An LLBean red wool overcoat, classic single button style, with an extra layer of insulation. Found at a thrift store a few summers ago, perfect fit, clearly never worn because there were paper covers on a few buttons. $10. It's not a coat I wear every day in winter (although I could) but it's nice to have a coat in a bright color for our long cold winters and for that price it had my name all over it.

Can't get the find to work but here is a link

http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop.....e_0=Molten red

Thrift stores within an hour (or less) of the LLBean "mother ship" in Freeport Maine often have lots of LLbean items because the locals buy and donate them and of course they last forever.

Oh, one more: My coral/white circus stripe fake scuba full-skirted skirt comes from Rainbow (next to Ross, next to the petstore). I don't think there's anything over $20 at Rainbow. I like to wear this skirt on Sundays. It's frankly more wearable than I really secretly thought it would be.

I bought second hand shorts last year (Glassons brand) for $4 which were well worn, along with a new striped Dotti tee for $10. Both held up well for one season, and the tee will last a full second season I believe. The shorts got some paint on them so will become gardening, home shorts.....which sadly means I will need to get some new ones. UGh- I prefer swimsuit shopping!

BC, thanks for the tip about umbrellas at Walmart. The closest Walmart is inconveniently far, so I'm rarely there, but if I'm in that direction for something else, I will remember! A back-up would be nice!

Cococat, I cut the tags off of everything, high or low. I am not a brand person as much as a quality person. I love my eXilaration PJ's as much as my Jason Wu dress. If they fit and wear well they live in my closet next to each other and are equals.

I've only now had a chance to come back to this thread and wow, I'm loving all of the low end treasures!

Angie, thanks for your high-low blog post. I really enjoyed it and I loved to hear that a lot of us dress this way. One thing I'm going to admit to....I usually cut the tags off my Kmart, Target and similar purchases because I fear that I'm subconsciously influenced by labels. Does anyone else do this?

I really love my Target purses. They last years for me. My number one all time Target purse is probably the one I use to walk Lilypup daily. I wear it around my waist (it's really a shoulder purse) and hook the leash to it. Admittedly Lilypup is not puller, but still lots of strain.

Next on my list is a pair of high waisted fake skinnies. Real cheapies. I parcel out wears on these because I love them so much and they were a one off find.

My fave sweaters come from F21. They aren't forever sweaters, haha, pilling up eventually - but they are always soft and warm and fit the bill style wise.

Oh, and my fake drugstore crocs really hold up like iron. I wear those at the bakery and Lilypuppo's after work walk.

It is confusing to me because some of my most valued and valuable things were thrifted for $2. My best buys from lower end stores have been from the Gap and Zara on sale. I am sure I would find more things at Target or Costco if I lived near either.

A grey wool-blend 3/4 length duffle coat from NY&Co. that cost about $35 on sale 6 years or so ago.I I've heard that you're supposed to go with quality on outerwear, but I live in Georgia (where it passed 100 degrees today) and only need a heavy coat a few weeks of the year. I wouldn't spend much on coats or formal wear since I don't wear either very often.

Walmart does sell great umbrellas, Totes. I got one for my son when he lived in Memphis. It rains a lot there!

My best low cost items were probably thrifted. I've bought a lot of vintage Coach bags, but this duffle was my first thrifted one, and one of the best. I think I paid around $25. The leather is fab.

Low end for me faves:

1. Three silver toned skinny bangle bracelets made by a local artist. Cost maybe $30 for all three. I wear them every day. I have owned them for two years now. They're strong, don't tarnish or react. They are nicely sized for my small wrists. They mix well with my gold bangles. They don't look cheap.

2. Birkenstock Floridas - maybe not true low end, but I use them in the summer as house shoes and I have a pair that is 10 years old, so they last a long time making the CPW minimal. Maybe fractions of a penny?

3. A BCBG wrap dress purchased at an outlet store.

4. My PJ's and an unbranded umbrella from Target. i haven't seen much talk about umbrellas on the forum, but they are a big part of my life. I carry one every day when the temperature is above freezing. I like the kind with a push button for both unfolding. My current umbrella has lasted an unusually long time, I will be sad when the wind finally bends it out of shape or pulls it apart.

Possibly my oldest existing top, a 3/4 sleeve cream and pale orange stripe tshirt, nice thin knit, has always fit me even at weight range ends. It's more than 10 years old? I got it off the clearance rack at American Eagle, if I remember correctly, when my daughters still shopped there in college. They are now in their mid 30's. Since we were pretty broke then (from college tuition), I might have paid $6-8 for it.

I wear it every year in spring and fall, several times. It has never shown wear, pit stains, stretched out, or out of style. It matches my old orange fleece jacket (also a keeper) in the fall and olive military jacket in the spring. If it dies, I'll be sad to see it go.

Great $5 pants, silk pencil skirt, etc. from a local liquidation store that is no longer using the same business model. $5 shirt from Talbots Outlet.
Karen Scott printed shirts from Macys-maybe not stylish for most of the group, but I just bought one for $12 that will work with most of my bottoms. $3 lesportsac crossbody from a thrift store -perfect for my walks.

I am extremely hard on white t-shirts. My weekend running around outfit is jeans, a white tee, my delicate Catbird silver thorn necklace and a pair of Superga tennis shoes, color optional. I try to be careful but I get home and then "where did that stain come from?" So when I find a nice white tee for a low price that fits well, I buy multiples. Right now I am wearing t-shirts that I bought for $2 each from Meijers, a combo grocery/everything store in Michigan. I bought them right after Christmas last year. I bought 7 of them, 6 white and one black. They were 100% cotton with 3/4 length sleeves. Perfect for all the air conditioning I am usually in. I usually have to buy petite clothing for length but most of the tops I buy are in regular (non petite). If I find tees that are well made and the sleeve length is right, I will try to wait until they go on clearance and then swoop in and buy the lot! Of course sometimes the fabric is too heavy to wear in the summer so I will save for the cooler months. I have done this at Target, K-Mart and Walmart too. I can usually bleach them but eventually they start to look worn. So it's nice to have backups. And when they are beyond repair, they make great cleaning rags!

Some modal Tahari T's from TJMaxx, in a few different colors, that similar to Gaylene's post, just seem to have the right neckline, sleeve length, ease of fit--neither too tailored or too fluid. I can't make myself give them away because at times they are just the perfect thing. I tend to keep them more for layering under blazers but it's okay if I need to remove the jacket.
A navy thick cotton knit top, ottoman knit, boatneck, slightly boxy, from Gap that looks better than a T but goes well over pencil skirts for a neutral summer look. I keep thinking it ought to have faded from love by now but I've not found anything that works as reliably.
Some belts from TJMaxx.

Some black suede slightly pointy toe low-heeled pumps that may finally die in the next year if the lining deteriorates--can't remember brand, a common one, not Naturalizer but similar, bought at discount store maybe 15 years ago or more--still look classic and "elevate" skirts and pants to look a bit more dressy, but are comfortable enough for some days at work.

Reliable--I think that's a key term for me. Something that even if I'm doing a review and making myself think about whether it's dated or not useful, but then I put it on and it works every time.

My Old Navy denim shorts. I got them for around $15 at the beginning of the summer of 2014 and wear them multiple times per week. As I put them on this morning I was thinking that the only way I am ever giving these up is when they are "pried from my cold dead hands."

Fun thread! My fave low end would be my faux birks from Target. I have about wore them into the ground and I want to replace with real ones soon. I also love Gap tees and Levis
