My DD is at the stage where she wants to wear nicer clothes, and that's right up my ally. I don't do casual that well.

I have always loved dressing DD. As a toddler and preschooler, I put her in patterned dresses with coordinating patterned leggings (the dress would have dots, say, while the leggings were striped in the same colour pattern). Now, when I am out shopping, I see things and think how cute they would look on her. She definitely has her own style, which is quite different from my own, but she always looks great. I've found that telling her what I learned here is most effective when something isn't working. I say, "You know, I just don't think that top 'gets' you. It isn't fab enough for you." She will usually consider it in the mirror and agree. Dressing a pre-teen is fun, and I am guessing that dressing a teenager will be just as much fun. I remember my mum telling me that I was so much fun to shop for because everything looked good on me, and now I know exactly how she felt. Everything looks awesome on DD just by virtue of her being young and cute. It is VERY difficult for me not to overspend on her!

The shopping gene has totally skipped my kids' generation in the family! DD16 and DD14 are not at all interested in shopping, as witnessed by this dialogue the other day:
ME: "What are you doing home? I thought you were going out with your friends today?"
DD14: "Nah, they were going to the "
ME: "But don't you like hanging out with your friends?"
DD14: "I don't like shopping so I told them I'd rather stay home and read a book."
Right.

Basically, shopping with my daughters is like shopping with a man: brief, targetted and immediate decisions. Mostly it's me nagging them to buy some clothes when the empirical evidence (such as holes in their shoes) would indicate it's time to go shopping. Except for bikinis... which they can never get enough of and pay ridiculous prices for the tiniest triangles of fabric. "Browsing" is not a concept they understand. All the other mothers tell me I should be very grateful...

And yes... Vegan...both have gone vegan a year ago so our household is pretty much vegan these days. It's funny, since I just got pulled along into it, I'm not sure what the benefits were supposed to be or if I feel any worse or better. It just is.

Shevia, isn't it funny how twins can be so different sometimes? (I have a good friend with twin 12-year-old boys, and same situation. They are polar opposites. One is bookish, quiet, and musically inclined, the other, wildly extraverted and athletic). Mind you, it might be fun shopping for girls with totally different tastes -- you get to experience all kinds of fashion. :-)

Anne, I can't believe that at 5'3", your daughter is finding dresses to be too short! That shows that there's something wrong with dress designs these days. (I know Angie complains about too-short hems). I mean, what are the tall girls wearing if a petite one can't get a long-enough dress??

lyn67, glad to hear you love shopping with your daughter, even now that she's 19! I hope we are still having fun with it when my girl's that age. :-)

Bijou, what a sweet little dog! She looks like she belongs on a postcard. :-)

RobinF, it's true that girls seems to wear leggings as much (or more) than jeans these days. It was one of Angie's blog topics not so long ago, if I remember correctly. My own daughter wears leggings and a tunic about 50% of the time.

BC, good luck with the vegan diet. :-)

TraceyLiz, I'm sorry to hear that your daughter had you in tears. Teenagers can be bratty sometimes. I'm crossing my fingers that we won't go through that stage with our kids, or if we do, that I can "win" by being unreasonably reasonable, lol. ;-)

Barbara Diane, I think one could have fun shopping for boys too! Both my partner and his brother quite like clothes, and their mum (and stylish dad) still enjoy shopping for them -- and they're both in their 40s. Great story about the "no bumpies", by the way. :-)

rachylou, that thought had crossed my mind too -- how shopping for teens could be dangerous to the wallet. When she's older, I'm going to make her get a part-time job, just so she sees how minimal minimum wage really is. ;-)

So funny about the TV! I was in a department store with my oldest DD when she was about that age. There was a TV with a music video playing. She started dancing right there in front of God and everybody. Little kids can be so cute.

Oh, shopping with your teen is dangerous to the wallet - way too much fun Teens care and pay attention and are so judgy; lots of good discussion there. Lol.

But your story about not being into it when your dd was little... so my mom who is not at all clothes horse, but who is into aesthetics, and is - I won't say conservative, let's call it 'strict'... anyways, this Missouri Synod mom of mine has a bizarre new age streak. She got herself a guru once called (of course) Ms 'Avalon'.., and Ms Avalon tasked her with getting a Barbie and dressing Barbie up. Get mum to try and balance out, get in touch with her inner frou. My mum told her that's what she had me for, lololol! :)

I think mum has more impact on her gurus than the other way round.

