What an interesting thread. I don't know that I can think of anything since so much is "on trend" right now. I do have an aversion to maxis.

Wow. This was a GREAT read.

Aida, Jules and Debs, I hear you. You'll find all looks represented if you look hard enough. But there's always something that you love that is less loved by others (in the fashion world or in your environment) - or not very on trend. That's the stuff I am after.

Inge, well OF COURSE your list matches mine :). Love the sound of your neon cami!

Krish, I like to match patterns and colour blocks like they did in the '50s and '60s.

This is a very fun thread. I enjoyed reading everyone's comments and preferences.

Angie, please explain to me, what do you mean by "Matchy-matchy. Soft" (soft?)

Here are my "against the grain" preferences:

- High waisted, or higher waisted pants and jeans.

- Nylons, sometimes.

- Wearing a sports-bra under my clothes... some days (so comfortable!).

- Sun hats

- Some heel. I live in a very relaxed city, where no one seems to wear any heel at all, let alone any feminine shoe. So my wearing heels make me really feel like I'm against the current.

Funny, Angie, I recently bought a neon yellow cami because I really needed some neon in my closet:-)
Your list matches mine.

Plus, I'm also so very much into long length (at least mid-thigh, but love them even longer) dressy woven tunics over dressy slim-fitting trousers. It's a look we saw in the runway shows for Fall 2012, but I'm not seeing it irl yet.

Also: I know midis are supposed to be a big trend, and I love wearing mine, but I still see so many people wearing above the knee (often quite short) skirts and dresses, so at the moment it doesn't feel as if I'm wearing a trend:-)

to the extent that i can, without looking dated, i like to be slightly out of sync with "fashion". e.g. wore "statement necklaces since college, gave them a rest during the peak of the trend. bringing them back out as "everyone" moves to the arm party--my arms will have to stay at home because i can not abide by clanging/banging bracelets. i move around too much!

got some peplum in 2009, added a jacket recently, but will wear these sparingly until peplum cools off. will be skipping the rest of the "hippy" bunch.

etc etc etc...

1. Red lipstick. Whatever the trend, I will still wear red lipstick.
2. Pointy flats. If I can find more, I will buy them.
3. White and black outfits. White buttoned up top with black pants and black oxfords.
4. Straight leg jeans or pants. I still wear the skinnies though.
5. Ankle length jeans and pants. I have to show a little skin sometimes even though it's the ankle. LOL!!

Higher rise jeans and no flowey/drapey tops or dresses because they always make me look dumpy. I've never liked (or bought) cardies because I need more shoulder structure so I'm glad jackets are back!

Also, I wear a lot of black (on the bottom) and charcoal all year 'round and have never felt the urge to wear brighter colors in spring and summer. Maybe it is because my winters are mild and summers are rarely hot.

Well, in my world most ladies are wearing skinny pants these days, so my wide leg trousers are a big different from the norm (although not "off trend"...I think if you wear ANYTHING with confidence ppl will think it's "on trend" no matter what!)

Fascinating read! I find this difficult as others have said because so many trends seem to be represented in one or another out and about.

For me maybe:

Suits - I am really getting into them again
Flat shoes
Layering - as in long drapey layers - its a look I love and enjoy... I dont know if it's current?

Erm...i'm kind of going blank. I embrace a lot of trends and tend to shy away from things that i think aren't currently in style...

maybe there's things i do wear that aren't "in" that i don't realize? Like Aida i think it's hard for me to say because i feel like there are so many styles out there it's hard for me to distinctly point and say, "that's out."?

I had to read the comments to realize which of my choices are trendy or not! Flats and oxfords for sure - but oxfords are trendy right? I mainly prefer skinny jeans but my all time favorites have a bootcut and I wear them too. My main act of defiance is always wearing a hat outdoors in a culture where hats have a very specific meaning, which does not apply to me.

Mmm I'm also feeling like there are so many styles currently represented that it's hard to say, and Angie as you've pointed out previously trends are sticking around longer. I don't feel like my style preferences distinctly go against current preferences, but I am certainly passing on the trends that I'm not into. There are just SO MANY trends that it's easier to be trendy without looking like the next gal who's also trendy.

I'm also liking matchy matchy and tops the same color as cardies or jackets but with a different texture.

Cardigans? I have just discovered them, right when the world seems to be moving on to blazers. I do like the option of having both blazers and cardis in my wardrobe, with cardis for a lighter, flowier layers and blazers when I want to smarten up a look.

I also bat for team flats no matter what. I cannot do high heels, trendy as they may be.

This is a very hard question to answer because, as Angie has said in the past, almost all looks are represented at some level by designers and retailers over a season.

I think I would be safe to say handbags, I love a nice quality, leather, midsize handbag and no matter how many magazine editors scream the slouchy oversized clutch or waist length Chanel cross body bag are the in things I refuse to be swayed.

Big clunky shoes with lower, chunky heels.

My short list:
Flares and boot cut jeans, preferred over skinnies.
Small scale jewelry.
I'm back on the cardigan wagon.

Sign me up as as abnormal, too. Like others, I prefer boot cuts rather than skinnies, and short dresses rather than long. And like a couple of others have mentioned, I wear the two, together. But, I'm really bad because I do it all the time.

I also wear boots all year round, so I'm definitely abnormal one, if not three, seasons.

I think skinnies tucked into tall boots has been waaaaaaaaaay overdone, and has hopefully seen its day. I confess to being one of the ones who used to do that all the time, too.

Hurray for boot cuts worn down over those sexy tall boots. I wear sexy lingerie, too, but I don't tuck my jeans into them, either. I've had people tell me it's a waste of nice boots to wear them under, but I know they are are there, my boyfriend knows, and the occassional lucky observer gets a peek when I go to sit down or move a certain way.

So, call the guys in the white coats to come fit me for the canvas sport coat with the sleeves in the back. My preferences are abnormal and I love it.

Oooh, can I get that above mentioned sport coat to go with my dress?

Saying, "Hi.", from "The Home"

@ Mo: I'm with you on how to color match. I do think I look more "pulled together" when I repeat a color elsewhere... say, in an accessory such as a handbag. I also like wearing shoes that either match whatever color the bottom of my pants or skirt is, or shoes that are a color that blends with or matches my hair color.

@ christieanne: I plan to keep wearing the cuts that look best on my body. It's stupid to make women think they should ditch their trouser or boot-cut jeans and only wear skinny jeans. That's what the fashionistas do, though. They try to make us feel that if we don't wear what's up-to-the-minute trendy, we don't have an up-to-date look. Whenever I try to wear a trend that doesn't suit me or my body type, I end up looking like a fashion victim. That's NOT the impression I want people to have of me.

If they existed, I would still buy jumpers. (The U.S. version: A-line, sleeveless, scoop neck& back designed to be worn over shirts or T-necks & tights.) Over the years I've had them in every fabrication from suede to corduroy & in beautiful colors & black. They've probably been my favorite type of clothing ever.

Boot cut denim and trouser jeans. I think the flip towards skinnies has gone overboard. I like all denim cuts and the versatility of wearing multiple great styles. My pet peeve is reading a fashion blog when the blogger apologizes for wearing a non-skinny jean.

Not wearing rope edged wedges - my DH has such an aversion to them that it just isn't worthwhile for me to wear them (although I usually don't follow what he says in fashion at all) just to keep the peace And there are many options out there.
