How true, Angie!

I think we have all seen it here on the forum -- when there are split opinions on posts asking for advice.

It's what makes the world interesting and colorful!!

Once a director in IT who loves stylish clothing was wearing some high pumps and a woman wearing crocs (yes, to work - in IT) got in the elevator with her. On the way up to their respective floors the croc-lady said, "I don't know how you can wear those" (referring to pump-lady's shoes). Pump-lady replied, "I don't know how you can wear THOSE!"

That's pretty much how I feel about crocs, too, esp. at work!

The lovely thing is, there's always room to voice a difference of opinion on this Forum. People may mock "gasp!" or teasingly question your sanity, but nobody shouts each other down or criticizes each other's taste. And people are open-minded too and will even try new things they never dreamed possible for themselves before. Seriously, I wouldn't be wearing skinny belts, yellow shoes, or skirts and dresses to work if Angie and the rest of you hadn't slowly worked your convincing magic on me over time!

I think I was the one that said I hated some of your loves, Angie, sorry about that! I appreciate others' aesthetics even (especially?) when they don't match mine.

I tend to have a few different categories of things I don't like - some are things I've just seen a lot of recently and want a change (this is how I interpreted the original question), some are things I personally can't wear but appreciate on others, and some I just don't get. I seem to be particularly picky about the proportions on shoes, and some of them just strike me as ugly no matter who wears them or how they're styled. *shrug*

I think it's always good practice to separate the person from their clothes; in the end, clothes may reflect your taste and personality, or they may not - plenty of people dress horribly and are wonderful people, and vice versa.

And how very true Angie. I actually love all the contrasting opinions and the way other people can wear something with style and pizzazz that doesn't work for me/I'm not particularly fond of at all.

And this is also why it's important not to take offense when someone else says she'd rather crawl through mud than wear something that you wear all the time and think is super fab.

I wear Uggs. In the winter. Around the house. And yes, outside the house. For me, they're a good (fantastic) solution to a variety of problems, and, IMNSHO, they look fine (also IMNSHO, they look bizarre in the summer with bare legs and floaty sundresses). So they work for me and everybody else hates them. No problem :-).

Julie, I love pastels on other people. They have a very soft and pretty look. With my coloring and personal style they are a bad idea, but for you they are perfection. I love how you look in pale blues and peaches. Just lovely.

I find it very interesting what others love and hate. Sometimes, if I see a lot of loves for something I don't like I will give it a try just because others like it. It's a way for me to get out of my comfort zone.

Oh, absolutely! It's why I often shudder when I see insulting terms used to describe certain pieces or looks; you never know when the item you dub as "old lady wear" will be beloved by another forum member. :)

It can make asking for outfit feedback a little overwhelming at times, too; everyone will take such a different approach to a piece, after a while you have to either figure out who has similar taste to you and give their opinion a little more weight, or listen to your gut and go with your own choice. I remember when I first started on this forum that being one of the hardest things to learn for myself.

But it is just FASCINATING to see all the different preferences come out when you do ask, and it's pretty cool to see what bit of something will get picked up by whom.

Oh, yes.

I love maxi skirts and dresses. I love torn jeans. I love ultra high heels. I love wide flared legs. I love Helena Bonham Carter.

I hate skinnies. Uggs. Crocs. Rubber flip-flops. Boat shoes. Mullet dresses. Jumpsuits. Gladiator sandals. Harem pants. Neon colours. Animal prints.

By "hate", I mean that I'd rather wear slippers, sweatpants and an old T-shirt instead of any item from my list. Nevertheless, I can appreciate a stylish outfit that contains those items (ok, maybe not Crocs, but I can't imagine "stylish" and "Crocs" together).

This is a great point and a good reminder to anyone in the fashion industry who might be reading re. WHY it's always a great idea to have many, many options available for women to buy. Even when skinny jeans or puffed sleeves are trendy, there will be a significant minority who doesn't want to wear them.

I love having long hair but want the trend to end in large part because I'm tired of so many women having "my look"... and doing "my look" better than I can : ) Also, I think variety is the spice of life and when I open a magazine and 95% of the celebs inside have the same hair, I get a bit bored even if I think they look perfectly nice. So, my trend thread wasn't just about things we hated so much we wanted them to disappear but also about styles that had been around so long we're itching to try something new... or to have OTHERS try something new.

I think it's great that people are attracted to different things!
There are plenty of styles that I am not interested in wearing, but I don't hate them, and I am often interested in seeing them on others. Some outfits can project an image that I would not want to project myself, in which case I might have a stronger reaction, albeit not even close to loathing

While there are certain looks my eyes really haven't adjusted to (and some things that are just bad, like butt slogans and jelly sandals), I think I'm more particular about certain trends not being right for certain people rather than saying that the trend is bad in general, and that goes for most of the things that are in the category of "your likes are another person's loathes". For example, a very curvy friend of mine (27 years old) likes wearing leggings with tops that just come a few inches under her butt, especially this one rather clingy sweater...I like the leggings and tunic top trend now, but I think the clingy not too long sweater+legging look is not that good on her body type, but it might be better on a more rectangular person on whom the sweater wouldn't cling as much.

I find this fascinating! Read Mac's thread to get your head around what I mean:

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-would-end

Some of my loves: volume, scrunched skinnies, ballet flats, slouchy tapered pants - are loathed by others. And my loathes like casual maxi dresses are loved by others.

We all see different things. Beauty lies in the eye of the belholder - or more cynically, there is no accounting for taste!

No real point to this thread - just that I find it fascinating. Fashion and style is a very subjective thing.
