Amy, I so hear you on the frustration with the tissue-thin tees. Arrgh! I'm a big fan of Banana Republic v-neck tees (they also come in crewneck):

http://bananarepublic.gap.com/.....=608860032

I also REALLY love the fit and quality (they run small) of 3 Dots tees. They are nice and substantial:

http://www.zappos.com/three-do.....=shopstyle

I believe Angie has suggested Ann Taylor for those tees. I've been meaning to check them out, but am 40 min away from AT -_-

I like Old Navy and Target T's for layering because they fit snug-ly and aren't tissue thin. But I'll have to check out JCP too!

I'm another vote for the JCPenney St. John's Bay tees. Good quality, great price and lots of choices.

I like Target's and JCP's t-shirts. Target's are thinner, which I like for the cooling factor, but not see-thru.

Talbots and Ann Taylor also have nice t-shirts. I tried on some yesterday. The Talbots was especially nice in super soft Egyptian cotton and thin but not sheer and a very well made garment IMO. The color was wrong, otherwise it'd be in my closet now.

For ones I know I'm layering only I like Shade Tees - they are longer and stretchy and fit close (hence I don't wear them on their own). For ones I might also wear on their own I like Ann Taylor cotton modal ones (I only have the long sleeve, but they are quite soft and not clingy) or J Crew perfect fit (they have the best colors).

I've always been a fan of Gap's basic tees - they wash wash, don't fade and don't lose their shape. But I noticed this year they're a little bit thinner fabrication than they used to be.

I just bought two of the JCP St. John's V-necks for $7 each, and I'm thinking about going back for more. They are much more nicely constructed than equivalently priced Target Merona or Old Navy tees.

You might also have a look at LL Bean's double L rib shirts. Here is one of my favorite styles:
http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/63484?feat=rib|ll-SR0
These are sturdy 100% cotton and cut long enough for my long torso!

Basic black or white crewneck:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/pro.....Type=PDPZ1

(also available in navy as well).

Runs a bit large, so order a size smaller if you can. These are quite well-made, and thicker than the usual tees we've been seeing for awhile now.

Not a classic tee, but these elbow sleeved boatnecks are also quite nice:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/pro.....Type=PDPZ1

Extremely good deal? Check JC Penney for their St. John's Bay tees - very reasonable quality, especially for the price. They are *not* the super-tin tissue-weight tees, and you can often get them for as little as $5 a piece! Insane!

V-necks:

http://www.jcpenney.com/jcp/x6.....id=1d1ba41

Crewnecks:

http://www.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.....8;cmCatID=

3/4 sleeved v-neck tees:

http://www.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.....8;cmCatID=

Another crewneck style:

http://www.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.....8;cmCatID=

I really like the JNY tees, and some of the Ralph Lauren tees are quite nice too. Much better quality than the typical tees - worth the extra cost. That said - the St. John's Bay tees at JC Penney of all places are surprisingly good quality, especially for the price. It would be worth it to pop in there if you have a JCP nearby and try a few out, and then from then on - you can just order replacements/new colours online at your leisure. The JCP tees seem like $20-$30 tees, but are usually always less than $10 each. A very good deal. They don't look all that great online, but they're pretty nice tees.

Note: if you're smaller than a size 4, then most of these tees are going to be a bit on the larger side. All other sizes, size down for sure. If you think you're a medium, order a small etc.

I would like a couple of solid colored t-shirts for layering, but am not excited about the super-thin creations I've seen here and there. I want something opaque enough that my undergarments don't show through.

Suggestions most welcome!
