It's good to appreciate your teachers. My mum used to have our teachers to dinner. I don't think people do that anymore.

Speaking of real world socialising... don't forget to give a shout out to your teachers on Facebook (!!)

This was so nice of you Mochi. Have you ever seen the movie 'Pay It Forward'? This gesture reminds me of it. Small things are very important, we just do not realize it.

Such a thoughtful gesture and I am glad it went over well. In my observation, at some moment in time, anyone could be in need of a reminder of what it is all about or some encouragement to carry on. You provided both. Bravo!

It does feel great to create a moment for someone, doesn't it?

What a wonderful thing you and your classmates did. I love dance and its a shame that so many studios are struggling. I think it's awesome that you take tango lessons. I am mainly a line dancer and two stepper but have recently started taking an occasional ballroom lesson and I am really enjoying it.

Nancy, one of the things that makes me so happy about this story is remembering when you were a new tango-er, feeling shy about things and wondering whether you were ever going to fit in. And because you were brave enough to keep at it even though it was hard, it's not only been great for you, but it's allowed you to be a blessing for others!!

*very big happy sigh*

Thank you, everyone. No, neither of them cried but they were really really happy, as you would imagine. The woman was overtly thrilled and gave me a big kiss (I presented it pointedly as being from the group, but she said later, "You were behind this, weren't you?" LOL. She is too smart.). They guy was, you know, a not-quite-as-expressive guy and gave me a hug, but she said he was going to be really happy about this. And after the class a smaller subset of our already small group stayed on and hung out in the gallery where we have our class and took turns dancing and talking. I had a really nice conversation with the guy teacher, who is shy and we haven't talked outside class up till now, so it seemed like some ice was broken too. It's true, we need to express appreciation to people who make a difference to us, and I think the message went thru.

And then hubby and I previewed the restaurant for them, heh. It is a really cool place and I think they are going to love it.

Feeling very happy that I became part of this community in a relatively short time, and now have some cool, open, interesting friends and an activity I am madly passionate about.

Thanks for all your kind words, everyone. They apply to all of you here.

Janet, your story is so true. Anything and everything can carry such rich associations, and at least for me, my emotions are now very clear and surface-level--meaning wow, they're powerful!

Your heart is in the right place and that's what counts, it is a super nice thing to do and I would be estatic to be the recipient of such heartwarming token.

You are right, It is hard to judge what is appropiate these days, in the "real world", especially when we account for all of the cultural differences. Heck, we almost did a huge snafu at work, by throwing a surprise baby shower to a coworker, who considers them as a bad omen to her newborn child. Thank the lord her friend spoke up. Sheet happens.

Here it is much easier, because we have our own YLF culture, so yep, there is less room for error.

I am sure the gesture will be well received. If not, which I highly doubt, you have that learning experience for next time.

No worries, you are an amazing person for doing this.

In my experience, deserving people recognize a kind gesture and appreciate the spirit in which it is given, so I would not hesitate to do this nice thing. Teachers (of all kinds) can always use more appreciation, IMHO.

As for whether the recipient cries, well, I tend to tear up easily (much to my perpetual embarrassment), but I would take it as a good sign if it happens. My husband and I took my sister to an Orioles game a few weeks ago (she lives in another state and rarely gets to go to a game, much less in the great seats he purchased). My sister, like me, has fond memories of our dad and his love of the game, so it's a big deal to us. When my husband caught a foul ball, he looked at it in his hands, looked over at my sister, and handed it to her. She started tearing up! So, unexpected gestures, no matter what size, can touch us in unexpected ways.

Not that that really makes sense, but I'm referring to this community and how we rally when someone here has had some trouble. It's so heartfelt and yet also seems like an obvious response, and it's one of the best things I love about this place.

Our tango "school" if you call it that is really small and I have become friendly with the teacher, very close, in fact. I found out that her fellow teaching partner is feeling bitter and distraught about the low turnout in their efforts to start up new and ongoing classes and throw monthly dances in their studio, and how he is wanting to withdraw from teaching, or greatly reduce his commitment to stay more with his other focus as an artist.

This was unexpected and also saddened me so much that I went and discussed this via email with the other classmates and I spearheaded a money collection. We'll be presenting them with some gift certificates to a really nice local Japanese restaurant. More importantly, they will both see how important their dedication is to those of us in their class, and how special their school is to us.

I think they will be really touched by this. I am also worried (maybe just paranoid?) that this will seem like a weird gesture? You know, like sometimes when people aren't used to certain things, even good things, it may startle them? Who knows, I will go ahead with it anyway....they will feel the love this afternoon after our class.

I guess it's kind of sad that I would even be second-guessing a kind gesture, but maybe that's also me just constantly wondering about my social appropriateness.

Anyway, I owe it to YLF for providing such an eminent example of kindness, concern, nurturing, etc etc. All the time.

Really awesome people you all are. I will report back. I hope my teachers don't cry. I suspect the woman will....that would be a good thing, right?
