course losing the weight has accelerated that as well. So for me, it's been a combination of factors, but certainly my time on YLF has helped me figure out what it is I want to be seen as, and has given me the encouragement and reinforcement to try a lot of new things.

I have been actually putting together a photo essay of my monthly changes -- my best outfits of that month, to show not only my progression down the scale but also how my style has evolved (or not, as the case may be; I just dug up my favorite outfit of January which was TA-DA! a boyfriend sweater over a pencil skirt). I'm hoping to post in a couple of weeks -- when I get to goal.

Something Angie said on my thread about tunics made me think. Basically I had two tops, and Angie encouraged me to go with the edgier one, and it made sense. I've been here a year now, and YLF keeps helping me to push the envelope.

For example, last year at this time I had a blonde bob. Then I discovered YLF and cut my hair into a pixie cut. Now I've added an auburn stripe. And yesterday, I cropped it even shorter (I now have shorter hair than my sons and husband!). What next? I can't even imagine!

It's interesting. A year ago I NEVER would have imagined myself looking or dressing this way. I feel so much more like myself than I ever did. Wow. Is that how anyone else feels?
