One slip on for the airport and around, two super comfortable and tested for walking around - in my case probably not a sneaker but flat boots in winter or sandals in summer.

Well for my upcoming Paris trip - lots of walking in 0-12 C temps -
I have decided on off-white leather converse (my version of the popular Joseph Siebel sneakers), tall shaft flat booties, and a pair of loafers. All are slip-on - I am modifying the converse with Xpand laces.

I totally understand starting your trip capsule from the footwear. My picks are based on the assumption it’ll be cold enough to need socks and sometimes rainy, but too warm for any of my lined boots or sneakers. I also wanted both comfort and a bit of refinement for a sophisticated European city. Not expecting to look like a Parisian, but also don’t want to look totally clueless!

Comfortable for lots of walking, light weight for luggage, appropriate for your activities and weather. Sometimes snow boots are more appropriate than sandals, think of walking on uneven pavement and cobblestones. Are you going to a wedding or funeral, reunion, award ceremony, take part in a sport? I look for light weight flat shoes that can take damp weather. I wear my heaviest pair traveling. Sometimes those are low boots. Be sure they can be dressed up or down, and will work will all or most of your wardrobe. Most of all have fun! I also look for light weight shoes that are easy on and off, and can be dressed up and down. Will they be ok for tromping about a city or town yet can be worn to a lunch or to dinner with live music. Be sure you can afford to lose them or have them taken outside a temple. Take at least 2 pair to give your feet a rest and so your will not travel though a jungle barefoot ( don't ask how I know this.). I find a dark metallic is an excellent neutral for travel.

Depending on expected weather, planned activities, and color palette of the clothes that I'm taking, I choose three or four pair from my collection of Bass Weejuns loafers, Oliver Cabell driving shoes, Oliver Cabell mules, Birkenstocks sandals, Thursday Boot boots, Ecco and Tretorn sneakers, Eddie Bauer K 6 hiking boots, and occasionally J Crew ballet flats. And I have one pair of Cole Haan Grand lace up oxfords that are great for travel. I've travelled once with Blundstones, but my Thursday Boots are dressier, and my K 6 hikers are more comfortable than my Blundstones.

It would have to be my Ecco hightops, black or white or even both. They're good in a wide range of weather, look good with dresses or jeans, and are wildly comfortable. Depending on the season, I'll add my silver faux birks or my gray Ugg sneaker boots.

I am getting sooo bored with them but nothing I own is as dependable!

Putting together a four day capsule for tricky spring weather right now.
Deep green suede Tretorn sneakers, dark green Keen sandals that are for water and hiking, and a pair of tan Kyoto Birks, along with thin and thick socks to pair as needed.
They will be going with jeans and capris, no dresses or skirts. So casual. And long periods on my feet, so always start with the shoes.
Would ditch the Birks if traveling carry on.
Have a great trip!

I travel at this time also. My go to if it is warm is a red converse, black Arch sandal or printed Birk /Mephisto and a print Gucci loafer or black ballet flat. I'll let the converse do the heavy lifting during the day especially if it is wet.

We travel abroad with carryon only. It might be nice in London in May. I’d bring some white sneakers, black flat leather sandals, and either leather flats or a flat ankle boot in black. You could wear the boots on the plane to save room in your suitcase.
This combination has served me well in October, April, and July.

The advantage of having a limited footwear capsule because of problem feet is that I have very few choices for packing. I am in Florida for two months, and I brought:
Two pairs of Finn Comfort Sneakers - one black and one blue
One pair of Finn Comfort Sandals - tan
One pair of Birks Arizona - brown

Florida is very casual. I debated bringing my big buckle Birks for dressy occasions but didn't. It was the right decision.

I wore my black Saute Mouton winter boots for part of the trip down.

I have been in Florida for a month and am happy with the shoes I brought.

For the actual flight/train ride etc., I go for either sneakers or very comfy low-heeled shoes, booties or loafers, depending on season. To pack, in general I go for low-heeled shoes I can walk a lot in - booties, sneakers, or sandals with a bit of platform/lift, similar to Suz's example above. Depending on the actual trip, I may pack a fancier third pair for evening.

UK in May, correct? (The where and when are crucial bits of info...also, the activities. City walking different from hiking. Etc.)

Anyway...if I were heading to the UK in May (and how I wish I were!!!) I would bring one pair of Ecco Soft sneakers (white or silver, with slim Superfeet insole because I can't wear them otherwise.) Mr. Suz and I would probably be heading out for meals so I would also want a slightly dressier shoe -- some type of dressy-ish flat or low heel. It is awfully hard for me to find this type of footwear though, and I don't currently own such a shoe, unless you count my chunky loafers, which don't seem dressy to me -- so I am not sure where I'd look or what I'd seek. Possibly something from Eileen Fisher, since her shoes have worked for me. Possibly something at Ecco or a Franco Sarto. Possibly Sofft, though those are harder to source in Canada.

If anticipating rain then I would probably want a darker shoe also, although I wore my silver Eccos in POURING rainstorms last May in Ontario (real deluges, walking in them for ages) and although they got awfully squelchy and took a while to dry out, they weathered it all pretty darn well. But I think the possibility of serious rain means you need to have more than one pair of shoes with you, for sure.

ETA if travelling in cooler weather, I would definitely bring/ wear a boot. If travelling in hot weather, sandals for sure! In my case, probably my EF's.

For hot weather, Birkies, for temperate, Ecco sneakers, for cold or wet, Blondos! In England Carla I got through everything for the week with just my Blondos, including full days on foot around the city - but that was in March so you might have warmer weather when you're there?

Some years it was a pair of oxfords and a pair of loafers Right now I have a pair of knitted sporty oxfords and a pair of knitted Mary Janes from Cole Haan. I would take one or both.

Last summer I spent 3 weeks traveling with only carry on and brought only 2 pairs of shoes, Ecco soft 7 sneakers and Birkenstocks Madrid, both in silver. Also brought silver cross body bag and silver belt. It was extremely hot, so wore sneakers only on travel days between multiple destinations (Paris, London, Barcelona) and to Disneyland. My feet never complained even though I spent long days walking around. We didn’t have any dressy occasions, otherwise I would bring another pair of more dressy sandals. Also for Barcelona I could have used some waterproof flip flops for the beach and pool , but got covid instead so didn’t really need them.
