I had shoulder length hair for a long time, and would blow dry it with a round brush after washing it. I washed it every other day, and would wear it in a ponytail when it wasn't freshly washed.

At one point I was setting it in foam rollers at night about once a week and then brushing it out into waves, using dry shampoo when it got oily before a wash. that was a ton of work!

Then I cut it off and it got super easy to "do". I still blow dried it with my fingers to get it going the right direction, but just rubbed a little pomade through it and done.

Recently, I've been growing it longer and got it permed, so it's super curly. I "do" it by dousing it with water, scrunching in curl creme, because I shower in the evening (still only wash it every other night) and the curls get really fluffy when I sleep on them.

Right now, I'm using very little product, just a deep purple hair dressing to keep my white hair from getting brassy. I straighten it almost every morning. Once my extensions go back in, I'll have to start using heat protection spray to straighten or texturing salt spray if I don't straighten

I have no patience for doing my hair. I have learned (over and over) that there is a certain length that is my sweet spot. For me it's right at or above my shoulders. At this length I can wash and fix my hair and then just do a "refresh for one to three more days". The refresh usually means a little spray with some water (if I'm wearing it naturally wavy) or a couple curls with a curling iron and a fluff to my roots. A lot of time I wear an up-do the last day (let's me honest, sometimes it's two days). Every couple years I decide I want to grow my hair longer and then once it gets there I remember why I don't like it. Once my hair is a certain length it doesn't hold it's style and I really need to "do" it every day. That usually ends up with up-do more than I would wish. I'm in such a spot now and I have a hair appointment tomorrow. I can't wait to get some length cut off.

I probably shouldn’t reply to this post as I don’t “do” my hair very often. I don’t need polish from my hair but I do like it to look good.

My hair is a little long, fine textured with medium thickness. I have it partially highlighted and have a few long layers. Salon visits are about every 12 weeks but I will sometimes go longer. The highlighting gives my hair some more body.

I wash my hair every other day but my hair tends to be a bit oily and looks even more so when my roots start to grown in between salon visits so I use a dry shampoo. I dislike almost all dry shampoos - the scent puts me off and/or I feel the residue. The one I’m loyal to is John Frieda Volume Refresh. It won’t work on super dirty hair but for day 2 it’s just fine. Doesn’t leave noticeable residue and the smell is fresh and not cloying.

I use the same Revlon brush as Gretchen. I love it. Best case scenario is I wash hair and put in Alterna CC cream (I’ll also use Living Proof and Kerastase but like the CC cream best). Let it air dry for 30-45 minutes while I have coffee/breakfast, bathroom/dressing routine and then hit it with the Revlon brush for 5 minutes max. If some parts of my hair have dried completely I’ll mist with a bit of water.

If I have more time (hanging out in the morning on the weekend) I’ll let my hair air dry completely and put in 2-inch (I think) Velcro rollers for about 20 minutes (more if there’s time). I like this method as it avoids heat damage but is too time consuming for the work week.

This is why a good cut matters to me.
I was once with my little boy as he was getting his hair cut. I commented to the woman cutting it that I spent half an hour combing it out every morning, and that’s much more time than I’d spend on my own hair. She looked at me over the top of her glasses disapprovingly and said “I know”. Lol!

When it’s long, I can braid it in about ten minutes, and I have a bunch of accessories I can clip in quickly, but I generally like the deceit that “I just woke up looking like this”, so don’t want fancy hairdos.

I’m bad at hair. I’m bad at polish. And I’m very afraid of heat styling, because my hair has become very fine and I already subject it to vivid colour. That said, it’s long and I don’t like long straggly hair hanging there... and conversely (perversely?) it’s long so I can put it up. So I’m all about the RATE Hipster double bun... bun rollers are very helpful. They come in different shapes.

I DO want to improve my curling iron skills... I’ve been trying to search my stash for my heat-styling prep serum...

... I used to know lots of girls/women who got up two hours early to do their hair and makeup... I will never be able to summon that kind of energy...

Thank you for all your replies! Very informative. (Kari, love your modern retro rainbow hair!).

I have thought about chopping my hair of many times, but I am afraid a short 'do will demand more effort than leaving it long (I don't like going to the hairdressers...).

I am after something low maintenance, that still looks deliberate and pretty. I did henna my own hair this fall, to restore some of my strawberry blonde redness, but I ended up very dark burgundy (and to my horror: with gray roots!).

Will check out some youtube tutorials on overnight styling, that may be the answer... Wake up and brush my hair, pin it strategically and look FAB!

My hair is a lot like yours. Fine, dense, runs oily, straight-ish but with some cowlicks and irregular waves. And after many years of short hair it’s now shoulder length, which is quite long for me.

I play up how I do it including:
• Blow-dry straight
• Wet set in pin curls overnight - YouTube tutorials help. This isn’t a big production. I use some setting spray on damp hair to help hold and brush out (and brush and brush and brush), using a tiny bit of pomade to combat frizz
• Apply curl-enhancing mousse and conditioner, finger scrunch, and air dry
• Pin up into a French twist with Bobby pins (my preference when I run or hike.)