About 15 years ago I shopped with a dear friend and her then about 13 year old daughter. It was so much fun. First time I felt I missed out by having boys.

I didn't dress them or me up back then. Their cutest outfits were color blocked sweat pants with matching sweatshirts. And one store had cute turtlenecks with trucks, etc. that I bought when they went on sale. Since they outgrew everything so fast, I didn't spend much.

My most memorable shopping trip was with my youngest son and my mother. My boys were almost exactly 3 years apart, but the youngest did not like the sweatpants my older son lived in. We went shopping in the middle of a weekday and no one else was in the department. The store had a tv. My son was still in diapers but did not want to wear anything that wasn't as flat and as tight fitting as bicycle shorts. He stood there in the middle of the department watching the tv and we put him in and out of shorts. He'd look down, say "No Bumpies!" and we'd peel them off and try another pair on. He was 90th or higher in height and weight and we had to put him in much smaller sizes.
I never would have changed my kid in the middle of the store - it was my mother's idea, but no one else was there, and the tv kept him distracted long enough for us to figure out his size.

The journey of shopping with my DD25 was like a roller coaster ride with lots of twists and turns. At 8 it was fantastic,by 13 anything I liked she snubbed her nose at...so challenging I'd end up in tears at her nastiness. It was the only time that side of her came out , but it lasted for years... So glad she is 25 and now agreeable again, lol. This year for Xmas she wants "statement sweaters" and I'm having fun surprising her again. She is trusting me and I am over the moon. I of course have picked her brain to see what her style is first, but did great last year , so my confidence is building. Still can't get her out of heeled boots and into some flats...

I hear you about the 0's. My older DD wore size 0 for years, until she got heavy into exercise and radically changed her diet. Now she's at a very healthy weight and is actually training to compete in the USA Triathlon. She will also be going through the diving certification course when we go to Cancun this November. Anyhoo, her body looks a lot better. I agree with you, though--no pity for someone that small, except for trying to find clothes. I may not be at my ideal weight, but at least I have no problems finding things that fit me. Even at my ideal weight, I would be a size 6. I'm a size 8 now, so I just have a little weight to lose. Hopefully I can stay disciplined enough during the upcoming holidays to keep eating right. I'm on a vegan diet to see if my overall health will improve. I'm hoping to lower my CRP levels, which were high earlier this year when the neurologist ordered blood work.

I was never one to dress dolls as a child but I enjoyed picking out clothes for my daughter (now 23). I did avoid pink though. We have always enjoyed shopping together, although whenever she is with me I end up buying for her and not me! Funny, she lives out of state now, I was just talking to her last night and she was out shopping for jeans. She hasn't worn jeans in many years! But her current job, although very casual, won't allow leggings any more. We were laughing about the time she was about 13 and we were shopping at American Eagle and had to ask if they had any 0's in stock. It was a very novel experience for me, I have never been a 0 in my life and she was moaning about the fact that she is now looking at 6's. I don't feel too sorry for her :)

The best shopping experience I had was buying a new collar for my fur baby. I was worried because she is small that the collar may be too big for her and so the owner said to bring her in to try the sizes on. Bijou had a wonderful time being the centre of attention in the store and we got a beautiful African hand beaded collar. So she is a Scottish dog (being a West Highland White Terrier), with a French name, an African tribal collar, living in Australia!
@Ave Maria, I love those Boden dresses, and would probably want to wear a rainbow dress everyday too.

Oh the indecisiveness. That was not an issue with any of my 4 girls. I think that would drive me batty. All of mine learned the importance of trying things on, though. It's the only way to tell if something's going to fit properly and look like you think it will. The big issue we had was that each girl has a different body type and tastes in clothing. The one that had the worst time finding things to fit is a pear shape; though now that my youngest DD is out of children's clothing and yet can't fit into most teen clothing, the struggle to find well-fitting clothing continues.

It is great that you are enjoying this.

But it won't surprise you that I don't really enjoy shopping with my DD13, because I don't really enjoy shopping anyway!!

But all you normal YLF people probably would.

DD loves shopping and often asks if we can look around the shops on our mother/daughter dates. I do if I can manage it, but I'd much rather walk or ride together, or go and have a snack out together (the latter of which we'd do as well as the shop). I find shopping on weekend afternoons really tiring. She took the bus into town last week and we braved a very wet and windy day to shop in my lunchbreak.

She enjoys browsing, and has just started looking online too.

