Black, fabric, with wheels, I would say. Anything colored gets dingy after awhile.

A suitcase that was hugely practical over the past few years was a jumbo-size I borrowed from my parents. Larger than the average checked bag. This is perfect for lugging Christmas gifts home along with your original belongings (a teapot, a puzzle, a couple sweaters, some colored pencils, etc.)

I use a 20-year-old, carry-on size travel backpack from eBags for everything- business travel, nearly two weeks in Greece, China, and most recently London. Sometimes I think I should upgrade, but every time I look at anything with wheels I'm dismayed with the amount of space I'd be giving up for the handle. (And nodding along with Carla- I do lift weights to ensure that I can still get it in and out of the overhead. At the point I can't do that, I'll switch to checking luggage.)

I have tried some trendier hard-sided luggage, but I keep returning to my Travel Pro pieces. The spinner wheels are fabulous, and they fit so much. I am definitely not a carry-on person. I also rely on packing cubes, not for compression but for organization. I also invested recently in silicone stashed bags that I’m going to try instead of ziplocs for toiletries.

We have both Travelpro and Samsonite, both with four wheel swivel bases and they have been very durable and easy to use as carryons.

However, DS recently introduced us to the motorized suitcase. It’s not anything we would purchase but fun to watch…. :-)

Well, I’m like you, Carla—a small carryon and a Le Pliage tote are enough for a 4-week trip to London and Paris, with time for some coastal walks/hikes in the Sussex and Normandy. I really dislike being hampered by luggage when I’m flying or traveling from city to city.

My current 2-wheel carryon is an 12 year-old Osprey Ozone which weighs a bit over 4 lb before I pack anything inside. I try to keep the packed weight to 15 lb. or less because I find it tiring to haul more weight. The case fits easily into an overhead bin even on European discount carriers. Now that I’m in my mid-seventies, I suspect it will outlast me!

I always travel with 2 Le Pliage bags—one backpack https://www.nordstrom.com/s/lo.....ck/3023122

and one large tote size.

https://www.nordstrom.com/s/lo.....t&

In airports and on planes, I pop the backpack inside the tote along with my raincoat/sweater/travel necessities for my “personal” item. When I’m more stationary, I use the backpack as my hand bag and the tote to carry parcels, groceries, etc. With this system, I can easily spend a day sightseeing or walking if I check out in the morning and then fly out 10-12 hours later. My luggage is unobtrusive enough to let me sit in a concert hall or a restaurant.

Here’s the most recent version of my Osprey: https://www.osprey.com/ca/en/p.....2_550.html

I know that most of the forum members prefer to travel with larger suitcases, but, after 5 traveling decades, I’ve come to the realization the less I haul around with me, the more enjoyable the trip. Now that I’m a senior, I doubt I’d still be travelling if I had to haul around heavy suitcases by myself—my hips, knees, and back would give out in a couple of days.

Oh, and another insight—high quality fabrics make for easier packing. Cashmere, fine-staple cottons and merino wools, silk, and technical fabrics fold into VERY small packages, and look far more presentable when shaken out and worn. These days my travel garments are quite a bit more pricey than many of my regular items. I may travel with fewer items, but every piece needs to pull its weight in terms of comfort, suitability, and style.

I struggle to only take carry on - I went away for three nights recently and although my bag size was carry on appropriate the weight was over (7kg is the allowed weight). I wore my boots but had hiking shoes and sneakers as well as a laptop.

I have a big robust soft bag and a two hard cases - depends on the trip as to which is best - the soft bag we took on the outback adventure.

I must get some air tags!!

In the past I bought cheap suitcases that got all busted and broken on their first trip through the airport. No more! I still don’t want to spend a lot, but you get what you pay for, so I’ll be checking out some of the recommendations here.

@ unfrumped - I feel exactly like you do about managing my own luggage. The last time I helped someone, it was a very short woman who was probably half my age, but her bag was big/heavy and she was maybe 5ft 2in - so didn’t have the reach. I’m 5ft 7in. I volunteered that I lifted weights and could help her out, and she seemed grateful for the help.

My older bag was constructed in such a way that in a pinch I could slide it under the seat in front of me. I’m toying with going even smaller - like your aspirational bag!

Like Suz, I use Briggs and Riley, carryon size, in navy blue. I almost always check it, but I like having the option to carry it on if I need to. It's the only suitcase I have now, so whatever length trip I'm going on, I will pack so that I can fit everything in it. For an upcoming active vacation overseas, I'll bring my backpack as an underseat bag, with my hiking boots inside.

I got this bag a few years ago, to replace a red Victorinox bag that I loved and carried for almost 20 years. I'm hoping the Briggs & Riley lasts another 20 years; it may be the last suitcase I buy.

This is a good thread. It’s helping me think about my “ luggage capsule “.

