Thanks everyone! I got them. I hope they fill my wardrobe hole. :-)

Deb, as it happens, the boutique I bought them from had them on sale too -- not as cheap as Amazon, but they were marked down by about eighty dollars. I try to support local and/or small retailers when I can, and I also prefer to walk home with the bag in hand, because then there are no surprises (manufacturer's defects etc). I would have paid full price these boots though, so the post-Christmas markdown was just a bonus. (Everything everywhere seems to be marked down at the moment!).

Suz, that's a mid-height heel for me. A well-balanced shoe can have up to a 2.5" heel (especially a block heel, like this one) and pose no problems -- but any higher than that, and my feet will eventually get sore if I walk a distance. Actually, 2.5" is the magic heel height -- it gives me just enough lift to wear knee-length coats well, but is low enough to be walking-all-day comfy. This is important, because if I'm walking all day, I've probably got a coat on, and most of my coats are at or just above the knee!

Rae -- good to hear you like the brand. I am hoping these will be super useful -- like the perfect plain black tee shirt!

Ariadne -- I know! This seems to be true for most things that have minimalist design -- not just footwear. It's all in the fabric, the stitching and the design itself, and I guess all those things cost money. (Thanks for the pm, btw -- I will get back to you when I've got more time).

If the Amazon ones are much cheaper, you could always order to one of the parcel receivers in Point Roberts... we use TSB.

Very nice. I have the Mars booties by Rachel Comey and they fill the same purpose (and are pricey--I got mine secondhand. Why are all the best plain booties the priciest?!

Casual? Lol those are my idea of moderately dressy! Or at least refined. To me, casual boots have thicker, rougher leather, or a lug sole, or at least thicker treads.

And yes, they are very, very comfortable. I've tried on like six hundred pairs of short boots, and these ones win.

UmmLila, I see what you're saying -- but sometimes you just really need basics! I have lots and lots of footwear with 'personality'. I have no basic black short boots. (I used to, and I wore them so much they actually wore out). And I have been needing these for several years now. I'm always reaching for a pair of short black boots with chunky heels that I don't have.

Oh well. I still like them and they are a brand that's known for being comfortable. But you know if you like the other boots better you may find more ways to wear them than you think. I got some cream colored boots this fall on a whim and they turned out to make everything a teeny bit more interesting than my usual blacks.

Thanks, Firecracker! I really like them. And they are very, very comfy. I think they only reason I'm waffling is that there are several pairs of shoes and boots out there right now that I like more but that I really, truly don't need. ;-)

UmmLila, thanks for the tip -- but I'm in Canada, so shipping to and from Amazon.com is expensive. You can get some stuff on Amazon.ca, but not shoes or clothes.

I like the way they look. I have a pair of coclico sandals that are a few years old that I still like and have held up well.

I'm also a fan of local boutique shopping when possible, but I will mention that you could check them out from Amazon if only to test around the house. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KQ.....B00KQG9G8K

I can't see the photos all that well because they are small. But I have to say, if you found a pair of Coclico boots that meet your criteria, go for them. Most of the shoes and boots I see in that brand are just so gorgeous.

eta: I see them now. Just. so. fabulous. I think you can't go wrong.

Hi all,

I've been on the lookout for an understated pair of short black boots for a long time. My requirements are that they must have a mid-height, block heel yet be comfortable enough to walk for miles in, a pleasing toe shape, and nice, non-shiny leather. I think I've found the right ones, but they are not cheap and because it's a small boutique I can't return them, so I'm putting them up for your opinions. Normally I'm quite decisive with shoes, but I'm not so good at committing to very plain ones -- yet I'm often reaching for a pair of boots that fit the above description, and they are not there! The brand is Coclico, and the model is called 'Adrienne'. I think they will go with bootcut pants as well as skinny pants, and probably with skirts, too. I specifically need them to wear with wider leg styles, because although I have a few pairs of black boots that are high enough, the heels are the wrong shape. I only like bootcut/flared pants with thick heels.

Also, on a side note: I CANNOT shop for shoes online because I need to physically see and touch the leather! These boots are a good example why. With something as simple as this boot, the leather makes all the difference. These are beautiful quality, soft and matte.