And yes, stuff looks good on her - the occasional item of mine that I just couldn't get to work on me does on her.

One fit issue she has is the same as many of us are having at the moment - dresses that are too short. She is 5"3 and while not delicate, is slimmer than me. Her graduation dress (for last December) which had a fitted bodice and gathered skirt looks ridiculous on her now. I'm wanting her to try one of my dresses for a wedding tomorrow (she wanted to wear jeans!)

DD has lots of handed down items in good condition, has clothing gifts (some she doesn't wear much or sometimes, like) and wears school uniform.

I buy things I consider important, but she spends her own as well - birthday gifts and sometimes pocket money.

BC, what about stores for teens or tweens? At 5'0", your daughter will fit teen sizes. We have one at our local mall -- it's a Canadian one, but there must be an American equivalent -- that specializes in exactly what you're looking for: stylish sweatshirts, tees, jeans and yoga pants for young girls. It's a bit like LuLuLemon for kids, only they also do some jeans.

(For the record, I've never been what you would call skinny either. I've got an athletic-looking body. I'm probably about 105 lbs now, but at your daughter's age, and for the longest time after that -- until I had kids! -- I was 98 lbs. And I used to occasionally buy kids' sizes, especially for things on the bottom half).

BC, do you have an H&M or Forever 21? In my experience Kohl's runs really big, as do a lot of American department stores.

I think you might be right, Aziraphale! On top of Orlando being full of older folks, it's a warmer climate, and my DD is looking mostly for sweatshirts. You wouldn't think they'd be hard to come by, but they are, and I don't know that a tailor would help for knitwear like that. Ugh! Last time we were in Orlando, though, we managed to get some Gap outlet sweatshirts for the girls. They're still wearing them, and it's been about 5 years now I'd say.

Staysfit, that's a beautiful picture your daughter painted! I let my kids pick a lot of their clothes too. Or, I would suggest things, and then let them say yes or no. My daughter was always more opinionated than my son, and spent most of kindergarten wearing a pink tulle ballet skirt. The boy seems happy as long as he's comfortable! Although this year he did ask for a few more pairs of jeans, rather than just sweatpants.

Suz, it's tough for any of us who prefer a style aesthetic that doesn't "go" with our body type! Good thing your daughter has such a style savvy mum. And Ellen Degeneres is a great role model too. :-)

Sammy, I have to admit that it's fun watching my daughter try on clothes without having to deal with lumps and bumps! She's 12 and very short, so finding small enough sizes is tricky, but she's also got that lean, taut shape that many young girls have -- with a flat abdomen and no bust to speak of yet -- which means that everything hangs beautifully on her body.

bj1111 -- yes, teens definitely have their moments! My kid isn't quite 13, so I've no doubt we have all that to come. She's certainly capable of being sassy these days. :-)

BC, I'm almost exactly the same size as your youngest DD, so I feel her pain! I've solved the problem by becoming a very good client at the local tailor. It helps that I live in Vancouver, which has a huge Asian population, and many Asian women are tinier even than I am -- so buyers stock a lot of smaller sizes. I can't imagine Orlando would be a great place to find small sizes. It's full of older, white Americans. :-)

I know what it's like to shop with teen girls. I have 4 DDs--all grown and out of the house except for my 18-year-old, who is having major difficulty finding tops that fit. She's only 5' tall and 100 lbs., so it's a challenge. The others are all 5'4" tall now, so there wasn't the petite issue to worry about, but they were so picky about what they wore that they didn't want me to tag along. My youngest, however, is a joy to shop with and takes my advice when I tell her that something doesn't fit correctly.

Anyhoo, she went to Old Navy and Gap yesterday, and found nothing. She said everything was too loose. I think we're going to hit Kohl's this weekend to see if we can find anything. She doesn't have a bad figure--just your average neat hourglass. It's just finding clothing that's small enough. We're going to Orlando in December. Does anybody know if there are outlet stores there that carry small sizes for this age group?

So happy for your and your daughter -- what a fun way to bond!

Shopping with my DD (16) is tricky; she doesn't like most of what's out there, prefers to dress in boyish clothing but does not have a boyish shape, and is hard to fit. But we do our best and I try to support her style choices. Tonight she's going to wear a fun knit blazer to the school awards ceremony. She wants to look like Ellen DeGeneres, which is a little bit difficult when you are a stocky Asian teen, but hey. There are worse style role models.