What I do kind of depends on weather and also if I’ll be running (and thus washing hair.)

I dye my hair but use direct dyes - I last had developer used at the salon in early April. To make the dye last, enhance my natural wave, and prevent greasiness, I’ve slowly moved to wash my hair less often. I now co-wash a couple times per week after running (scrub scalp in water, wash hair and rinse with a light, silicone-free conditioner and then use a heavier silicone-free conditioner on ends) most often, and actually shampoo only 2-3 times a month. This has really helped.

For illustration, a collection of selfies on my phone showing when my hair turned out differently and I liked it - including my first attempt at French braiding, which I don’t know how to do, really.

Sometimes my hair doesn’t turn out as intended, and I default back to a French twist or a hair clip. I try to go with whatever works. I’m clumsy and messy and learning as I go.

I’m in my mid-30’s and feel like I’m only now starting to learn how to do things with hair other than get it cut short and SUPER layered, or blow dry it straight daily. My hair is cut in a very asymmetrical long bob.

Synne, I have wavy hair that if I let it dry naturally, tends to be a bit hap hazard, fluffy and definitely not fab. I wash my hair every 2nd day and style it. That involves a quick blow dry and use of my ceramic hair irons. I work with my natural waves and put some more deliberate curl into my hair. I use deep conditioning treatments most washes (a hair bonder on my hair pre-wash once a week) and a conditioning hair mask as the conditioner (also once a week). This plus my shorter hair cut (which sits above my shoulders) keeps it in good condition. I also use a heat protectant before my blow dry and also before using the hair irons. I generally am fine not to style my hair the following day, so it is just a quick brush and away I go.

Styling my hair takes about 15 mins. I spend about 10 mins on my make-up too. I generally find my morning routine therapeutic, a time for some personal reflection and space, so I quite like that my routine takes a bit of time.

I do remember when my son was a baby and toddler and I was lucky to grab a 5 minute shower. I have not always had the luxury of spending so much time on grooming but I definitely feel more put together when I do have the luxury of being able to style my hair and put on my make-up.

I have shoulder length hair. It’s finely textured, but thick. I get it treated every 8-10 weeks (highlights or color depending on my mood).

I am decidedly *not* a morning person, so I do whatever I can to minimize the amount of time needed to get ready.

My preferred schedule looks something like this:
Day 1 - full wash. Let air dry for 15 minutes then dry/style with the Revlon brush. This. Product. Is. Amazing. I highly recommend to decrease drying time and increase style! Light hairspray if needed, but I often skip.

https://www.amazon.com/Revlon-.....B01LSUQSB0

Day 2 - comb lightly, and touch up with flat iron. Light hairspray.

Day 3 - dry shampoo (ideally do this an hour before styling), then hot rollers. Backcomb and spray as needed.

Day 4 - (assuming this is a travel or work at home day). Dry shampoo, then put up in a pony-tail, or bun.

Alternatively, Day 3 can be a rewash, especially if I’m going to be in front it customers.

And...the revlon brush also works well for days when I’m _really_ running late. Just segment off the crown and front of the hair and make sure they are really dry/styled. Let the rest dry naturally.

Hope this helps!

I am useless to you because my hair is short. But FWIW, I wash every two or three days but rinse most mornings and often add product. Air dry. That's it. When it is a bit longer, I typically will flat iron the fringe. I rarely ever blow dry -- only if it is super cold and I haven't done my hair in time before leaving house.

I condition and add product to my hair every day and then let it do its own thing. I wish I could get it to dry a bit faster in the winter, but everything I try dries it out.

My hair sounds similar to yours (although I may have more hair but it is fine). I get highlights mainly to add texture, but a little brightness doesn’t hurt either. I also have layers which enhances the waviness of my hair in the back. I have fringe and shorter hair around the face where it is straighter. After I wash my hair daily, I apply Moroccan oil and spray with sea salt spray. I just blow dry the top/front. I also use a styling balm/butter and scrunch to enhance the waves and add body. I can’t stand not washing my hair daily so I had to come up with a very quick (under 5 minute) method.

I don't have long hair, but I "do" my hair every day. One thing I have learned above all else: Don't fight nature. I've found a hairstyle that works well for my hair type (fine and mostly straight) and my climate (dry and windy). Get a hairstylist that will be honest with you about a cut suited to your hair type, the amount of time the style will take, and how it will work/not work with whatever your climate is.

Thank you for asking these questions!!! I want to know the answers too. I spend less than 30 sec on my hair each day. I put it in a ponytail to work out or swim, then wrap the ponytail into a bun and let the salt and sweat create big beachy waves. It’s usually awesome! But sometimes super frazzled and disheveled. I would like to throw in a more polished look sometimes but a) I don’t have (make) time for it because b) I don’t know how to do quick updos and c) I live in a super humid climate. I admire you all with “done” hair so much!