I currently use a 2-wheel ( hard to get now) Ricardo carryon I got from TJMAXX. I use is for car and air. It’s not super lightweight I know- I plan to actually weigh it soon for reference. It can also becstuffed too full for airplane if not careful. Let alone maybe overseas requirements. It has an “ expansion zipper “ that I usually don’t use, kind of trying to reduce my tendency to over pack.

We are doing car travel now but I hope to resume air travel soon. For car travel it almost doesn’t matter because DH lugs the suitcases. I’m really wondering if I should just expand the thing and then put in some stuff I often put in a tote bag for “ in case” sometimes shoes, or swimsuit or something. To reduce, oh, need to go back to car. But still it makes it heavier.

If it turns out it’s more than ~ 7-8# empty, then I think I’ll shop for a new bag for air travel.

But, I have a smaller, maybe under max carryon bag with the 4 wheelies that I’ve never used, due to thinking it’s too small, when in fact I got it when imagining some short air trips to visit DD & grandkids when I only need the minimum casual wear, & can do laundry in needed, skip a hair dryer . It was “ aspirational “ , to practice packing more minimally! But then, COVID happened, and we didn’t fly, so it seemed unnecessarily restrictive.

Anyways, I think I’ll haul it down and weigh& measure for reference & maybe “ practice pack”.

The thing is, I’m still trying to maintain my strength & do my own toting, including being able to hoist bag up to overhead bins, but it’s interesting how often some guy reached out to do it for me, because I did have to really “ oomph” it up or down. Not effortless!
What’s funny about that is, no effort, no maintenance, let alone gain!

The crowded aisles and impatient passengers is a big part of it— any delay or 1,2,3…hoist! that should just be part of using your muscles, gets people frustrated, or maybe worried.

My point is that it would take a VERY light and compact bag for me to LOOK effortless hoisting it and shoving it in the bin. Probably impractically so.

Mr. SF and I travel primarily by car these days. I do have the Air Canada suitcase to carry on that you had, Carla. Mr. SF has used that when he has flown recently. It has lasted a long time and holds quite a bit.
Now, we have two huge suitcases from Walmart. We travel for months at a time. They are light, and we don't take them out of the car until we reach our destination or if we need to change our clothes in our smaller bags.
We have small bags on the road and only stay at places for a night or two. I have two large tote bags. One is from the early 90s, and the other is about ten years old.
Garth has his bag. I got it from Walmart. It's nothing special, but it does what it needs to do.

My travel case requisites may be slight unusual as I travel quite often for few days and need to keep costs down. I resorted to a cabin bag which can be placed under the seat (size 40*20*25 cm) and it covers all my needs but it's definitely not glamourous!

I've flown a lot, Carla, and checked luggage on most of my flights if trips were more than a day or two. Only once (during an ice storm) was a bag delayed. Not lost, but delayed. I was at home, so it didn't matter all that much.

Like cat2, we have insurance on the credit card that would cover necessities if a bag did go missing.

My stepdaughter has had luggage go temporarily missing a couple of times, but it has always been found. Not without some inconvenience to her, for sure, but it wasn't a big emergency.

My usual bag is a hilariously old and tacky Jessica Simpson purple leopard carry-on. However, no one else ever picks it up by mistake, it holds a remarkable amount, has two outside zip pockets for scarves and books and such easy access items, and is light enough for me to hoist it into an overhead bin. An airline broke it once, and repaired it as good as new for free.

I am regularly tempted by new luggage, but I'm so fond of my un-glamorous leopard baby.

Great thread! Seeing everyone's favorite travel gear makes me want to hit the road :)

Toronto-based Heys luggage is my choice. I like my luggage with a touch of whimsy so here's my latest:

https://us.heys.com/products/t.....spinner-30

I recently ordered a MZ Wallace backpack for an upcoming work trip. High hopes for this one in terms of style, weight and functionality!

https://www.mzwallace.com/prod.....ack-deluxe

And to put people's minds at ease, the odds of having your bag mishandled are quite low. https://thepointsguy.com/news/.....port-2022/

We are big fans of traveling light, although for this summers teaching travel I did check my main bag (as I had 2 personal smaller carry on items --camera bag + laptop backpack for teaching) Luckily it arrived to my destination! However, a large group of 40+ students were not so lucky, their luggage missed the transfer and was left in Paris for 2 days...

I have used Eagle Creek for many years, super tough, great zippers and I have never had one fail. (We also are big Rick Steves fans)

We have 2 different styles, and currently mostly I use a wheeled carry on size bag that has hidden back-pack straps-for just in case--Ive had it for 10 years plus and after 4 european trips still shows no real wear--the Eagle Creek Adventure 21" wheeled backpack.