I had to look twice at your title and then I clicked with apprehension. I wasn't sure if you were serious or sarcastic. I'm glad you were serious! How wonderful for you! I its always been easy and fun to shop for both of my kids. My DS in particular. He makes choices quickly because he knows what he likes. There is a limited supply of options because he is tall 6'3" and skinny (130 lbs). It's also the best time to have conversations with him. For some reason a shopping trip and lunch get him talking. He was sad when he outgrew Hanna A.

My DD is like many artists. She has an exquisite sense of color, proportion and of course style. She has always been fun to shop with. When she was little, her favorite color was burgundy. I knew very early she had artistic talent and a sense for color! What little kid says they love burgundy? (We're a non-drinking family so she wasn't referring to alcohol.). She has an entire series of paintings based on her wardrobe. Or, maybe it's the other way around? One of her classmates noted that she often dressed like whatever project she was working on while she was doing her study abroad semester. At the time she was painting pictures of leaves. Lots of them. I was lucky enough to get a few of her cast off paintings. I framed this one. I probably have a pic her wearing a corresponding outfit, but don't have permission to share it. My DD was never a pretty pink lover.

The one thing I have never done is pick my kids clothes. As soon as they could, I let them choose their own. It made for some interesting wardrobe combinations, but they were always happy. I'm not sure what the school thought about my son wearing what might have looked like the same blue shirt every day of the week, but he had six of them, plus one orange for good measure. That was a trying year. Everything was clean, but I bet the school had their doubts!

Marlene, what a great idea! I've never tried bringing my daughter along when I'm shopping for my own clothes. (I'm a solitary shopper, usually). But after what you said, maybe I'll start doing that. :-)

UmmLila and AviaMariah, I love Hanna Andersson and Mini Boden! I haven't bought anything from Mini Boden in years, though, because the shipping is super expensive. I used to buy the occasional thing from them when we lived in the states. Love their printed catalogue. But Hanna Andersson shipping isn't too bad, so I still buy from there. You can't beat their soft cotton stripy pyjamas. Their girl clothing isn't really my taste -- and my daughter won't wear it anymore in any case, because it's too "little girly" for her now -- but i can understand why others like it. Their boys' section, however, is fabulous. That's mostly what my son wears. They have the best, softest, most durable cotton graphic tees and hoodies. (Mind you, my girl still likes their clogs -- that's where she got her little suede clog boots).

smittie, I hear you on the overabundance of pink for little girls. It's pretty much that, or various shades of purple. Not that there's anything wrong with those colours, but a bit of variety would have been nice. Just so you know: Hunters for kids are quite a lot cheaper than the adult sizes. They're still a bit pricey for kids' footwear, but if you've got a slow-growing kid, it might be worth it. :-)

JAileen, oh no! Those are lots of good reasons why shopping with your boy wouldn't be so fun. Oh well, lots of boys aren't into shopping anyway. I'm sure you have other fun things to do together!

Angie, maybe it'll happen one day! If you're ever in Vancouver, let me know. ;-)

Aziraphale, there were several reasons we had no fun: he hated shopping, he hated being out in public with me, and he hated my taste. I guess that's it.

My DD is 11.
Like you, I had no fun shopping for her baby clothes and she ended up wearing cotton onesies with those cute leather shoes (I forget what they were called but I'll admit I did have fun purchasing them!)

I think I would have liked to dress her up more if there had been a better selection of girl clothes. Like maybe something a little less pink. I too liked the boys' clothes, and wished they had them without trucks and airplanes all over them so I could give them to my daughter.

At this point I am just starting to shop for teen clothes. DD is still so tiny and skinny that true teen clothes are still too big but we have done really well at old navy. She is wearing high-low hems and the long-over-lean looks really well. She really likes simple Tom's shoes and very plain colours. Hadn't considered Hunters for her! Those sound incredibly cool AZ!

My DD's BFF is much more easy breezy about fashion. She wears maxi dresses and faux leather jackets. Another BF (not BF*F* ;-)) has a half shaved head. DD says she is happy with her current "comfortable" look and likes her long hair and "blend in" types of clothes.

Like mother like daughter!

I am having too much fun shopping for my almost 4 year old DD. Mini Boden - be still my heart. Also Hannah Anderson and NEXTdirect among others. I'm not having quite as much fun shopping for my almost 2 yr old DD. She's at the tail end of the "baby" clothes. So I must enjoy the toddler styles more. Just for fun I'll include a few of my recent Mini Boden obsessions. (She has the rainbow dress which she wants to wear everyday.)