I had a pixie last year, and have grown it out to an asymmetrical cut. I have wavy hair so I have to style it either straight or wavy, and a few years ago I put brushes away and embraced the waves. I actually prefer what more voluminous hair does for my face and proportions over straight hair.

I shower daily. My hair is too fine for Deva/curly girl cleansing methods, and I have a bit of dermatitis and sensitive skin, so I need the scrubbing action of a fragrance free shampoo for healthy scalp. I tried dry shampoos, no-poo, conditioner-washing, going longer between shampoos... (big inhale) and it just doesn't work for me.

In the shower, I finger comb or use a wide toothed comb while the conditioner is in. This is the only tool that touches my hair now.

When I'm out of the shower, I wrap hair in a towel and do skincare and makeup. Then I distribute a fingernail size bit of Neuma Organics curl cream on the ends, and diffuse dry upside down and right side up for about 7 minutes. Then I'm on my way! The trick for me is to be ok with slightly damp hair - if it is dried too much it gets frizzy and loses some wave. By the time I get to work it's dry. All told, hair alone takes 7-10 minutes. I started styling every day when I realized I never regretted styling my hair, so I made sure I had time to do it. On days I didn't style, I felt off all day, so it's my priority now.

I am very low maintenance with my hairstyle. By nature it is wavy and tends to frizz, and it is getting thinner and finer with age — it used to be quite thick. The silver lining is that it takes less time to dry it and it is more manageable now than when I was young. I think that the process of coloring also makes it a little more manageable.

I wash every day if I work out enough to sweat, or I can stretch a washing into a third day if I’m not active. Most days I simply apply a little Kiehls creme with silk groom, blow dry it to straighten it a bit, spray a little finishing spray, and that’s it. Other days I’ll blow dry it partially (mainly so the bangs and crown behave) and let to go wavy. It takes no time at all to do that, not even five minutes. Maybe 10-15 to do the full blow dry, especially if I get out the styling brush to do a little extra straightening.

I’ve never been big on styling my hair in a variety of ways — I am not one of those people who looks cute in a variety of updos and such, and I don’t have the interest or patience to do those anyway. Mid-length, layered hair works for me!

I also wonder like Smittie if your hair looks good straight. If your hair is very straight it might be hard to change the style. I am speaking from experience.
I usually have straight hair but sometimes my hair surprises me and decides to be a bit wavy. This usually happens when it is humid. I realized after many years that I have no say in what my hair does. None. And I have tried everything. Products, blow dryers, curling irons, flat irons.... Now I let my hair have its own way.
My hair is fine, medium thickness (it used to be thicker but not anymore), not coloured, just below my shoulders and has long layers. I wash it every three days. I try different shampoos and conditioners. I am not loyal to any these days. After washing my hair I put a mousse on and then style it. I blow dry my bangs and sometimes straighten them. That is it. The rest of my hair air dries. If I blow dry it then it looks exactly the same so really what is the point.
The one thing that really helped was getting long layers but my hair is medium thickness. That gave my hair some oomph.

Ditto, a shorter look looks best on me and accommodates my wanting to do it with minimal effort every day. This means going with my natural texture. In winter it's a dollop of molding paste after the shower and a 3-minute diffuser blowdry; in the summer it's salt spray and air dry. It's all I have the patience for and perhaps not coincidentally when I go with my natural texture my hair looks good all day; when I try to do something different my hair slowly reverts back to its natural state, thus thwarting any efforts to look different...

i have medium length stick straight very thick hair. i also have no skill with curling or flat irons and am terrified that i would burn myself. so my routine is pretty basic. wash and condition about 3 times a week. then simple blow dry with a leave in conditioner. i get my hair about 90% dry and consider it done. maybe on my off i'll try to touch up my bangs with a round brush and cool blast from the hair dryer. on days i wash my hair, its approx 1/2 hour, other days its approx 2 minutes.

If you have medium length straight hair and want to style it to have some waves, then yes, I think this would take a long time in the morning! But I bet your straight hair looks pretty good without styling!

I have wavy hair, and every morning I cry a little tear because it looks so hideous. Like a bunch of snakes and rats attacked my head. To get it to look less hideous, I have to wet it completely every morning and put lots of leave-in conditioner in it to keep the frizz at bay.
Then I go to work wth wet hair and let it dry over the course of a few hours. Blow drying takes too long most days. It usu. takes about 15 mins. To blow dry if I do have time.

My hair isn't very long, just below shoulders, a little wavy, and quite thin. I'm using a heat protectant and gel by Shea Moisture usually. Blow dry then heated flat brush. 10 minutes ish. Not perfect but a bit more intentional. Once a week I use coconut oil to deep condition, and wash every 2 days.
I do clip my hair up when it's really hot and humid, but nothing elaborate like I did when my hair was long.