They have some current models that are similar, the Expanse, 2 wheel + backpack straps -a sleek design. there are also 4 wheel and no strap versions.

We used Eddie Bauer soft-sided luggage for years. It wears like iron and I still have mine and would recommend it, but we wanted something hard-sided with four wheels for this spring’s travel. After a lot of research, I ended up with the Solgaard Carry-On Closet that Suz linked above.

My qualifications were:
-small enough for inter-European flights
-four wheels
-hard-sided
-available in multiple non-black colors (hubs and I wanted the same brand but different colors to distinguish our bags)
-phone charging port

This bag is so neat! It has a pull-out shelving system that acted as organization and compression in one, eliminating the need for packing cubes and making unpacking a breeze even though we stayed only 1-3 nights in any given location. I always felt like I had easy access to everything I’d packed and loved being able to see all my clothes all the time. Second pic shows it in action on our last trip.

YES TO APPLE AIR TAGS!!!! We have them on all our keys.

People's suitcase needs are VERY different, so FWIW, here are our needs:

Extremely lightweight luggage is non-negotiable. That rules out hard cases no matter how pretty and robust they look. Must be hardy and weatherproof canvas that goes the distance.

Must have spinning wheels. IT IS SO MUCH EASIER to drag than regular wheels!!! And very kind to your wrists and arms.

Inside compartments must be unobtrusive so that you can pack a lot, and the most efficiently.

Must come in bright colours.

Must come in the MIDDLE size, so not a carry-on or the big size.

Not too expensive.

Have extremely good reviews.

We are on our third set of Travelpros - I think? They last about 8 to 10 years with extensive international travel. They get beaten up a LOT in all sorts of weather, and they hold up very impressively.

Medium CHECKED. 25 inches. Weighs less than 7 pounds!

https://www.amazon.com/Travelp.....=sr_1_1_ss

Most flight crew use Travelpro. Best rated luggage in the NY TIMES too.

An aside:

One hint for those who check bags (no way we could have done that Europe trip we just did with only a carry-on!) and have any fears of losing luggage: Apple AirTags! Came in handy when my husband’s bag got mysteriously put to the side at Dulles last month after we arrived home. I keep one in my laptop bag and camera bag too.

My luggage is a hodgepodge of thrift finds and hand me downs, but I haven't been able to travel much in years, so hasn't been a priority. There are easily a half dozen random suitcases in the garage.

I do need to address it soon cause we're hoping to travel for DHs PhD graduation, and will have to cart around his medival robe!

DH and I have always used just one checked bag, to minimize fees, and done laundry in our travels. When I went to my dad's last spring, a carry on was fine.
Does having 4 wheels on the bottom make a huge difference?

Kipling soft sided wheeled luggage. Mine is sage green, husband’s is navy. I have a small wheeled carry-on and a large wheeled check-in bag. Used for business travel, I carried large amounts of paper materials which were very heavy, and they held up well. Expandable by zipping out a few more inches of depth. Snap-in toiletries bags. Light-weight. Easy to clean.
Mostly use 2 large structured nylon totes now, think IKEA size bags, for running in and out of hotel rooms with overnight clothes taken from a big suitcase, one of which is the all important, dedicated, coffee maker and snacks tote. That works very well for car and even RV travel.
I go very lightweight with a small carry-on duffle, also Kipling, for overnights or weekends.
We used to live near a mall with a Kipling store, with great sales!

I’m really happy with a set of *it* ‘world’s lightest luggage.’ After years of weekly plane travel, I came to require my luggage be as light possible. So it’s always soft and I don’t bother to put locks on. Actually, after years of weekly travel and when I was still doing it, I gave up on pretty, expensive luggage and just used $20 Walmart cases. There’s a level of luggage use where quality means nothing. And I second the luggage belt.

It is more likely since the pandemic, but I have flown to Thailand and to Canada this year with checked suitcases and luggage has not gone astray. Especially for the wedding trip but also for 2 weeks in Thailand I couldn’t have managed without a suitcase.

Samsonite is the brand that I buy, I have a Samsonite c-lite spinner case that has served me well for many years, they come in different sizes, including a size that works for carryon. I check my bag unless on a very short trip. I customise my red case with stickers and a vibrant luggage belt. No one will accidentally grab my case - it really stands out from the crowd. I can remember as a child my brother's suitcase busted and all his clothing was scattered on the conveyor belt, it made me always put a luggage belt on my cases to minimize that.

My hand luggage is a Porter backpack and handbag. I use Angie's trick to store my handbag in a fabric storage bag when on the plane.

30 years of extensive business travel; the only time my checked bag went astray was when another passenger took the wrong bag. My husband did have a bag sent to Detroit rather than with us to Paris, but our credit card had delayed baggage insurance that paid enough to cover a trip to H&M for essentials.
